  • To clarify the hydraulic characteristics of ice slurry which made from 6.5% ethylene glycol-water solution flowing through circular pipes of small diameter, experimental studies were performed. The flow pattern was observed and the pressure drop was measured in acrylic pipes with inner diameter of 24 mm. The results of flow visualization revealed that ice particles flowed along the top of pipes in the ranges of small ice fraction and low flow rate, while Ice particles diffused into the whole region of pipes flowed like a homogeneous flow for high flow rate and high ice fraction. An increase in frictional pressure drop was measured as the ice fraction increased in all pipes and unstable flow was observed for up-ward vertical pipe.

  • The main objective of the present study is to perform an experimental evaluation of five existing correlations for the subchannel pressure drop analysis of a wire-wrapped fuel assembly. For this purpose, a series of water experiments have been performed using a helical wire-wrapped 19-pin fuel assembly for various test parameters. Four different test sections with different pitch to rod diameter ratios (P/D) and wire lead length to rod diameter ratios (H/D) have been fabricated. A series of pressure drop measurements were made to obtain friction factors for these four test sections. The new data along with existing data are used to evaluate existing correlations. Both the original and the simplified Cheng and Todreas correlations give the best agreement with experimental data for all flow regions.

  • Oil drop formation during the underwater oil discharge is investigated experimentally. The focus is placed on the size of the drops formed with the variation of discharge speed and nozzle diameter. As the Reynolds number based on the nozzle diameter increases, the droplet size decreases first and then increases until an explosive atomization occurs. The length of the jet attached to the nozzle Increases with the Reynolds number and then decreases. The transition occurs when the flow becomes asymmetry.

  • The objectives of this paper are to obtain an empirical equations regarding the correlations between heat transfer and pressure drop of oval fin-tube heat exchanger having large diameter using wilson plot method. It was difficult to find any recommendable heat transfer and friction factor correlation available for our large diameter experimental cases. Overall heat transfer coefficients are composed of the heat transfer coefficients both inside and outside tubes. The resulting empirical correlations for the Nui and f-factor are given as $Nu_i=0.0146Re^{0.809}Pr^{0.3}$ and $f=4.366Re^{-0.64}$, respectively. The empirical correlations of the Nui and f-factors were developed for the large diameter oval finned-tube heat exchanger as a function of the Reynolds number. As the EG(Ethylene glycol) and air flow rate increases, the heat transfer rate and pressure drop is increased largely.

  • The evaporation heat transfer and pressure drop of $CO_2$ in a small diameter tube was investigated experimentally. The experiments were conducted without oil in a closed refrigerant loop which was driven by a magnetic gear pump. The main components of the refrigerant loop are a receiver, a variable-speed pump, a mass flow meter, a pre-heater and evaporator(test section). The test section was made of a horizontal stainless steel tube with the inner diameter of 4.57 mm, and length of 4 m. The experiments were conducted at mass flux of 200 to 700 $kg/m^2s$, saturation temperature of $0^{\circ}C$ to $20^{\circ}C$, and heat flux of 10 to 20 $kW/m^2$ . The test results showed the evaporation heat transfer of $CO_2$ has great effect on more nucleate boiling than convective boiling. The evaporation heat transfer coefficients of $CO_2$ are highly dependent on the vapor quality, heat flux and saturation temperature. The evaporation pressure drop of C02 are highly dependent on the mass flux. In comparison with test results and existing correlations, correlations failed to predict the evaporation heat transfer coefficient and pressure drop of $CO_2$, therefore, it is necessary to develop reliable and accurate predictions determining the evaporation heat transfer coefficient and friction pressure drop of $CO_2$ in a horizontal tube.

  • This study has been conducted to provide fundamental knowledge of the characteristics of pressure drop through porous metal by experimental investigation. Pressure drop of air passing through porous metal was measured. The influences of porosity and flow velocity on pressure drop were investigated and in view of friction factor, the experimental data was compared with theorical equation as known to Ergun's equation concerning unconsolid packed bed. The result of this study are as follows. The pressure drop was increased with increasing the flow velocity and at the same flow velocity with decreasing the porosity(decreasing the particle diameter), In Particular, the experimental equation for the pressure drop was derived using the particle diameter, matrix diameter and matrix thickness. The experimental data were correlated well(mean deviation ${\pm}15%$ )with the present empirical dimensionless equation.

  • To make compact evaporator, experiments that show characteristics of evaporating heat transfer and pressure drop in the helically coiled small diameter tube were taken in this research. The experiments were performed with HCFC-22 in the helically coiled small diameter tube; inner diameter=1.0(mm), tube length=2.0(m), and curvature diameter=31, 34, 46.2(mm). The experiments were also carried out with the following test conditions; saturation pressure=0.588(MPa), mass velocity=$150{\sim}500(kg/m^2s)$, and heat flux=$1{\sim}5(kW/m^2)$. The experiment results are that the empirical correlation to predict heat transfer coefficient for single phase flow in helically coiled small diameter tube was obtained. It was found that dry-out is occurred at low-quality region for evaporation heat transfer because of breaking of annular liquid film. The friction factor of single phase flow of helically coiled tube was agreed with Prandtl's correlation. Finally, It was proposed for correlation that can precisely predict the friction factor of two phase flow of helically coiled tube.

  • In this study, condensation heat transfer experiments were conducted in two small diameter (ø17.5, ø4.0) tubes. Comparison with the existing in-tube condensation heat transfer correlations indicated that these correlations over predict the present data. For example, Akers correlation over predicted the data up to 104 %. The condensation heat transfer coefficient of the ø4.0 I.D. tube was smaller than that of the ø7.5 I.D tube; at the mass velocity of 300 kg/$m^2$s, the difference was 12 %. The pressure drop data of the small diameter tubes were highly (two to six times) over predicted by the Lockhart-Martinelli correlation. Sub-cooled forced convection heat transfer test confirmed that Gnielinski's single phase heat transfer correlation predicted the data reasonably well.

  • Single phase pressure drops in micro tubes were investigated through an experimental measurement and a numerical simulation. Experimental Po was obtained in circular micro tubes with 87 and $118{\mu}m$ diameter with distilled water. Experiments were carried out in laminar flow region with varying the Re 15-450 for the $87{\mu}m$ diameter tubes and 60-1300 for the $118{\mu}m$ diameter tube. No early transition from laminar to turbulent flow was detected for the experimental range. The computational estimation of pressure drop in the $87{\mu}m$ diameter tube was performed with the aid of CFD software. Boundary conditions from experiments were used for the numerical simulation. The results of experimental and numerical studies showed a good agreement with the conventional macro theory.
