  • This study was performed to explore the liquid breakup and atomization characteristics for the classification of drop formation mode and background of uniform droplets generation in electrohydrodynmaic atomization according to the change of experimental parameters such as nozzle material (stainless steel. teflon). fluid flow rate, applied electrical field and intensity, and frequency. In results, from the classification map of drop formation modes according to the variation of applied AC voltage and frequency at a stainless nozzle, the droplet size was smaller than the outer diameter of the nozzle tip relatively in the spindle mode. The transition points became clearly to be moved toward the high applied voltage by rising the applied AC frequency beyond 450Hz. Also the droplet radius can be observed quite small in the frequency bandwidth of $350{\sim}450Hz$. The droplet radiuses decrease as the applied voltage increases for a fixed applied AC frequency within the range from 50Hz to 400Hz Over 400Hz, the relation between the power intensity and the droplet size was not consistent with a continuous mechanism of liquid breakup. Thus, it is showed that the droplet size distribution using the teflon nozzle was analogous to the results of stainless steel, but the droplet size was bigger than that of stainless steel relatively in case of a teflon nozzle.

  • This paper presents spray and combustion characteristics of hydrocarbon fuel injected from pressure-swirl nozzles. Three commercial nozzles with orifice diameters of 0.256, 0.308 and 0.333mm and injection pressures ranging from 0.7 to 1.3 MPa were selected f9r the experiments. Spray characteristics such as breakup length. spray angle and drop size (SMD) were analyzed using photo image analyses and Malvern Panicle Size Analyzer. The drop size was measured with and without a blower at the same measuring locations. The flame length and width were measured using photo image analyses. The temperature distribution along the axial distance and the gas emission such as CO, $CO_2\;and\;NO_x$ were studied. The breakup length decreased with an increase in injection pressure for each nozzle but increased with an increase in nozzle orifice diameter. The spray angle increased and SMD decreased with an increase in injection pressure. The flame with an increased linearly with an increase in injection pressure and in nozzle orifice diameter. The flame temperature increased with an increase in injection pressure but decreased along the axial distance. The maximum temperatures occurred closer to the burner exit and flame at axial distance of 242mm from the diffuser tip. The experimental results showed that the level of CO decreased while that of $CO_2\;and\;NO_x$ increased with an increase in injection pressure and nozzle orifice diameter.

  • Dynamic control tests for Backhole as a dynamic damper were performed. For the forced oscillation generated by pressure drop in the feed line and internal wave analysis of swirl injector, hydrodynamic pulsator and 1D visualization model injector was produced, respectively We focus on effect of Backhole as a dynamic damper instead of a acoustic one. So, the breakup length and film thickness of liquid sheet on the steady state and the forced oscillation state have been measured and compared.

  • This paper presents an atomization model for sprays under flash boiling conditions. The atomization is represented by the secondary breakup of a bubble/droplet system, and the breakup is considered as the results of two competing mechanisms, aerodynamic force and bubble growth. The model was applied to predict the atomization of a hollow-cone spray from pintle injector under flash boiling conditions. In the regimes this study considered, sprays are atomized by bubble growth, which produces smaller SMD#s than aerodynamic forces alone. With decreasing ambient pressures, the spray thickness, fuel vaporization rate and vapor radial penetration increases, and the drop size decreases. With increasing the fuel and ambient temperatures to some extent, the effect of flash boiling and air entrainment completely change the spray pattern.

  • An experimental study was performed to investigate the liquid breakup and atomization characteristics in electrohydrodynamic atomization according to the changing of experimental parameters such as nozzle size, fluid flow, and electrical intensity. An original electrohydrodynamic atomizer equipment was designed and manufactured for the analysis of spray visualization and the exploration of relationship between applied power and the behavior of liquid atomization. The image processing technique by using the back-illumination method was applied to visualize the distilled liquid breakup process and to examine the variation of the droplet size distribution. The results show that the spray modes of electrohydrodynamic atomization are closelyconnected by the strength of the electric stresses at the surface of the liquid film and the kinetic energy of the liquid jet leaving the needle tip.

  • In this study, the effect of injection pressure on the column diameter and droplet velocity of liquid jet with the weakly turbulent Rayleigh-like breakup mode is experimentally studied using digital microscopic holography (DMH). The injection nozzle has the diameter of $50{\mu}m$ and injection pressure is varied from 0.1 to 0.4 MPa. When the micro liquid jet is injected into still air, the double-pulsed holograms was recorded on a CCD sensor and numerically reconstructed in order to obtain well focused images. In this study, the liquid column diameter from $50{\mu}m$ orifice nozzle is shown to be changed slightly but the droplet velocity is increased proportionally as the injection pressure is increased.

  • In this experimental study, measurement techniques such as backlight imaging, optical patternator, and laser sheet drop sizing were applied to characterize open-type swirl injector used in Russian liquid rocket engine, RD 107. The typical development of swirl spray was observed in backlight images. The breakup length was measured by using the ratio between Mie scattering and fluorescence signal. Relative Sauter Mean Diameter was measured by using laser sheet drop sizing and the possible source of errors were discussed.

  • Four swirl coaxial injectors with different recess lengths were manufactured using an additive manufacturing method. Single-injection and bi-injection cold-flow experiments were performed using water and air as simulated propellants in an atmospheric pressure environment. According to the recess length and propellant flow conditions, the injection pressure drop and discharge coefficient were investigated, and the breakup length and spray angle were measured using an image processing technique. In the bi-injection pressure drop and discharge coefficient results, the liquid-side injector was not affected by the recess. For the gas-side injector, however, the injection pressure drop increased and the discharge coefficient decreased as the recess length increased. The breakup length in the single-injection increased with the increase of the recess, but decreased in the bi-injection.

  • The mode change from Taylor cone-jet to dripping in electrospraying has been analytically investigated. The change has been predicted by the dynamic behavior of a liquid drop at the tip of the cone-jet. Conservation laws are applied to determine the upward motion of the drop, and an instability model of electrified jets is used to determine the jet breakup. Finally, for the first time, the analysis enables prediction of the transition in terms of the Weber number and electric Bond number. The predictions are in good agreement with experimental data.

  • In this study the effect of collision model was evaluated in spray field by CFD. A collision is basically the interaction between droplets and criteria of collision is determined by drop Weber number, impact parameter, and drop-size ratio. Early developed collision model considered coalescence and grazing collision with the exchange of momentum. However in experimental research there were bouncing, coalescence, reflexive separating and stretching separating in interaction between droplets. In this study the collision considering such complex phenomena is modeled and was compared with the basic collision model.
