  • In this paper, drill fred mechanism, cutting depth measuring device and sensing buzzer of drill contact were investigated in order to develop the micro-hole drilling machine. Also, measuring device of cutting resistance was developed in order to estimate cutting resistance from change of cutting condition. The results show that extremely-low fled rate(less then $17{\mu}m/S$${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ /s) can be done and cutting depth can be measured by up to 1${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ with developed drilling machine. Accordingly we could assemble a very cheap micro-hole drilling machine($\phi$ 0.05~0.5 mm). Also we got the some properties of cutting performance i.e. under the same condition, cutting torque decreases as increase of spindle speed and rapid fled of drill brings about the inferior cutting state under low spindle speed.

  • On this study, technical aspects were reviewed to drill a series of micro holes (${\phi}$0.10) over 200 within a few micron tolerance in diameter and position on the stainless steel material. Dedicated tools & jigs were designed and manufactured and optimum cutting conditions were found. On this micro hole drilling process, guide drill and step feeding were applied to help chip discharge, prevent drill breakage and finally improve the accuracy of positioning and roundness. The processing results indicated that most holes are distributed within a few micron tolerance in diameter and position intervals.

  • The effects of guide pads on burnishing action and accuracy of machined hole are investigated in drilling with burnishing drill using a speciaaly designed tool experimentally. The cutting forces are balanced at the small forward regions of guide pads. The burnishing action takes place under a high contact pressure between the bore wall and those regions. The over size mechanism of machined hole by the guide pads is discussed.

  • The rationalization for Tunnel Drifting is based on the high productivity which is achievable due to Continuous work with a Jumbo Drill, resulting in a much higher efficiency them the Conventional method of blasting, mucking and supporting services. Large projects of over 4,000m Tunnel Drifting are condidated to justify the use of a Jumbo Drill with a combination of superior explosives, machinery and techniques. During a Tunnel Drifting test, Gulita, Nabit and slurry made by Nitro Nobel were employed with following results. 1, Conditions: a. Granite Rock with Two free face b. Burden (W), 2m c. Diameter of hole, 42mm d. Depth of hole 3.5m e. Hole pitch 0.6m f. Charged Explosive per hole Gelatin Dynamite 4 pieces (112.5${\times}$4ea)+Guuita 5 pieces(110g${\times}$5ea) g. Simal-taneous Detonation h. After the blasting resultant rock size was Less 40% of the 0.3m Lumps. 2. Calculation results W=q/Wn=100cm‥‥‥Burden in simultaneous blasting 0.865kg(7.7ea)/hole ‥‥‥Amount of charge but hole pitch is 1.5W-2W The estimated cost of using a Jumbo Drill for the Construction of a 3,000,000 bbL sub-surface oil storage would be as follows: This calculation is based on the Jumbo Drill advancing 3.6m per blasting cycle. Unit cost/bbL Excavation $3.13 The attached sheet shows ideal Drilling pattern with Burn Cut & Smooth blasting method. In conclusion, it is my opinion that this method will assure safety and save cost and improve our technical know-how.

  • Recently CFRP laminate joints process by bolts and nets are developed rapidly in aircraft industries. However, there are serious drawback during jointing process. Many hole processes are needed for the manufacturing and structural applications using composite materials. Generally, very durable polycrystalline crystalline diamond (PCD) drill has been used for the CFRP hole process. However, due to the expensive price and slow process speed, chemical vapor deposition (CVD) diamond drill has been used increasingly which are relatively-low durability but easily-adjustable process speed via drill shape change and price is much lower. In this study, the comparison of hole process between PCD and CVD diamond coated drills was done. First of all, CFRP hole processbility was evaluated using the equations of hole processing conditions (feed amount per blade, feed speed). The comparison on thermal damage occurring from the CFRP specimen was also studied during drilling process. Empirical equation was made from the temperature photo profile being taken during hole process by infrared thermal camera. In addition, hole processability was compared by checking hole inside condition upon chip exhausting state for two drills. Generally, although the PCD can exhibit better hole processability, hole processing speed of CVD diamond drill exhibited faster than PCD case.

  • This study proposes an advanced type of a micropile system. The proposed micropile system consists of perfobond ribs installed steel rod to improve shear capacity between the thread and the grout, and partially expanded drill holes to increase resistance capacity between the grout and the ground. This study contains experimental evaluations on the proposed micropile system to verify the shear capacity of perfobond rib installed on the steel rod and the load-carrying capacity of shear key created by the partially expanded drill hole. Push-out tests were conducted on a rolled screw thread and steel rods which perfobond ribs are installed instead of rolled screw, in order to compare their load-carrying capacity and behavioral characteristics. As a result, it was confirmed that the perfobond-rib steel rods show much superior structural behavior in terms of initial stiffness, ultimate load, and ductile behavior.

  • Out of all metal-cutting processes, the hole-making process is the most widely used. It is estimated to be more than 30% of the total metal-cutting process. It is therefore desirable to monitor and detect drill wear during the hole-drilling process. One important aspect in controlling the drilling process is monitoring drill wear status. Accordingly, this paper deals with Basic system and Online system. Basic system comprised of spindle rotational speed, feed rates, thrust, torque and flank wear measured tool microscope. Online system comprised of spindle rotational speed, feed rates, AE signal, flank wear area measured computer vision. On-line monitoring system does not need to stop the process to inspect drill wear. Backpropagation neural networks (BPNs) were used for on-line detection of drill wear. This paper deals with an on-line drill wear monitoring system to fit the detection of the abnormal tool state.

  • An experimental study was carried out to study the solid-liquid mixture upward flow in a vertical and inclined annulus with rotating inner cylinder. Lift forces acting on a fluidized particle plays a central role in many importance applications, such as the removal of drill cuttings in horizontal drill holes, sand transport in fractured reservoirs, sediment transport and cleaning of particles from surfaces, etc. Field measurements have revealed that the pressure drop over a borehole during drilling of a slim oil well or a well with a long reach can depend significantly on the rotation speed of the drill pipe. An accurate prediction of the annular frictional pressure drop is therefore important for conditions where the annular clearance is small. Effect of annulus inclination and drill pipe rotation on the carrying capacity of drilling fluid, particle rising velocity, and pressure drop in the slim hole annulus have been measured for fully developed flows of water and of aqueous solutions.

  • Drilling is one of the most important operations in machining industry and usually the most efficient and economical method of cutting a hole in metal. From automobile parts to aircraft components, almost every manufactured product requires that holes are to be drilled for the purpose of assembly, creation of fluid passages, and so on. It is therefore desirable to monitor drill wear and hole quality changes during the hole drilling process. One important aspect in controlling the drilling process is drill wear status monitoring. With the monitoring, we may decide on optimal timing for tool change. The necessity of the detection of tool wear, fracture and the abnormal tool state has been emphasized in the machining process. Accordingly, this paper deals with the cutting characteristics of the hot-rolled high strength steels using common HSS drill. The performance variables include drill wear data obtained from drilling experiments conducted on the workpiece. The results are obtained from monitoring of the cutting force and Acoustic Emission (AE) signals, and from the detection of the abnormal tool state with the computer vision system.
