Objectives It is well known that problem drinking is associated with alterations of brain structures and functions. Brain functions related to alcohol consumption can be determined by the resting state functional connectivity in various resting state networks (RSNs). This study aims to ascertain the alcohol effect on the structures forming predetermined RSNs by assessing their cortical thickness. Methods Twenty-six abstinent male patients with alcohol dependence and the same number of age-matched healthy control were recruited from an inpatient mental hospital and community. All participants underwent a 3T MRI scan. Averaged cortical thickness of areas constituting 7 RSNs were determined by using FreeSurfer with Yeo atlas derived from cortical parcellation estimated by intrinsic functional connectivity. Results There were significant group differences of mean cortical thicknesses (Cohen's d, corrected p) in ventral attention (1.01, < 0.01), dorsal attention (0.93, 0.01), somatomotor (0.90, 0.01), and visual (0.88, 0.02) networks. We could not find significant group differences in the default mode network. There were also significant group differences of gray matter volumes corrected by head size across the all networks. However, there were no group differences of surface area in each network. Conclusions There are differences in degree and pattern of structural recovery after abstinence across areas forming RSNs. Considering the previous observation that group differences of functional connectivity were significant only in networks related to task-positive networks such as dorsal attention and cognitive control networks, we can explain recovery pattern of cognition and emotion related to the default mode network and the mechanisms for craving and relapse associated with task-positive networks.

Proteomics is a useful approach to know protein expression, post-translational modification and protein function. We investigated the protein expression pattern and identity in chickens fed with the tissue culture medium waste after harvest of Korean wild ginseng (TCM-KWG) (Panax ginseng). Two groups (n=60/group) of day old broiler chickens were administered with 0 (control) and 0.8% (treatment) TCM-KWG through drinking water. After 5 weeks, we examined the protein expression pattern of fibularis longus and superficial pectoral muscle by Two-dimensional electrophoresis analysis. Interestingly, TCM-KWG treatment significantly increased five spot's density, and markedly reduced five spot's density in the muscles. We identified 10 proteins (desmin, myosin light chain 1, heat shock 25 kDa protein, collapsin response mediator protein-2A, alpha enolase, vimentin, actin alpha 1, my023 protein, pyruvate kinase and troponin T) by the matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time of flight (MALDI-TOF).

Purpose of this study was to investigate correlation between blood pressure (systolic and diastolic) and dietary sodium, potassium intake pattern in the family members of normal cerebrovascular (CVA) disease, excluding patients themselves. Both mean values of systolic (125.8$\pm$23.7 vs 119.3$\pm$19.2mmHg) and diastolic(76.1$\pm$16.7 vs 71.6$\pm$12.5mmHg) bllood pressure in the family members of cerebrovascular disease patients were significantly higher than those of normal subjects. Systolic blood pressure was positively correlated with age, weibght, sodium in soybean paste, potassium in hotpepepr paste, soybean paste and meats in normal subjects group. In the family members of cerebrovascular patient, systolic blood pressure was possively correlated with age, weight, sodium in soy sauce, drinking water and potassium in soups. Interestingly, table salt intake was positively correlated with systosolic blood pressure in the family members of cerebrovascular disease patients. Diastolic bolld pressure was positively correlated with age, weight, table salt intake potassium in hotpepper paste and soybean paste in normal subjects group. Diastolic blood pressure was positively correlated with age, weight and table salt intake in the family members of cerebrovascular disease patients. Urinary potassium excretion was negatively correlated with both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in the family members of cerebrovascular disease patients.
Microorganisms detected in the biofilm not only cause secondary pollution of drinking water such as taste, odor and pathogenic disease but also increase the amount of disinfectant due to microbial regrowth during the transportation of tap water. In this work, the influence of C/N ratio in tap water on the characteristics of biofilm growth was examined. The C/N ratio of the tap water sample was controlled at 100:5, 100:10, 100:20, 100:30, and 100:40 by adding appropriate amounts of dextrose and $(NH_4)_2SO_4$. Of the five C/N ratios, heterotrophic plate counts (HPC) was highest at the ratio of 100:10. Following the initial formation in all the five experimental conditions, natural detachment of the biofilm was observed. Extracellular enzyme activity (EEA) analyses showed that the change of the EEA during the experimental period was similar to that of the HPC, demonstrating a positive correlation between HPC and EEA. For TOC concentration in the tap water sample, approximately 75% of the TOC was consumed in 7 days of the experiment and 96% in 28 days. The TOC appeared to be relatively rapidly consumed at the initial phase of the biofilm growth. Consumption pattern of the ammonia nitrogen was different from the TOC consumption pattern showing the different role of ammonia nitrogen on the growth of biofilm.
Algal blooms have caused problems for drinking water as well as eutrophication. However it is difficult to control algal blooms by current warning manual in rainy season because the algal blooms happen in a few days. The water quality data, which have high correlations with Chlorophyll-a on Daecheongho station, were analyzed and chosen as input data of Artificial Neural Networks (ANN) for training pattern changes. ANN was applied to early forecasting of algal blooms, and ANN was assessed by forecasting errors. Water temperature, pH and Dissolved oxygen were important factors in the cross correlation analysis. Some water quality items like Total phosphorus and Total nitrogen showed similar pattern to the Chlorophyll-a changes with time lag. ANN model (No. 3), which was calibrated by water temperature, pH and DO data, showed lowest error. The combination of 1 day, 3 days, 7 days forecasting makes outputs more stable. When automatic monitoring data were used for algal bloom forecasting in Daecheong reservoir, ANN model must be trained by just input data which have high correlation with Chlorophyll-a concentration. Modular type model, which is combined with the output of each model, can be effectively used for stable forecasting.

The formation pattern of DBPs (disinfection by-products) in raw water treated with hypochlorite, chlorine disinfectant was studied. TOC (total organic carbon), residual chlorine, turbidity and 14 DBPs in raw water from Han-river and Nakdong river during 1 ~ 14 days were determined. Total DBPs in Han river was 101.3 ng/mL (789.6 nM) after 7days and THMs (trihalomethanes) are the dominant portion of 68%. HAAs (haloacetic acids) and chloral hydrate were determined 19% and 10% respectively. In Nakdong river total DBPs was 98.4 ng/mL (678.6 nM) and dominant class was HAAs. (55.8 ng/mL, 57%) THMs(34%) and N-compounds like HANs (haloacetonitriles, 5%) and chloropicrin were increased. It may be explained that high concentration of NH4-N in Nakdong river react with chlorine produced chloramine and this formed different pattern of DBPs. As a result, total DBPs formation pattern depends on raw water and disinfectant and in generally the initial concentration of acidic HAAs was high and THMs was increased gradually.

Objectives Impaired lung function(ILF) and sasang constitution(SC) is associated with metabolic syndrome(MS). However, the relationship between ILF and SC is unclear. So, we assessed the relationship between ILF and MS according to SC, and examined whether SC is an independent risk factor for ILF. Methods This study included 1,148 subjects 40years and older who were performed the health examination at Kyung Hee University Hospital in Korea between December 2011 and February 2013. We defined ILF if FVC or $FEV_1$ value were less than lower limit of normal(LLN), and classified ventilatory patterns as obstructive pattern and restrictive pattern. MS was assessed according to AHA/NHLBI criteria. We used multivariate logistic regression to analyze the association of ILF with MS respective to SC types, and to identify the risk of SC types for ILF. Odds ratio(OR) was calculated by adjusting for age, sex, smoking status, drinking, physical activity, and BMI. Results In whole subjects, ILF was associated with MS [OR (95% CI), 1.69 (1.24-2.31) for FVC, 1.67 (1.20-2.33) for $FEV_1$]. And in Taeeum type(TE type) and Soeum type(SE type), ILF was associated with MS [1.63 (1.10-2.42) for FVC, 1.48 (1.01-2.24) for $FEV_1$ in TE type; 6.93 (1.14-42.00) for FVC in SE type], while in Soyang type(SY type), it wasn't. The restrictive pattern was associated with MS in TE type and SE type, while in SY type, it wasn't. Furthermore, TE type and SY type had more risk for ILF than SE type [1.71 (1.12-2.59) for SY type, 1.95 (1.23-3.08) for TE type in FVC; 2.06 (1.26-3.36) for TE type in $FEV_1$; 1.85 (1.21-2.85) for SY type, 2.17 (1.35-3.49) for TE type in Restrictive pattern]. Conclusions These results show that SC is an independent risk factor for ILF, especially TE type and SY type than SE type, and the prevalence of MS is an independent risk factor for ILF in TE type.

Environmental design pattern of the nine Small Urban Spaces at C.B.D. in City of Seoul are surveyed and analyzed for user's satisfaction and behavior under the environmental design evaluation by using Christopher Alexander's Pattern Language. Small Urban Spaces as a part of streetscape are formed by physical factors as well as visual environment and interacting user's behavior. Therefore, user's satisfaction and behavior at the nine Urban Small Spaces were investigated under the further search for some possibilities of application of those Pattern Languages. A pattern language has a structure of a network. It is used in sequence, going through the patterns, moving always from large patterns to smaller, always from the ones which create comes simply from the observation that most of the wonderful places of the city were not blade by architects but by the people. It defines the limited number of arrangements of spaces that make sense in any given culture. And it actually gives us the power to generate these coherent arrangement of space. As a results, 'Plaza', 'Seats'and 'Aecessibility' related design Patterns are highly evaluated by Pattern Frequency, Pattern Interaction and their Composition ranks, thus reconfirm Whyte's Praise of urban Small Spaces in our inner city design environments. According to the multiple regression analysis of user's evaluation, the environmental functions related to the satisfaction were 'Plaza', 'Accessibility' and 'Paving'. According to the free response, user's prefer such visually pleasing environmental design object as 'Waterscape' and 'Setting'. In addition to, the basic needs in Urban Small Spaces are amenity facilities as bench, drinking water and shade for rest.
Granular media filtration is used almost universally as the last particle removal process in conventional water treatment plants. Therefore, superb particle removal efficiency is needed during this process to ensure a high quality of drinking water. However, every particle can not be removed during granular media filtration. Besides the pattern of particle attachment is different depending on physicochemical aspects of particles and suspension. Filtration experiments were performed in a laboratory-scale filter using spherical glass beads with a diameter of 0.55 mm as collectors. A single type of particle suspension (Min-U-Sil 5) and pH control was used to destabilize particles. The operating conditions were similar to those of standard media filtration practice: a filtration velocity of 5 m/h. More favorable particles, i.e., particles with smaller surface charge, were well attached to the collectors especially during the early stage of filtration. This selective attachment of the lower charged particles caused the zeta potential distribution (ZPD) of the effluent to move to a more negative range. On the other hand, the ZPD of the effluent did not keep moving from less negative to more negative during the later stages of filtration, and this result was thought to be caused by two reasons: ripening effects and the detachment of flocs.
Throughout the analysis of field data from water distribution system, valid parameters were determined that can be included in the water service and design plan. This study investigates water consumption patterns to understand the variation of water-demand structures utilizing the pattern analysis of domestic purpose water. Water use data were collected by a public water resources management firm in Korea, Kwater, for 140 houses monitored during three years. Flow meters were installed at the faucet for drinking water, the shower booth, the laundry machine, bathroom sink, toilet, and garden faucet. Data was filtered using multiple physically meaningful criteria to improve analysis credibility. Mann Kendall and Spearman's Rho tests were used to carry out the analysis. Distinct factors of water consumption patterns can be determined for both increasing and decreasing trends of water use. Throughout the data analysis, the characterization of terms was classified and analyzed by the condition of the location of water-demand. Analysis of this data provide a physical basis for the parameter configuration of a reasonable design for a domestic water demand prediction model.
