Antibacterial Activity and Mechanical Properties of Poly(Lactic-Acid) Composites Containing Zeolite-type Inorganic Bacteriocide

  • We studied the antibacterial effect and mechanical properties of PLA composites with in organic porous zeolite-type bacteriocides. The specimens were prepared by an intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder using different contents of inorganic bacteriocide. The degree of dispersion of the in organic bacteriocide in the PLA composite was confirmed by FE-SEM. The contents of Ag and Zn in the composite were also investigated by energy dispersive spectroscopy at different concentrations of the inorganic bacteriocide. The antibacterial effects were analyzed by turbidity analysis, shaking culture, and drop-test. The mechanical properties, such as the tensile and flexural properties, impact strength, and physical properties, were also investigated. As the content of inorganic bacteriocide increased, the antibacterial activity was increased, especially against Staphylococcus aureus. Mechanical properties, namely, tensile strength, elongation, flexural strength, and impact strength, tended to decrease with an increase in inorganic bacteriocide content, but the tensile and flexural modulus increased.

  • On the urban scale, Micro-climate analysis models for urban scale have been developed to investigate the atmospheric characteristics in urban surface in detail and to predict the micro-climate change due to the changes in urban structure. BioCAS (Biometeorological Climate Impact Assessment System) is a system that combines such analysis models and has been implemented internally in the Korea Meteorological Administration. One of role in this system is the analysis of the health impact by heat waves in urban area. In this study, the vegetation cooling models A and B were developed and linked with BioCAS and evaluated by the temperature drop at the vegetation areas during ten selected heat-wave days. Smaller prediction errors were found as a result of applying the vegetation cooling models to the heat-wave days. In addition, it was found that the effects of the vegetation cooling models produced different results according to the distribution of vegetation area in land cover near each observation site - the improvement of the model performance on temperature analysis was different according to land use at each location. The model A was better fitted where the surrounding vegetation ratio was 50% or more, whereas the model B was better where the vegetation ratio was less than 50% (higher building and impervious areas). Through this study, it should be possible to select an appropriate vegetation cooling model according to its fraction coverage so that the temperature analysis around built-up areas would be improved.

Collision-Damage Analysis of a Floating Offshore Wind Turbine Considering Ship-Collision Risk

  • As the number of offshore wind-power installations increases, collision accidents with vessels occur more frequently. This study investigates the risk of collision damage with operating vessels that may occur during the operation of an offshore wind turbine. The floater used in the collision study is a 15 MW UMaine VolturnUS-S (semi-submersible type), and the colliding ships are selected as multi-purpose vessels, service operation vessels, or anchor-handling tug ships based on their operational purpose. Collision analysis is performed using ABAQUS and substantiation is performed via a drop impact test. The collision analyses are conducted by varying the ship velocity, displacement, collision angle, and ship shape. By applying this numerical model, the extent of damage and deformation of the collision area is confirmed. The analysis results show that a vessel with a bulbous bow can cause flooding, depending on the collision conditions. For damage caused by collision, various collision angles must be considered based on the internal stiffener arrangement. Additionally, the floater can be flooded with relatively small collision energy when the colliding vessel has a bulbous bow.

  • Properties of agricultural products are important for engineering design and analysis with respect to their mechanical harvesting, handling, transporting and processing. Researcher have presented the data of properties for various kinds of agricultural products. These data, however, are obtained from the materials produced in foreign countries, and a very few data could be found in Korea. In this paper, emphasis put on the importance of measuring the properties of agricultural products through an extensive review of literatures, and some experimental results on the viscoelastic and elastic properties of the materials are presented. Viscoelastic characteristics of some agricultural materials, specifically the force-deformation-time relationship of the whole orange and cylindrical samples of cheese under different types of loading were investigated. In elastic test, the response of apple during an impact and the relationships among various parameters such u degree of damage, drop height and absorbed energy were determined.

컨테이너형태의 방사성물질 A형 운반용기에 대한 구조해석 (Structural Analysis for the Container-Shaped Type A Package of Radioactive Materials)

  • 원자력발전소의 1차 계통에서 오염된 장비들을 취급이 용이하고 안전하게 운반하기 위한 운반용기는 내부의 방사성 물질에 대한 방사능 평가에 의하여 방사성물질 A형 운반용기로 분류된다. 방사성물질 A형 운반용기는 IAEA Safety Standard Series No. ST-1 및 국내 원자력법 등 관련규정의 기술기준을 만족하여야 하는데, 운반용기는 중량에 따라 0.3∼1.2m의 높이에서 소성이 일어나지 않는 단단한 바닥면으로 가장 심각한 손상을 주는 방향으로 낙하시키는 정상운반조건(normal transport conditions)에 대하여 구조적 건전성을 유지하여야 한다. 여기서는 ABAQUS/Explicit 코드를 이용하여 컨테이너형태의 A형 운반용기에 대하여 최대손상이 야기되는 0.9m 경사낙하조건에 대한 3차원 충격해석을 수행하고 구조적 건전성을 평가하였는데, 운반용기는 경사낙하시 코너피팅(corner fitting)의 분쇄(crush)에 의하여 대부분의 충격을 흡수하였으며 운반용기의 격납경계는 구조적 건전성을 유지하였다.

Effects of different roll angles on civil aircraft fuselage crashworthiness

  • Crashworthiness design and certification have been and will continue to be the main concern in aviation safety. The effects of roll angles on fuselage section crashworthiness for typical civil transport category aircrafts were investigated. A fuselage section with waved-plates under cargo floor is suggested, and the finite element model of fuselage section is developed to simulate drop test subjected to 7 m/s impact velocity under conditions of 0-deg, 5-deg, 10-deg and 15-deg roll angles, respectively. A comparative analysis of failure modes, acceleration responses, and energy absorption of fuselage section under various conditions are given. The results show that the change of roll angles will significantly affect fuselage deformation, seat peak overloads, and energy absorption. The crashworthiness capability of aircraft can be effectively improved by choosing appropriate landing way.

혼잡해소를 위한 도로건설의 정책효과: 시스템 다이내믹스 이론의 적용 (Policy Impact Analysis of Road Transport Investment via System Dynamics Theory)

  • Congestion problems can be approached from the viewpoint of system dynamics theory. The relationship between road capacity and congestion can be explained by the 'relative control' archetype among four system archetypes suggested by Wolstenholme. There is a balancing feedback loop between road capacity and road congestion. However, there is another balancing loop between road congestion and car traffic volume, which keeps disrupting the equilibrium of the former loop. A system dynamics model, which is based on a partial adjustment model of induced traffic in the literature, is built to simulate three road building scenarios: 'Expanding investment', 'Balancing investment' and 'Frozen road investment' scenarios. The 'Expanding investment' scenario manages to drop congestion levels by 9% over 30 years, however, causing much higher emissions of $CO_2$ than other scenarios. The trade-off relationship between congestion levels and environmental costs must be taken into consideration for road investment policies.

Comparison of fully coupled hydroelastic computation and segmented model test results for slamming and whipping loads

  • This paper presents a numerical analysis of slamming and whipping using a fully coupled hydroelastic model. The coupled model uses a 3-D Rankine panel method, a 1-D or 3-D finite element method, and a 2-D Generalized Wagner Model (GWM), which are strongly coupled in time domain. First, the GWM is validated against results of a free drop test of wedges. Second, the fully coupled method is validated against model test results for a 10,000 twenty-foot equivalent unit (TEU) containership. Slamming pressures and whipping responses to regular waves are compared. A spatial distribution of local slamming forces is measured using 14 force sensors in the model test, and it is compared with the integration of the pressure distribution by the computation. Furthermore, the pressure is decomposed into the added mass, impact, and hydrostatic components, in the computational results. The validity and characteristics of the numerical model are discussed.

탄성플랫폼 충격응답 스펙트럼 기준에 따른 다기능콘솔 충격해석 연구 (A Study on the Shock Analysis of the Multi-Function Console According to the Shock Response Spectrum Requirements of the Elastic Platform)

  • Prior to installation in a navy ship, shipboard equipment should be qualified by shock test requirements. The multi-function console mounted on the elastic platform of the ship should also withstand given shock loads. In this study, both real shock test methods, as well as numerical computer simulations using the finite element method were used to verify structural durability under shock load conditions. First, we used domestic test facilities to perform possible shock tests, including an impact hammer test, a drop table test and a shaker shock test. Full model tests satisfying the shock response spectrum level were performed. Thereafter, an analytical model of the complex console structure was built by the finite element method. Finally, numerical results were verified by modal test results of the real product and an FEA analysis was also performed with a full model transient response analysis.

  • 유체가속부식에 의한 탄소강 배관의 감육은 원자력 발전소 저탄소강 배관의 주요 경년열화 현상으로서, 예상치 못한 배관의 파단을 야기해 발전소의 성능 및 안전을 저해할 수 있다. 최근, 등전위 교번식 직류 전위차법(ES-DCPD, equipotential switching direct current potential drop)을 이용한 배관 감육의 정밀 감시기법이 본 연구자들에 의하여 개발되었다. ES-DCPD 방법은 넓은 배관 영역을 빠르게 검사할 수 있는 방법으로, 넓은 영역의 직관부 감육을 빠르게 검사하는 광역감시법(WiRN, wide range monitoring)과 엘보우 등 곡관부의 감육이 활발한 컴포넌트의 국부적 감육을 비교적 넓은 범위에서 빠르게 스캔하는 협역감시법(NaRM, narrow range monitoring)으로 사용이 가능하다. 광역감시와 협역감시 기법은 초음파검사의 위치 선정파 초음파검사의 검사 누락부에 대한 신뢰성을 개선할 수 있을 것이다. 본 논문에서는 ES-DCPD를 바탕으로 한 새로운 감육 진단 기술을 실험실 환경에서 장기 검증 시험을 수행하여 신호 정밀도를 분석하였고, 결과의 현장 적용성을 논의하였다.
