In the variable speed Wind Turbine based on ElectroMagnetic Coupler (WT-EMC), a synchronous generator is coupled directly to the grid. Therefore, like conventional power plants, WT-EMC is able to inherently support grid frequency. However, due to the reduced inertia of the synchronous generator, WT-EMC is expected to be controlled to increase its output power in response to a grid frequency drop to support grid frequency. Similar to the grid frequency support control of Type 3 or Type 4 wind turbine, inertial control and droop control can be used to calculate the WT-EMC additional output power reference according to the synchronous generator speed. In this paper, an experimental platform is built to study the grid frequency support from WT-EMC with inertial control and droop control. Two synchronous generators, driven by two induction motors controlled by two converters, are used to emulate the synchronous generators in conventional power plants and in WT-EMCs respectively. The effectiveness of the grid frequency support from WT-EMC with inertial control and droop control responding to a grid frequency drop is validated by experimental results. The selection of the grid frequency support controller and its gain for WT-EMC is analyzed briefly.
Battery energy storage devices (ESDs) have become more and more commonplace to maintain the stability of islanded power systems. Considering the limitation in inverter capacity and the requirement of flexibility in the ESD, the droop control was implemented in paralleled ESDs for higher capacity and autonomous operation. Under the conventional droop control, state-of-charge (SoC) errors between paralleled ESDs is inevitable in the discharging operation. Thus, some ESDs cease operation earlier than expected. This paper proposes an adaptive accelerating parameter to improve the performance of the SoC error eliminating droop controller under the constraints of a microgrid. The SoC of a battery ESD is employed in the active power droop coefficient, which could eliminate the SoC error during the discharging process. In addition, to expedite the process of SoC error elimination, an adaptive accelerating parameter is dedicated to weaken the adverse effect of the constraints due to the requirement of the system running. Moreover, the stability and feasibility of the proposed control strategy are confirmed by small-signal analysis. The effectiveness of the control scheme is validated by simulation and experiment results.

This paper proposes the 80-kW high-efficiency bidirectional hybrid SiC boost/buck converter using droop control for DC nano-grid. The proposed converter consists of four 20-kW modules to achieve fault tolerance, ease of thermal management, and reduced component stress. Each module is constructed as a cascaded structure of the two basic bi-directional converters, namely, interleaved boost and buck converters. A six-pack hybrid SiC intelligent power module (IPM) suitable for the proposed cascaded structure is adopted for high-efficiency and compactness. The proposed converter with hybrid switching method reduces the switching loss by minimizing switching of insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT). Each module control achieves smooth transfer from buck to boost operation and vice versa, since current controller switchover is not necessary. Furthermore, the proposed parallel control using DC droop with secondary control, enhances the current sharing accuracy while well regulating the DC bus voltage. A 20-kW prototype of the proposed converter has been developed and verified with experiments and indicates a 99.3% maximum efficiency and 98.8% rated efficiency.

The engine idle speed mode becomes worse as one drives a vehicle for several years. This is due to ageing of engine and power-train parts. In this case, unstable idle conditions such as engine stall and droop are frequently experienced when the engine gets heavy torque loads due to power steering pump and air conditioning compressor. The objective of this paper is to study on the idle speed control using PID controller under load disturbances. The input of the PID controller is an error of rpm. The output of the PID controller is an ISCV duty cycle. The dSPACE Controller Boards are used to interface with engine. The on-vehicle test is realized using by SIMULINK and BLOCKSETS tools. The real time interface control panel supplied by Control Desk S/W is designed to have good results in engine idle speed control.

This paper proposes a new output voltage control scheme based on the SoC variation of the battery energy storage system (BESS) applicable for the stand-alone DC microgrid. The proposed control scheme provides relatively lower variation of the DC grid voltage than the conventional droop method. The performance of proposed control scheme was verified through computer simulations for a typical stand-alone DC microgrid which consists of BESS, photo-voltaic (PV) panel, engine generator (EG), and DC load. A scaled hardware prototype for the stand-alone DC microgrid with DSP controller was set up in the lab, and the proposed control algorithm was installed in the DSP controller. The test results were compared with the simulation results for performance verification and actual system implementation.
The concept of virtual synchronous generators (VSGs) is a valuable means for improving the frequency stability of microgrids (MGs). However, a great virtual inertia in a VSG's controller may cause power oscillation, thereby deteriorating system stability. In this study, a small-signal model of an MG with two paralleled VSGs is established, and a control strategy for maintaining a constant inertial time with an increasing active-frequency droop coefficient (m) is proposed on the basis of a root locus analysis. The power oscillation is suppressed by adjusting virtual synchronous reactance, damping coefficient, and load frequency coefficient under the same inertial time constant. In addition, the dynamic load distribution is sensitive to the controller parameters, especially under the parallel operation of VSGs with different capacities. Therefore, an active power increment method is introduced to improve the precision of active power sharing in dynamic response. Simulation and experimental is used to verify the theoretical analysis findings.
In this paper, an intelligent control scheme based on Fuzzy PID controller is proposed for accurate power sharing in DC Microgrid. The proposed Fuzzy PID controller is designed with the aid of a closed loop control based on per unit power of each distributed generator (DG), and accurate power sharing is successfully realized in proportional to each DG's power rating regardless of the line resistance difference or the load change. Thanks to Fuzzy PID controller, the dynamic response becomes faster and the stability of the microgrid system are improved in comparison to conventional PID controller. The superiority of the proposed method is analyzed and verified by simulation in Matlab and Simulink.
This paper presents the modeling, control and simulation of an interconnection system (ICS) of cascaded distributed generation (DG) modules for both grid-tied and stand-alone operations. The overall configuration of the interconnection system is given. The interconnection system consists of a cascaded DC/DC boost converters and a DC/AC inverter. Detailed modeling of the interconnection system incorporating a cascaded architecture has not been considered in previous research. In this paper, suitable control systems for the cascaded architecture of power electronic converters in an interconnection system have been studied and modeled in detail. A novel control system for DC/DC boost converters is presented based on a droop voltage controller. Also, a novel control strategy for DC/AC inverters based on the average large signal model to control the aggregated DG modules under both grid-tied and stand-alone modes is demonstrated. Simulation results indicate the effectiveness of the proposed control systems.

This study proposes a hardware-in-the-loop simulation (HILS) system based on National Instruments' PXI platform to test power management and operation strategies for DC microgrids (MGs). The HILS system is developed based on the controller HIL prototype, which involves testing the controller board in hardware with a real-time simulation model of the plant in a real-time digital simulator. The system provides an economical and effective testing function for research on MG systems. The decentralized power management strategy based on the DC bus signaling method for DC MGs has been developed and implemented on the HILS platform. HILS results are determined to be similar to those of the off-line simulation in PSIM software.
