The purpose of this study is to evaluate representativeness of fuel-based emission factors. Twelve light-duty diesel vehicles which meet Euro-3 to 5 legislative emission limits were selected for emission tests. Second-by-second modal emission rates of vehicles were measured on a standard laboratory chassis dynamometer system. An off-cycle driving cycle was developed as a representative Korean real-world on-road driving cycle. Fuel-based emission factors were developed for short trip segments that involved in the selected driving cycle. Each segment was defined to have unit travel distance, which is 1 km, and characterized by its average speed and Relative Positive Acceleration (RPA). Fuel-based $NO_x$ emission factors demonstrate relatively good representativeness in terms of vehicle operation conditions. $NO_x$ emission factors are estimated to be within ${\pm}20%$ of area-wide emission factor under more than 40% of total driving situations. This result implies that the fuel-based $NO_x$ emission factor could be practically implemented into the on-road emission management strategies, such as a remote sensing device (RSD). High emitting vehicles as well as high emitting operating conditions heavily affect on the mean values and distributions of CO and THC emission factors. Few high emitting conditions are pulling up the mean value and biasing the distributions, which weaken representativeness of fuel-based CO and THC emission factors.
Worldwide harmonized light-duty vehicle test procedure (WLTP) for emission certification has been developed in WP.29 forum in UN ECE since 2007. The test procedure is expected to be applied to Korean light-duty diesel vehicles at the same time of adoption in Europe. The air pollutant emissions from light-duty vehicles have been regulated with weight per distance travelled which means the driving cycles can affect the results. The six Euro-5 light-duty diesel vehicles including sedan, SUV and truck have been tested with WLTP, NEDC which is used for emission certification for light-duty diesel vehicles, and CVS-75 to estimate how much particle number emission can be affected by different driving cycles. The averaged particle number emissions have not shown statistically meaningful difference. The maximum particle number emission have been found in Low speed phase of WLTP which is mainly caused by cooled engine conditions. The amount of particle number emission in cooled engine condition is much different as test vehicles. It means different technical solution is required in this aspect to cope with WLTP driving cycle.
$CO_2$ emission regulation will be prescribed and main issue in automotive industry. Mostly, vehicle's fuel efficiency deeply related to $CO_2$ emission is regulated by qualified driving test cycle by using chassis dynamometer and exhaust gas analyser. But, real driving fuel consumption rate depends so much on the individual usage profile and where it is being driven: city traffic, road conditions. In this study, vehicle model of fuel consumption rate for ICEV and PHEV was developed through co-simulation with CRUISE model and Simulink based on driving control model. The simulation results of fuel consumption rate were analysed with on-road vehicle data and compared with its official level.
In an early engine development, it is highly required to determine the Key Test Points at the main driving, zone and lessen those points to reduce a test duration. This paper describes that it is possible not only to predict the cycle fuel consumption[g/km], emissions[g/km] from engine data(BSFC[g/kWh], emissions[g/kWh]) but also to confirm the emission regulation potential before a vehicle test.
Recently, emission tests for heavy-duty vehicles have been conducted by heavy-duty engine dynamometer. But, it contains weaknesses that present inconveniences to install and uninstall engines and limitations to reflect on practical characteristics for vehicle driving. On the other hand, chassis dynamometer test is able to differentiate characteristics of real driving patterns due to the reason that vehicles can be examined by utilizing chassis dynamometer. This study aimed at comparing the characteristic of emitting regulatory substances of urban buses on Heavy-duty chassis dynamometer. The characteristic was analyzed based on vehicle speed by using both domestic and overseas developed heavy-duty vehicle test modes. As a result, this work attempted to investigate possibilities to take advantage of Heavy-duty vehicle test modes as a method to manage emissions from heavy-duty vehicles.
Design consideration on electric drivetrain(E-D/T), usually referred as electric motor for driving, its compatible reduction gear, and inverter, are performed for developing electric vehicle(EV) with efficient driving performance. Universal mode of driving cycle has been used to make up the actual vehicle performance, and its results are incorporated to the design of E-D/T.
This paper discusses the energy consumption for a mid-size electric vehicle(EV) under various conditions. In order to analyze which driving style is more efficient in terms of the system of the EV, we develop the electric vehicle model and apply several types of speed profiles such as different steady speeds, acceleration/deceleration, and a real world driving cycle including the elevation profile obtained from a GPS device. The results show that the energy consumption of the EV is affected by the operating efficiency of components when driving at low speed, while it depends on required power at wheels when driving at high speed. Also this paper investigates the effect of the elevation of a road and the rate of electrical braking on the energy consumption as well as the fuel economy of a conventional vehicle model under the same conditions.
The purpose of this study is to evaluate energy savings for inverter driving multi-stage centrifugal pump. Variable speed driving pump system has high efficiency compared with constant speed driving pump system. Because of difficulty to estimate operating efficiency of variable speed driving pump system, energy saving rates are used to replace operating efficiency. energy saving rates are calculated from pump input power and pump duty cycle. But another researches have used pump duty cycles of each season for energy saving rate. In this study, for estimating energy saving rate more high accuracy, pump duty cycles are measured for 1 year. pump duty cycles, depending on the season and be classified according to the weekday/weekend or during the week day. By this pump duty cycles, Energy saving rate is calculated appropriately.
There are lots of studies about hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) because of the global warming and energy problems. Series and parallel HEVs are the common types of many developing hybrid vehicle types. Series HEV uses engine only as the generator for the battery but parallel HEV utilizes engine for driving and generating of the vehicle. In this paper, backward simulations based on dynamic programming were conducted for the fuel economy analysis of two different types of hybrid transit buses depending on driving cycles. It is shown that there is a relation between the type of HEV and the characteristics of driving cycles. Regarding the aggressiveness, the series hybrid bus is more efficient than the parallel system on highly aggressive driving cycle. On the other hand, the parallel hybrid bus is more efficient than the series system on low aggressive driving cycle. Based on this results of the paper, it is expected to choose more efficient type of the hybrid buses according to the driving cycle.
