  • The characteristics of heat transfer and pressure drop for fully developed turbulent flow in a tube with circumferential fins and circular were experimentally studied. The various spacing and sizes of circumferential fins and circular disks were selected as design parameters, while the effects of these parameters on heat transfer enhancement and pressure drop were investigated. In order to quantify the effect of heat transfer enhancement and the increase of pressure drop due to the fins and disks in a tube, the Nusselt numbers and the friction factors for various configurations and operating conditions were compared to those for a corresponding smooth tube. The results showed that the heat transfer rate was significantly enhanced by increasing the height of circumferential fins and decreasing the pitch of circumferential fins. On the other hand, the influence of the disk size and the fin-disk spacing were not significant. Based on the experimental results, a correlation for estimating the Nusselt number was suggested.

  • The evaporation heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics for HFC-l34a in flat plate type heat exchangers with enhanced beads were experimentally investigated. Three plate type evaporators with different geometric condition of U-turn area were tested. Mass fluxes were tested over the range of 83kg/$m^2$s to 166kg/$m^2$s, and heat fluxes were varied from 4㎾/$m^2$ to 12㎾/$m^2$. Evaporation temperature was 5$^{\circ}C$ with inlet qualities of 0.1 to 1.0. There was no notable difference in the heat transfer coefficient by geometric variation of U-turn area, but the third plate with cross-ribbed channel at U-turn area was better than others in the evaluation using volume goodness factor comparison. Also, the mixtures of HFC-l34a and PAG oil was tested to determine oil effects on heat transfer and pressure drop. As oil concentration was increased, heat transfer coefficient was increased by 22~48% up to the 3wt.%, but decreased by 14~22% at the 4wt.%. The pressure drop was increased by the maximum of 100% as oil concentration was increased.

  • For the study of an effect that fin thickness and shape of heat exchanger have on the elevation of heat transfer efficiency, we make models of plate fin type heat exchanger and louvered fin type heat exchanger which was given a transformation of fin thickness in plate f)n type heat exchanger and louvered fin type heat exchanger which are often used now. And the effect of fin thickness on pressure drop and characteristics of heat transfer was experimented and analysed when air velocity and temperature of plate heating was a variable. The results of experiment shows below. Pressure drop shows larger in louvered fin type exchanger than in plate fin type exchanger, size of pressure drop shows like this order that fin thickness is 0.3mm, 0.2mm, 0.1mm. Mean heat transfer coefficient shows higher in louvered fin type exchanger than in plate fin type exchanger, size of mean heat transfer coefficient by fin thickness shows same in both case in louvered fin type heat exchanger and plate fin type exchanger like this order that fin thickness is 0.1mm, 0.2mm, 0.3mm.

  • In this study, heat transfer and Pressure drop characteristics for R-718 in the plate and shell heat exchanger (P&SHE) investigated experimentally. The plates are circular and welded into a stack which fits into a cylindrical shell in P&SHE. Although apparently very different from rectangular the compact brazed plate heat exchanger (CBE), the underlying flow passage structure through the P&SHE is the same as in the CBE. The R-718 between plate side and shell side was performed a counterflow heat exchange. Heat transfer characteristic of R-718 were measured for turbulent flow in P&SHE by using wilson plot technique. Heat transfer experiment Ivas performed in the $200{\leq}Re{\leq}500$ regime and Pressure drop experiment was performed in the $150{\leq}Re{\leq}1600$ regime. The purpose of this study is to investigate heat transfer and friction factor correlations for R-718 in P&SHE and to offer fundamental data for experiment

  • Heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of welded plate heat exchanger are studied to apply it for the solution heat exchanger of 210RT absorption system. This study quantifies the effect of mass flow rate and strong solution concentration on the heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop in the plate heat exchanger. The concentration of weak solution is fixed at 55% and the strong solution varies 55%, 57%, and 59% in mass. The results show that the overall heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop increase linearly with increasing Reynolds number. It is also found that the heat transfer coefficient of hot side increases with increasing the concentration of strong solution while the strong solution concentration has no effect on heat transfer coefficient of cold side.

  • The present study is directed at flow and heat transfer of $CO_2$ and oil mixtures in a circular tube. PAG and POE oils are considered in this study. Flow characteristics of $CO_2$ and oil mixtures have been investigated by flow visualization. Pressure drop has been measured in the range of operating mass flow rate from 0.1 to 0.4 kg/min in a circular tube. Heat transfer characteristics of $CO_2$/oil mixtures have been investigated using a counterflow heat exchanger. In case of pure liquid $CO_2$ as well as $CO_2$ and POE mixtures, flow are seen to be uniform so that $CO_2$ and POE oil are still miscible even at flowing state. However, it is found that $CO_2$ and PAG are not miscible. Pressure drop of $CO_2$/PAG mixtures are much higher than that of $CO_2$/POE mixtures as well as pure $CO_2$ at a fixed mass flow rate. As the concentration of POE oil is increased from 0 to 5 wt%, pressure drop is increased. However, heat transfer rate and heat transfer coefficient of $CO_2$/POE mixtures are much higher than that of $CO_2$/PAG mixtures. The f-factor correlation and Nusselt number correlation for $CO_2$/POE oil mixtures are suggested in this paper.

  • As a par of a project related to the development of the design algorithm of a compact heat exchanger for the application of the electronic home appliances, the effect of the discreteness of the airflow boundary generated on the cooling fin surface on the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics of the heat exchanger was studied numerically. In general, there are two critical design parameters seriously considered in the design of the heat exchanger; heat transfer rate(Q) and pressure drop coefficient(C/sub p/). Even though the higher heat transfer rate with lower pressure drop characteristics is required in a design of the heat exchanger, it is not an easy job to satisfy both conditions at the same time because these two parameters are phenomenally inversely proportional. To control the boundary layer thickness and its length along the streamline, the surface of the flat fin was modified to accelerate the heat transfer rate on the fin surface. To understand the effect of the discreted fin size(S/sub w/) and its location(S/sub h/) on the performance of the heat exchanger in the airflow field, the flat fin was modified as shown in Fig. 1. From this study, it was found that the smaller and more number of slits on the fin surface showed the higher energy diffusion rate. It means that the discreteness of the boundary layer is quite important on the heat transfer rate of the heat exchanger. On the other hand, if the fin surface configuration is very complex than needed, higher static pressure drop occurs than required in a system and it may be a reason of the induced aerodynamic noise in the heat exchanger.

  • The present study was investigates the effect of the parameters on the frost formation and heat transfer performance such as fin shape, air temperature and air velocity. Heat transfer rate and pressure drop by frost were experimentally investigated. Effect of the wet blub temperature and air velocity on the heat transfer performance has been also investigated. The heat transfer performance of the louver fin and tube type heat exchanger was higher by maximum of 0.85% than the corrugate fin type at the air temperature of $2.0/1.5^{\circ}C$. As the wet blub temperature of air were increased, the heat transfer rate, pressure drop and mass of frost of three test models were increased. Especially, the maximum heat transfer rate and maximum pressure drop were shown for the Type B louver fin heat exchanger. As an experimental result, the enhancement factor(EF) of louver fin and tube type heat exchanger was only $0.2{\sim}0.4$ due to the high pressure drop.

  • This paper reviews the studies on the pressure drop and the heat transfer in microchannels. Although a lot of studies about the single-phase flow have been done until now, conflicting results are occasionally reported about flow transition from laminar flow to turbulent flow, friction factor, and Nusselt number. Some studies reported the early flow transition due to relatively greater wall effect like surface roughness, but the other studies showed that the flow transition occurred at the Reynolds number of about 2300 and the early flow transition might be due to less accurate measurement of the channel geometry. Also, there have been arguments whether the conventional relation based upon continuum theory can be applied to the fluid flow and the heat transfer in microchannels without modification or not. The studies about the two-phase flow in microchannels have been mostly about investigating the flow pattern and the pressure drop in rectangular channels using two-component, two-phase flow like air/water mixture. Some studies proposed correlations to predict two-phase flow pressure drop in microchannels. They were mostly based on Lockhart-Martinelli model with modification on C-coefficient, which was dependent on channel geometry, Reynolds number, surface tension, and so on. Others investigated the characteristics of flow boiling heat transfer in microchannels with respect to test parameters such as mass flux, heat flux, system pressure, and so on. The existing studies have not been fully satisfactory in providing consistent results about the pressure drop and the heat transfer in microchannels. Therefore, more in-depth studies should be done for understanding the fundamentals of the transport phenomena in the microchannels and giving the basic guidelines to design the micro devices.

  • The key process used in nuclear industries for the management of radiotoxicity associated with spent fuel in a closed fuel cycle is solvent extraction. An understanding of hydrodynamics and mass transfer is of primary importance for the design of mass transfer equipment used in solvent extraction processes. Understanding the interfacial phenomenon and the associated hydrodynamics of the liquid drops is essential for model-based design of mass transfer devices. In this work, the phenomenon of drop formation at the tip of a nozzle submerged in quiescent immiscible liquid phase is revisited. Previously reported force balance based models and empirical correlations are analyzed. Experiments are carried out to capture the process of drop formation using high-speed imaging technique. The images are digitally processed to measure the average drop diameter. A correlation based on the force balance model is proposed to estimate drop diameter and jet length. The average drop diameter obtained from the proposed model is in good agreement with experimental data with an average error of 6.3%. The developed model is applicable in both the necking as well as jetting regime and is validated for liquid-liquid systems having low, moderate and high interfacial tension.
