  • Due to corrosion defects on the surface of the oil pipe, the sealing performance of the annular blowout preventer (BOP) decreases, and the leakage of toxic and harmful gases such as H2S and SO2 will threaten the safety of operators on the well. Therefore, this paper establishes the FE model for evaluating the sealing performance of BOP-oil pipe corrosion defects, which is based on the rubber large deformation theory and rubber core sealing mechanism, and designs the experiment of BOP sealing performance to verify the accuracy of the FE model. The sealing performance of BOP sealing oil pipe with corrosion defects is studied. The research results show that the sealing performance of BOP is more sensitive to the axial size of corrosion defects. With the increase of oil pipe outer diameter, the critical size of defects increases continuously. The sensitivity of radial and depth dimensions is low, When for 88.9 mm outer diameter oil pipe, the axial critical size of corrosion defect is 20 mm, the radial critical size is 16 mm and the critical depth is 2 mm. Fit the formula between the outer diameter of oil pipe and the piston increment. According to the formula, the operator can calculate the piston stroke increment required by the BOP to complete the sealing when the oil pipe is corroded.

  • This study analyzes machining characteristics and presents optimal cutting conditions by measuring the surface roughness, dimensional accuracy, and dimension straightness based on the feed rate after processing the inner diameter hall of SCM415 steel using an automatic CNC(Computerized Numerical Control) lathe. The testing material was cut using an 11.8 mm-diameter Chamdrill after mounting the 32 mm-diameter round bar on an automatic CNC lathe. The cut depth was set at 3 mm, and the cutting speed was fixed at 1500 rpm. The surface roughness, dimensional accuracy, and dimension straightness of 15 testings were measured by changing the feed rate to 0.05, 0.1, and 0.15 mm/rev, respectively. It was difficult to process more than 15 tests during the maching due to noise or break. Additionally, the optimum cutting of SCM415 steel showed excellent surface roughness in the 10th and 11th of testing at cutting speed and feed speed of 1500 rpm and 0.05 mm/rev, respectively. The dimensional accuracy was measured in three dimensions after drilling, which showed good results with an average range of 0.0138-0.0208 mm. Moreover, the lower the feed speed, the higher the accuracy. Additionally, the measurement results of the dimensional straightness showed that the straightness is the straightness was the best at the 1th and 2th cutting regardless of the feed speed.

  • In the earlier application of the spline finite strip method(FSM), the uniform B3-spline functions were used in the longitudinal direction while the conventional interpolation functions were used in the transverse direction to construct the displacement filed in a strip. To overcome the shortcoming of the uniform B3-spline, non-periodic B-spline was developed as the displacement function. The use of non-periodic B3-spline function requires no tangential vectors at both ends to interpolate the geometry of shell and the Kronecker delta property is also satisfied at the end boundaries. Recently, non-periodic spline FSM which was modified to have a multiple knots at the boundary was developed for the shell analysis and applied to the analysis of bridges. In the formulation of a non-symmetric spline finite strip method, the concepts of non-periodic B3-spline and a stress-resultant finite strip with drilling degrees of freedom for a shell are used. The introduction of non-symmetrically spaced knots in the longitudinal direction allows the selective local refinement to improve the accuracy of solution at the connections or at the location of concentrated load. A number of numerical tests were performed to prove the accuracy and efficiency of the present study.

  • To develop a coalbed methane(CBM) reservoir, it is important to apply production methods such as drilling, completion, and stimulation which coincide with coal properties. However, the reliability of the selected resulted in most of CBM field is not enough to accept because the selection of production method has been done by empirical decision. As the result, the empirical decision show inaccurate results and need to prove using simulation whether it was true exactly. In this study, the intelligent system has been developed to assist the selection of CBM production method using artificial neural network(ANN). Before the development of the system, technical screening guideline was analyzed by literature survey and the system to select drilling and completion method, and hydraulic fracture fluid was developed by utilizing the guideline. The result as a validation of the developed system showed a high accuracy. In conclusion, it has been confirmed that the developed system can be utilized as a effective tool to select production method in CBM reservoir.

  • It is important to devise methods for assisting dentists to consistently determine implant positions and directions and to accurately perform drilling tasks during dental implant surgery. In this paper, we propose a novel approach to tooth implant placement planning which deals with the determination of the positions and directions of multiple implant fixtures for a set of missing mandibular teeth and suggests the selection of the sizes and types of the implant fixtures. We combine Korean standard data in the sizes and positions of human teeth with the patient specific 3D models of mandibular jawbones, nerve curves, and neighboring teeth around the missing teeth in order to determine the positions and directions of the implant fixtures for the missing teeth. Using the geometric and spatial information of the jawbones, the teeth and the implant fixtures, we can construct the 3D models of surgical guide stents which are crucial to perform drilling tasks with ease and accuracy. Adopted in 3D simulation of dental implant placement, the approach can provide surgeon students with good educational contents. We also expect that, with further work, the approach can be used as a useful tool to plan for dental implant surgery.

  • The rock anchorage of a suspension bridge is an outstanding anchorage type from environmental and economical perspective, although it should be applied when the bearing foundation is fresh enough to resist large cable loads. In practice, geotechnical engineers have encountered difficulties in designing the anchorage structure due to the fact that the physical behaviors of rocks against cable loads have not yet been fully proved and its design method was not established yet. In this study, model tests and numerical studies were performed to evaluate the behavior of the rock anchorage system planned under hard rock layers in domestic islands, and results suggest that the shape of asymmetric rock wedges can resist the tension loads with self weight and shear resistance. Additionally, real scale trial tests were carried out to verify the accuracy of an inclined drilling penetrating hard rock layers to install tendon to the bearing plate.

  • An assumed strain finite strip method(FSM) using the non-periodic B-spline for a shell is presented. In the present method, the shape function based on the non-periodic B-splines satisfies the Kronecker delta properties at the boundaries and allows to introduce interior supports in much the same way as in a conventional finite element formulation. In the formulation for a shell, the geometry of the shell is defined by non-periodic B3-splines without any tangential vectors at the ends and the penalty function method is used to incorporate the drilling degrees of freedom. In this study, new assumed strain fields using the non-periodic B-spline function are proposed to overcome the locking problems. The strip formulated in this way does not posses any spurious zero energy modes. The versatility and accuracy of the new approach are demonstrated through a series of numerical examples.

  • The utility of soil-gas surveys is directly proportional to their accuracy in reflecting and representing changes in the subsurface concentrations of source compounds. Passive soil-gas vapor-phase is merely a fractional trace of the source, so, as a matter of convenience, the units used in reporting detection values from EMFLUX surveys are smaller than those employed for source-compound concentrations. According to the Leaking Underground Storage Tank(LUST) Program Annual Report, approximately 16 U.S. million dollars were spent for environmental site investigations at over 1,600 Underground Storage Tank(UST) sites and approximately over 1,000 acres of land was characterized and remediated in the State of Illinois in the year of 2003 alone. The main purpose of this study is to propose an idea to significantly reduce the site investigation cost by utilizing a passive soil-gas survey and conventional intrusive drilling method and to fully define the three dimensional characteristics of subsurface contamination from two industrial drycleaning facilities.

  • Conventional Korean tunnel portals require a lot of overburden as, fer static reasons, about 1.5 to 2.0 times the tunnel diameter is needed for the height in order to achieve a sufficient arching effect. Thus, considerable movement of earth and support constructions are required which lead to undesirably large changes of and damage to the environment. With a massively designed pipe roof, tunnels with little overburden can be built. For the effective construction of a pipe roof as an advancing safeguarding method, the following properties are indispensable: stability, insensitivity to settling and drilling accuracy. With the AT casing system a new pipe roof method has been developed which on the one hand entirely combines the properties mentioned last, and which on the other hand permits safe, economical and environmentally friendly construction of tunnels at low overburden heights of 3 to 6 m.
