  • This work was to study the potential health food use of germinated colored rice after germinating and drying using microwave under vacuum. Colored rice was soaked in water at $15^{\circ}C$ for 2 days and then germinated at $25^{\circ}C$ for $3{\sim}4\;days$. The germinated colored rice was dried by different drying methods: microwave vacuum drying 1, microwave vacuum drying $2\;(drying{\rightarrow}crushing{\rightarrow}drying)$, hot air drying, vacuum drying and freeze drying. Each drier except freeze drier was set to maintain the sample temperature at $60^{\circ}C$. During microwave vacuum drying 1 or 2, the sample reached $60^{\circ}C$ much faster (within 5 min) and was dried much faster ($2{\sim}3\;hrs$ than the other drying methods. The initial drying rate of microwave vacuum drying was ten times faster than that of hot air drying. The microwave vacuum drying 2 retained the highest ${\alpha}-amylase$ activity, followed by microwave vacuum drying 1, freeze drying, vacuum drying, and hot air drying.

  • The climate of the last glacial maximum (LGM) in northeast Asia is simulated with an atmospheric general circulation model of NCAR CCM3 at spectral truncation of T170, corresponding to a grid cell size of roughly 75 km. Modern climate is simulated by a prescribed sea surface temperature and sea ice provided from NCAR, and contemporary atmospheric CO2, topography, and orbital parameters, while LGM simulation was forced with the reconstructed CLIMAP sea surface temperatures, sea ice distribution, ice sheet topography, reduced $CO_2$, and orbital parameters. Under LGM conditions, surface temperature is markedly reduced in winter by more than $18^{\circ}C$ in the Korean west sea and continental margin of the Korean east sea, where the ocean exposed to land in the LGM, whereas in these areas surface temperature is warmer than present in summer by up to $2^{\circ}C$. This is due to the difference in heat capacity between ocean and land. Overall, in the LGM surface is cooled by $4{\sim}6^{\circ}C$ in northeast Asia land and by $7.1^{\circ}C$ in the entire area. An analysis of surface heat fluxes show that the surface cooling is due to the increase in outgoing longwave radiation associated with the reduced $CO_2$ concentration. The reduction in surface temperature leads to a weakening of the hydrological cycle. In winter, precipitation decreases largely in the southeastern part of Asia by about $1{\sim}4\;mm/day$, while in summer a larger reduction is found over China. Overall, annual-mean precipitation decreases by about 50% in the LGM. In northeast Asia, evaporation is also overall reduced in the LGM, but the reduction of precipitation is larger, eventually leading to a drier climate. The drier LGM climate simulated in this study is consistent with proxy evidence compiled in other areas. Overall, the high-resolution model captures the climate features reasonably well under global domain.

  • The required energy for the heat treatment of pine log was evaluated in this study. A proper heat treatment of pine log infected by pinewood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus) can prevent spreading of the infection by pinewood nematode and make the infected pinewood valuable again. The FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) heat treatment standard for various types of infected wood for which a heat treatment of the core part of the wood is necessary is 30 minutes at $56^{\circ}C$, taking into account the international standards for phytosanitary measures (ISPM No. 15). In this study, the energy consumption during the heat treatment was separated into two kinds of energy, initial energy for heating kiln drier and to reach set point temperature and relative humidity and the required energy supplementing heat loss. The initial required energy per unit time is greater than that during the treatment. The energy consumption per unit time varied little during the heat treatment. As a result, the set point relative humidity with set dry bulb temperature and density of wood dependent on moisture content are very important factors to change energy consumption in the experiment. The heat treatment at higher temperature and higher humidity levels requires more energy consumption but less treatment time. It is expected that a more effective energy program could be planed for the heat treatment of pine log through this study.

  • This paper presents a paleoenvironmental study on Hoya San Nicolas, a maar lake in Valle de Santiago in Central Mexican Bajio. Maar lake sediments have been widely used for high-resolution reconstruction of paleoenvironment. Many different paleoenvironmental proxy data such as stable isotopes, pollen, and sediment chemistry were produced in this study. These data help to reveal paleoenviromental changes throughout the whole period covered by sediment materials from this study site. The evidence indicates that during ca. 11,000 - ca. 8,900 cal yr B.P. there was dry climate; during ca. 8,900 - ca. 7,000 cal yr B.P. it was wetter; during ca. 7,000 - ca. 4,000 cal yr B.P. drier; during ca. 4,000 cal yr B.P - the present wetter. Prominent dominance of Pinus pollen during ca. 11,000 - ca. 8,900 cal yr B.P. and during ca. 7,000 - ca. 4,000 cal yr B.P. may reflect very low lake levels resulting in poor preservation of pollen. Pinus pollen, the most resistant pollen type, may have been able to survive severe deterioration due to arid climate, but other pollen types may not. Due to likely droughts in these periods, a sedimentation gaps are probably present in the core.

  • The purpose of the present study was to develop and evaluate patient-customized helmets with a three-dimensional (3D) printer for radiation therapy of malignant scalp tumors. Computed tomography was performed in a case an Alderson RANDO phantom without bolus (Non_Bolus), in a case with a dental wax bolus on the scalp (Wax_Bolus), and in a case with a patient-customized helmet fabricated using a 3D printer (3D Printing_Bolus); treatment plans for each of the 3 cases were compared. When wax bolus was used to fabricate a bolus, a drier was used to apply heat to the bolus to make the helmet. $3-matic^{(R)}$ (Materialise) was used for modeling and polyamide 12 (PA-12) was used as a material, 3D Printing bolus was fabricated using a HP JET Fusion 3D 4200. The average Hounsfield Unit (HU) for the Wax_Bolus was -100, and that of the 3D Printing_Bolus was -10. The average radiation doses to the normal brain with the Non_Bolus, Wax_Bolus, and 3D Printing_Bolus methods were 36.3%, 40.2%, and 36.9%, and the minimum radiation dose were 0.9%, 1.6%, 1.4%, respectively. The organs at risk dose were not significantly difference. However, the 95% radiation doses into the planning target volume (PTV) were 61.85%, 94.53%, and 97.82%, and the minimum doses were 0%, 77.1%, and 82.8%, respectively. The technique used to fabricate patient-customized helmets with a 3D printer for radiation therapy of malignant scalp tumors is highly useful, and is expected to accurately deliver doses by reducing the air gap between the patient and bolus.

  • Anti-insect repellent silica sol from mixture with silica and anti-insect repellent solution extracted from medicinal herbs was prepared. The micron size porous sphere powder with anti-insect repellent solution was prepared by the spray drying method. The characteristic of anti-insect repellent powder using spray drying method was analyzed by FE-SEM, PSA, TGA with the concentration of anti-insect repellent sol (anti-insect repellent solution and silica) and conditions of spray drier. The average particle size of 4, 7 wt% and 10 wt% of anti-insect repellent sol concentration were 8.3, $9.5{\mu}m$ and $11.7{\mu}m$, respectively. The particle size is increasing with high concentration of anti-insect repellent sol. Other hands, particle size as the temperature of inlet nozzle and velocity of sol injection were nearly same at high velocity of gas injection. Also, Anti-insect repellent impregnation in porous sphere powder were confirmed by TGA methode and its thermal property was stable up to $200^{\circ}C$. We expect that anti-insect repellent powder is applied for plastic compound and process of film manufacture.

  • This study was carried out to survey basic information of swine farms on the machine holdings. facility type. management of manure by farm scale and operation, and then to develop the mechanization model. Manual feeding was common for sows and nursing sows. but automation feeding was normally furnished for weaners. growing pigs and castrated male pigs. Water supplies was completely automated for all of the surveyed swine farms. Fully mechanized and automated system would not be feasible and affordable for the small scale farms breeding less than 500 heads. Because the environmental control for the nursing sows and weaner was important, some swine houses were constructed with the windowless type. However, the furnished rates ranged from 22.2% to 44.4% of the surveyed nursing sow and weaner houses at the farm scales. In the future, a computerized ventilation system would be commended for the efficient use of heat energy and to maintain the desirable temperature of swine buildings. Over-investment for large scale farm and over-crowded pigpen of small farm would cause wasting construction expenses and spreading epidermic diseases Hence, the size of swine building should follow the recommended scale. The fermentation drier was recommended for the manure management. Urine could be recycled or discharged after treating by the activated sludge process.

  • Sensory and physical qualities and palatable compounds of cultured flounder muscle were compared with the wild ones. No differences were seen in the contents of the moisture, lipid, protein between cultured and wild dorsal muscles, however, sensory panels preferred the wild fish to cultured ones because of the texture and taste of wild fish, and they could differentiate the degree of difference in the texture and taste property distinctly. Raw meat of the wild fish was harder and more elastic than the cultured ones, however, the cultured meat was harder and drier than the wild ones once they were cooked. The results of physical properties were similar to the results of sensory evaluation. Alanine was the most abundant compound among the free amino acids which make meat palatable and followed by glutamic acid, proline, methionine, and glycine. There was no difference in total content of free amino acids between two fish muscles. ATP was the most abundant among all nucleotides and their related compounds in both fish muscles followed by IMP, ADP, AMP, however, the total content of those was greater in wild fish muscle (9.4 ${\mu}$mole/g) than in cultured fish muscle (6.7 ${\mu}$mole/g).

  • The effect of far-infrared (FIR) irradiation on the functional compounds of grape seeds extract were evaluated. Grape seed was dried on different heating power (0, 900, 1800 W) and heating time (0, 20, 40 min) with far-infrared drier. Contents of soluble solids, catechins, total phenolics and total flavonoids along with Hunter's color value, electron donating ability (EDA) and nitrite scavenging activity were analyzed. The soluble solids, Hunter's L value and a value were not significantly different from control samples. Cathechin, procyanidin $B_2$ and epicatechin contents changed with heating time. In the treated sample, total cathechins content was found maximum at 900 W of heating power and 20 min of heating time with a high level of total phenolics, total flavonids and EDA. These results indicated that FIR irradiation of grape seed could enhance antioxidant activities of its extracts by increasing the amounts of functional compounds. Moreover, response surface methodology(RSM) was applied to predict optimum conditions for heating by FIR rays of grape seeds. Based on superimposition of contour map with respect to total phenolics, total catechin and EDA, optimum ranges of heating conditions were heating power of 621.82~818.18 W and heating time of 16.3~19.83 min.

  • In order to elucidate residual characteristics of pesticides in garlic by drying, azoxystrobin and flutolanil used for garlic were treated to the garlic by dipping for 1 and 5 min into their standard diluents and then the garlic was dried with a freeze-drier. The test pesticides were analyzed with a GLC-ECD/NPD. Recoveries of the pesticides ranged from 81.96 to 98.18%. Amount of azoxystrobin and flutolanil in fresh garlic were 0.34 and 1.18 mg/kg in case of dipping for 1 min. and 0.44 and 2.15 mg/kg in case of dipping for 5 min., respectively. Also, amount of azoxystrobin and flutolanil in dried garlic were 0.80 and 4.51 mg/kg in case of dipping for 1 min. and 1.03, 5.28 mg/kg in case of dipping for 5 minute, respectively, representing that concentration of the test pesticides in garlic were increased by drying. In case of dipping for 1 and 5 min., processing factors of azoxystrobin were 2.35 and 3.34 and those of flutolanil were 1.19 and 1.17, respectively. Reduction factors of the pesticides in garlic were range from 0.94 to 0.97, indicating that few amounts of the test pesticides in garlic were dissipated by freeze-drying.
