Drilling process is one of the most common, yet complex operations among manufacturing processes. The performance of a drill is largely dependent upon drilling forces. Many researches focused on the effects of drill parameters on drilling forces. In this paper, the stresses occurring in drilling process are analyzed by finite element method. The analytic drilling forces considering the drill parameters and drilling conditions are used. Also, with ANSYS, geometric modeling and mesh generation of drill is performed automatically. From the study, optimal drill design and drilling condition determination may be achieved.
Drilling process is usually the most efficient and economical method of making a hole in a solid body. However, there have been no analytical method to assess drilling process based on the shear and frictional characteristics. In this paper, procedures for analyzing shear and frictional processes of drilling have been established by adopting an equivalent turning system to drilling. A series of drilling experiments were carried out with varying feed, velocity and drill shape factors. Using the results of the experiments, the cutting characteristics including shear in the primary shear zone and friction in the chip-tool contact region of drilling process have been analyzed. The specific cutting energy tends to decrease exponentially with increase of feed rate. In drilling process 35-40% of the total energy is consumed in the friction process. This is greater than that of turning process in cutting of the same work material.
Applications of the deep hole drilling process can be found in many industries ranging from large aerospace manufacturer to small tool and die shop. Deep hole drilling process with small diameter generally requires high quality and accuracy. But problems which may arise or result from the deep hole drilling process include drill breakage, the generation of a finished part surface which does not satisfy required quality, and process instability. To guaranty the required machining quality and accuracy, it is important to understand and improve the deep hole drilling process. In this study, deep hole drilling experiments using tingle edge drill with small diameter under 2mm have been carried out for difficult to cut materials such as C42CrMo4 and C45pb and the experimental results were analyzed. Feed force and torque versus feed showed linear relationship in both materials. The feed force and torque are decreased as cutting speed is increased but the trends are not uniform in C42CrMo4.
Diamond core drills are applied to drill difficult-to-cut materials. This paper proposes basic understanding of ceramic drilling mechanics and characteristics of main factors affecting tool life, tool wear, cutting force, and chipping thickness. In contrast to conventional drilling, the core drilling process make deep grooves on the workpiece. One difficulty of it is the evacuation of chips from the drilled groove. As the drilling depth increases, an increased amount of chips tend to cluster together and clog the groove. Eventually severe wear develops and diamond grits are separated from the drill body. To relieve the clogging problem and to evacuate chips from the groove easily, the helical drilling process is applied for the core drilling process. To analyze drilling characteristics and derive optimal drilling conditions, tool life, tool wear, cutting force, and chipping thickness are quantified through the monitoring system and the Taguchi method. Mathematical models for the tool life and chipping thickness are derived from the response surface method. Optimal drilling database has been constructed through the experimental models.
In-process detection of drill wear is one of the most important technoligies for automatic, unmaned machining systems. In this study, an on-line drill wear estimation model based on spindle/Z-axis motor currents generated during the drilling process is proposed. The theoretical model is obtained by integrating the drilling process model and the servomechanism model. The drilling process model describes the relationship of drill wear and drilling torque/ thrust force, whereas the servomechanism model describes the relationship of drilling torque/ thrust force applied to motor and spindle/Z-axis motor current. Evaluation tests have shown that the proposed model is a good real-time estimator for drill wear.
These days, most of new materials, which is in use widely as cutting process materials have a characteristic in common. That is hard cutting. So, it happens that hardness by cutting temperature. And hardness on cutting process has an effect on tool wear or life shortness of tools. To solve these problems hot-machining is proposed. When a material is heated, organization of material is soften. So cutting process becomes easy. When such a hot-machining method applies on drilling process and then heated material is processed, cutting force is less than usual drilling process cutting force. In this paper, when a material is heated, cutting force on drilling process is measured. It is decided that the best suitable temperature area. And it suggest that the better hot-machining condition as surface accuracy is measured.
Among the non-traditional machining methods, Abrasive waterjet machining process shows big promise in drilling difficult-to-machine materials due to its numerous advantages such as absence of heat affect zone and thermal distortion. Acoustic emission signal technique is used to understand about material removal mechanisms during abrasive waterjet drilling process. More information about the drilling process is derived through frequency decomposition of auto regressive moving average modeling representing acoustic emission signals.
The identification of drilling joint dynamics which consists of drilling and structural dynamics and the on-line time series detection of malfunction process is substantial not only for the investigation of the static and dynamic characteristics but also for the analytic realization of diagnostic and control systems in drilling. Therefore, We have discussed on the comparative assessment of two recursive time series modeling algorithms that can represent the drilling operation and detect the abnormal geometric behaviors in precision roundshape machining such as turning, drilling and boring in precision diemaking. For this purpose, simulation and experimental work were performed to show the malfunctional behaviors for drilling operation. For this purpose, a new two recursive approach (Recursive Extended Instrument Variable Method : REIVM, Recursive Least Square Method : RLSM) may be adopted for the on-line system identification and monitoring of a malfunction behavior of drilling process, such as chipping, wear, chatter and hole lobe waviness.
The thermal analysis method containing micro drilling characteristic is proposed for the first time. There are such problems in thermal analysis of micro hole drilling as the thermal modeling complexity of drilling process and the undesirable micro drilling characteristic. Especially, the undesirable micro drilling characteristic prevents our using conventional thermal modeling. To model the thermal behavior of the micro drilling process, the finite different method, where heat source vectors are distributed by the measured rhrust and torque, is proposed. This method agrees with thermal behavior of the real system. And, it enable to predict the temperature field near the drill during. The validity of this method is verified in comparing with experimental results.
In recent years, CFRP composite materials have been increasingly used in various fields of engineering because of a high specific strength and stiffness properties. Drilling is one of the most impo rtant cutting processes that are generally carried out on CFRP materials owing to the need for the structural integration. However, delamination are often occurred as one of the drilling damages. Therefore, there are needs studying for the relationships between CFRP drilling and delamination in order to avoid low strength of the structures and inaccuracies of the integration. In this study, AE signals and thrust forces were used for the evaluations of the delamination from a drilling process in [0/900]s CFRP materials. And the drilling damage processes were observed and measured by a real time monitoring technique with a video camera. From the results, we found that the relationships between the delamination from drilling and AE characteristics and drill thrust forces for [0/900]s CFRP composites. Also, we proposed the monitoring method for a visual analysis of drilling damages.
