This research was performed to supplement the previous research about the driving rain index (DRI) for Korea determined by using daily weather data for 30 years. The average annual driving rain index (AADRI) was calculated from the hourly weather data, and the magnitude of DRI was investigated according to wind directions. The hourly climate data were obtained from the Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) for the period 2009 to 2017. Of 82 locations investigated, seven were classified into regions where the level of exposure of walls to rain was high. The result showed quite a difference from the previous results, in which no high exposure regions were observed. Since the hourly-based and the daily-based annual driving rain index (ADRI) values showed only a slight difference, the result may be explained by the length of the periods used in both studies. The change of DRI according to wind directions showed that there was a certain range of wind directions in which driving rain easily approached building walls. It suggests that the consideration of wind directions with high DRI would be useful to develop a good design of wooden buildings from the point of wood preservation and maintenance.
This paper describes an efficient method for improving the noise-robustness in speech recognition in a running car by considering wind noise. In driving car, mainly three kind of noises engine noise, tire noise and wind noise, are severely affect recognition performance. Especially wind noise is an important factor in driving car with window opened. We analyzed wind noise in various driving conditions that are 60, 80, 100 km/h with window fully opened, window half opened. We clarified that the recognition rate is significantly degenerated when the wind noise components in the frequency range above 200 Hz are large. We developed a preprocessing method to improve the noise robustness despite of wind noise. We adaptively changed the cutoff frequency of the front-end high-pass filter from 100 through 200 Hz according to the level of the wind noise components. By this method, the recognition rate is considerably improved for all kind of driving conditions

Sunroof is getting widely used in automobiles since it maintains, compare to window, better air circulation as well as less noise while driving in high speed. In this study, we consider an electronic control type spoiler sunroof which slides backward after tilting a rear part of a glass. Installing a wind deflector on the sunroof reduces noise much more effectively. The height of the wind deflector is designed using a boundary theory related to incompressible air layer. The developed wind deflector is investigated experimentally by measuring a wind noise. When the height of the wind deflector is designed by a fixed type, the sunroof maintains a very quiet interior noise over a certain driving speed, nevertheless it produces relatively loud noise in low driving speed.
This study presents a methodology to evaluate the driving safety of vehicles against localized high wind on the roads over the valleys or along the coasts. Risk level for vehicle accident is derived from the side slip caused by cross wind, and then safety criteria based on reliability for driving stability are defined. The level of safety is classified according to probability of exceeding against wind speed using the concept of extreme value statistics. To attain the safety level of vehicle on bridges, numerical simulations using Computational Fluid Dynamics(CFD) are performed. Based on this result, risk reduction and quality improvement is expected through analysis for each alternative in bridges design, construction and operation & maintenance stage with proposed process

The objective of vehicle aerodynamic design is on the fuel economy, reduction of the harmful emission, minimizing the vibration and noise and the driving stability of the vehicle. Especially for a sedan, the driving stability of the vehicle is the main concern of the aerodynamic design of the vehicle indeed. In this theoretical study, an evaluation algorithm of aerodynamic driving stability of a vehicle was made to estimate the dynamic stability of a vehicle at the given driving condition on a road. For the stability evaluation of a driving vehicle, CFD simulation was conducted to have the rolling, pitching and yawing moments of a model vehicle and compared the values of the moments to the resistance moments. From the case study, it is found that a model sedan running at 100 km/h in speed on a straight level road is stable under the side wind with 45 m/s in speed. But the different results may be obtained on the buses and trucks because those vehicles have the wide side area. From the case study of the model vehicle moving on 100 km/h speed with 15 m/s side wind is evaluated using the numerical algorithm drawn from the study, the value of yawing moment is $608.6N{\cdot}m$, rolling moment $-641N{\cdot}m$ and pitching moment $3.9N{\cdot}m$. These values are smaller than each value of rotational resistance moment the model vehicle has, and therefore, the model vehicle's driving stability is guaranteed when driving 100 km/h with 15 m/s side wind.

This study investigates the design criteria required for wind barriers to protect vehicles running on an expressway under a high side wind. At the first stage of this study, the lateral deviations of vehicles in crosswinds were computed from the commercial software, CarSim and TruckSim, and the critical wind speeds for a car accident were then evaluated from a predefined car accident index. The critical wind speeds for driving stability were found to be 35 m/s for a small passenger car, yet 30 m/s for a truck and a bus. From the wind tunnel tests, the minimum height of a wind barrier required to reduce the wind speed by 50% was found to be 12.5% of the road width. In the case of parallel bridges, the placement of two edge wind barriers plus one wind barrier at center was recommended for a separation distance larger than 20 m (four lanes) and 10 m (six lanes) respectively, otherwise two wind barriers were recommended.
This paper presents a program for protecting vehicles against side winds on highways. The present study consists of three processes. The first one involves giving a guideline for evaluating driving safety in high winds. The second one involves making a guideline for determining the necessity of wind protection system for a certain road area. A reasonable procedure is suggested based on the probability model of wind data on weather stations and the correction of local topographical conditions. The third one involves design of wind barriers. Both CFD analyses and wind tunnel tests were performed to find the proper type of wind barrier considering vehicle controllability, structural safety, economical efficiency as well as driver's visibility. Performance of the designed wind fences was verified from field tests. The performance of the four different types of wind barrier installed at the elevated bridge were tested and some of the results were provided.

Kyeonggi Provincial Government is considering double decker bus service to solve the problem of heavy rush hour traffic. However, the height-to-width ratio is more than 1.16 times larger than that of a general high-speed single decker bus, and the center of gravity is higher. This could cause driving stability problems, such as turnover and breakaway from the lane, especially under strong side-wind conditions at high speed. In this numerical study, the driving characteristics of a model double decker bus were reviewed under side-wind and superelevation conditions at high driving speed. The rolling, pitching, and yawing moment of the model bus were calculated with CFD numerical simulation, and the results were compared to the recovery angular moments of the model bus to evaluate the dynamic stability under given driving conditions. As the model vehicle moves on a straight level road, it is stable under any side-wind conditions. However, on a curved road under side-wind conditions, it could reach unstable conditions dynamically. There is a chance that the bus will turn over when it moves on a curved road with a radius of gyration less than 100 m under side-wind (15 m/s). However, there is a very small chance of breakaway from the lane under any driving conditions.
This paper presents a novel test method for the galloping of iced conductor using wind generated by a moving vehicle which can produce relative wind field. The theoretical formula of transiting test is developed based on theoretical derivation and field test. The test devices of transiting test method for aerodynamic coefficient and galloping of an iced conductor are designed and assembled, respectively. The test method is then used to measure the aerodynamic coefficient and galloping of iced conductor which has been performed in the relevant literatures. Experimental results reveal that the theoretical formula of transiting test method for aerodynamic coefficient of iced conductor is accurate. Moreover, the driving wind speed measured by Pitot tube pressure sensors, as well as the lift and drag forces measured by dynamometer in the transiting test are stable and accurate. Vehicle vibration slightly influences the aerodynamic coefficients of the transiting test during driving in ideal conditions. Results of transiting test show that the tendencies of the aerodynamic coefficient curve are generally consistent with those of the wind tunnel tests in related studies. Meanwhile, the galloping is fairly consistent with that obtained through the wind tunnel test in the related literature. These studies validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the transiting test method. The present study on the transiting test method provides a novel testing method for research on the wind-resistance of iced conductor.
This paper presents a practical numerical method to determine both the spatial and temporal distribution of driving rain on buildings. It is based on an existing numerical simulation technique and uses the building geometry and climatic data at the building site as input. The method is applied to determine the 3D spatial and temporal distribution of wind-driven rain on the facade a low-rise building of complex geometry. Distinct wetting patterns are found. The important causes giving rise to these particular patterns are identified : (1) sweeping of raindrops towards vertical building edges, (2) sweeping of raindrops towards top edges, (3) shelter effect by various roof overhang configurations. The comparison of the numerical results with full-scale measurements in both space and time for a number of on site recorded rain events shows the numerical method to yield accurate results.
