To select adoptable varieties in paddy soil with relatively high content of soil moisture, the growth characteristics and ginsenoside content of two-year-old ginseng was investigated in paddy soil with two types of drainage conditions such as poorly and imperfectly drained class, using 4 varieties, Cheonpoong (CP), Yeonpoong (YP), Hwangsookjong (HS) Jakyeongjong (JK). The ratio of survived plant in poor drainage conditions was higher than that in imperfect drainage conditions, and the ratio of discolored leaf in the former was lower than that in the latter. The ratio of survived plant was highest in HS, while lowest in YP. The ratio of discolored leaf was lowest in HS, while highest in YP among 4 varieties. Root weight per plant and yield were more distinctly decreased in poor drainage conditions than those in imperfect drainage conditions. Descending order of yield in poor drainage conditions was JK, CP, YP and HS, while CP, YP, JK and HS in imperfect drainage conditions. Varietal difference of rusty colored root was more distinct than that between poor and imperfect drainage conditions. The ratio of rusty colored root was relatively low in CP and JK, while high in YP and HS. Total ginsenoside content of two-year-old ginseng grown in poor drainage conditions was increased more than that in imperfect drainage conditions due to full growth of root. Regardless of different drainage conditions total ginsenoside content was highest in YP, while lowest in HS among 4 varieties, and there were no distinct difference between CP and JK.

Soybean yield has been low and unstable in Japan and other areas in East Asia, despite long history of cultivation. This is contrasting with consistent increase of yield in North and South America. This presentation tries to describe perspective of breaking stagnation of soybean yield in East Asia, considering the factors of the different yields between regions. Large amount of rainfall with occasional dry-spell in the summer is a nature of monsoon climate and as frequently stated excess water is the factor of low and unstable soybean yield. For example, there exists a great deal of field-to-field variation in yield of 'Tanbaguro' soybean, which is reputed for high market value and thus cultivated intensively and this results in low average yield. According to our field survey, a major portion of yield variation occurs in early growth period. Soybean production on drained paddy fields is also vulnerable to drought stress after flowering. An analysis at the above study site demonstrated a substantial field-to-field variation of canopy transpiration activity in the mid-summer, but the variation of pod-set was not as large as that of early growth. As frequently mentioned by the contest winners of good practice farming, avoidance of excess water problem in the early growth period is of greatest importance. A series of technological development took place in Japan in crop management for stable crop establishment and growth, that includes seed-bed preparation with ridge and/or chisel ploughing, adjustment of seed moisture content, seed treatment with mancozeb+metalaxyl and the water table control system, FOEAS. A unique success is seen in the tidal swamp area in South Sumatra with the Saturated Soil Culture (SSC), which is for managing acidity problem of pyrite soils. In 2016, an average yield of $2.4tha^{-1}$ was recorded for a 450 ha area with SSC (Ghulamahdi 2017, personal communication). This is a sort of raised bed culture and thus the moisture condition is kept markedly stable during growth period. For genetic control, too, many attempts are on-going for better emergence and plant growth after emergence under excess water. There seems to exist two aspects of excess water resistance, one related to phytophthora resistance and the other with better growth under excess water. The improvement for the latter is particularly challenging and genomic approach is expected to be effectively utilized. The crop model simulation would estimate/evaluate the impact of environmental and genetic factors. But comprehensive crop models for soybean are mainly for cultivations on upland fields and crop response to excess water is not fully accounted for. A soybean model for production on drained paddy fields under monsoon climate is demanded to coordinate technological development under changing climate. We recently recognized that the yield potential of recent US cultivars is greater than that of Japanese cultivars and this also may be responsible for different yield trends. Cultivar comparisons proved that higher yields are associated with greater biomass production specifically during early seed filling, in which high and well sustained activity of leaf gas exchange is related. In fact, the leaf stomatal conductance is considered to have been improved during last a couple of decades in the USA through selections for high yield in several crop species. It is suspected that priority to product quality of soybean as food crop, especially large seed size in Japan, did not allow efficient improvement of productivity. We also recently found a substantial variation of yielding performance under an environment of Indonesia among divergent cultivars from tropical and temperate regions through in a part biomass productivity. Gas exchange activity again seems to be involved. Unlike in North America where transpiration adjustment is considered necessary to avoid terminal drought, under the monsoon climate with wet summer plants with higher activity of gas exchange than current level might be advantageous. In order to explore higher or better-adjusted canopy function, the methodological development is demanded for canopy-level evaluation of transpiration activity. The stagnation of soybean yield would be broken through controlling variable water environment and breeding efforts to improve the quality-oriented cultivars for stable and high yield.
The installation of subsurface drainage equipment is required for generalized use of paddy field and to improve soil productivity. The internal drainage of paddy field has improved root condition from the increasing of oxygen supply and removing noxious elements. This experiment was carried out to determine the effects of fertilization and drainage system on soil characteristic, growth and lodging trait of rice in paddy soil. A subsurface drainage system was installed a depth of 0.8m. Three fertilizer treatments were applied : 1) Conventional fertilized plot, 2) Controlled-release fertilized plot, 3) No-fertilized plot. In conventional plot, 110 kg N (as urea 46%), 45 kg P (as fused phosphate 20%) and 57 kg K (as potassium chloride 60%) per hectare fertilizers were applied. Controlled-release fertilizer was applied by 70% of N compared to the conventional plot. During the rice cropping, the water depth decrease was two times higher in subsurface drainage(SD) plot than non-drained(ND) plot. After harvesting of rice, the bulk density of sub-soil(10-20cm depth) was lower in SD plot than ND plot. After the experiment, the surface soil pH was high at SD plot but sub-soil was high at ND plot. Organic matter content was higher in all soil layer for SD plot than fro ND plot. Available $P_2O_5$ was not different between SD and ND plot for surface soil, but was high for SD plot for sub soil. The $NH_4{^+}-N$ content of soil, shoot dry matter, total nitrogen and $K_2O$ of rice plant were greater after panicle formation stage in SD plot. Total nitrogen content, $P_2O_5$ and $K_2O$ of rice root were high in SD plot after heading. Though the gravity center and 3rd internode length were greater, pulling force of rice root was higher in SD plot than ND plot. Rice yield in SD plot were low at conventional and controlled-release fertilized plot because of the greater field lodging, but yield in SD plot was high at no-fertilized plot. This study indicates that the fertilization level should be decrease on subsurface drainage system for rice cropping.
The lower portion of sloping paddy fields normally contains excessive moisture and the higher water table caused by the inflow of ground water from the upper part of the field resulting in non-uniform water content distribution. Four drainage methods namely Open Ditch, Vinyl Barrier, Pipe Drainage and Tube Bundle for multiple land use were installed within 1-m position from the lower edge of the upper embankment of sloping alluvial paddy fields. Knowledge of the spatial variability of soil water properties is of primary importance for management of agricultural lands. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of drainage in the soil on spatial variability of soil water content using the geostatistical analysis. The soil water content was collected by a TDR (Time Domain Reflectometry) sensor after the installation of subsurface drainage on regular square grid of 80 m at 20 m paddy field located at Oesan-ri, Buk-myeon, Changwon-si in alluvial slopping paddy fields ($35^{\circ}22^{\prime}$ N, $128^{\circ}35^{\prime}$). In order to obtain the most accurate field information, the sampling grid was divided 3 m by 3 m unit mesh by four drainage types. The results showed that spatial variance of soil water content by subsurface drainage was reduced, though yield of soybean showed the same trends. Value of "sill" of soil water content with semivariogram was 9.7 in Pipe Drainage, 86.2 in Open Ditch, and 66.8 in Vinyl Barrier and 15.7 in Tube Bundle.
A field experiment was conducted in a moderately well drained paddy field doveloped in a narrow strip of a valley in order to observe changes of potassium requirement in paddy production when lime is applied. The results obtained are as follows; 1. The response of paddy to potassium (K) and lime (L) is represented mathematically as follow; $Y=462.78+11.582K-0.058L-0.768K^2-0.000015L^2+0.2204KL$. It is considered that the increase of potassium reqirement when slaked lime is applied, is partially due to the increased growth of plant accomplished by the improvement of soil conditions such as the reduction of respiration inhibitors and cationic balance in soil solution. 2. An economic analysis of the use of potassium and slaked lime applying the costs, 80 won per kg of paddy, 19 won per kg of potassium and 4 won per kg of slaked lime to the response function above, showed that the slaked lime without potssium brought a large loss, whereas the use of the lime together with potassium increased the profit remarkably. The profit increased when 10kg of potassium per 10 a is applied in addition to 200kg slaked limn, per 10kg is amounted 4,685 won. 3. A linear relationship between the economic optimum dose of potassium (y) and the amount of slaked lime (x) in paddy production, is obtained as follow; $$y=7.48+\frac{2.77}{200}x$$ It is, however, considered that the amount of potassium to he used might differ according to the soil conditions such as the potassium content and cation exchange capicity of the soil.
To investigate the germanium content in paddy soil in Gyeongnam province, 310 paddy soil samples were collected at 19 areas in Gyeongnam, Ulsan and Busan. Contents of germanium in paddy soils were analyzed in different topographies, soil types and soil textures. Average content of germanium in Gyeongnam was 0.24 mr/kg, those of Masan, Jinju and Hadong were above 0.30 mg/kg. Germanium content with different topographies were no difference. Germanium contents in different soil types were 0.27 mg/kg in well adapted soil and 0.23 mg/kg in poorly drained soil. Germanium contents in different soil textures were 0.27 mg/kg in silt loam and 0.23 mg/kg in sandy loam. To determine germanium content on agricultural product in the field, content of germanium in cereals, vegetables and fruits were analyzed. Germanium content of agricultural product was high in the order of cereals>vegetables>fruits. In case of vegetables, germanium contents were high in the order of leaf vegetables>root vegetables>fruit vegetables. Germanium contents were high with 62 and $65{\mu}g/kg$ in lettuce and young radish, respectively. To analyze the germanium content in medicinal plant, samples were collected from 19 medicinal plants at Hamyang areas. Germanium contents in Angelica keiskei, Ligusticum chuanxiong, Panax ginseng and Atractylodes macrocephala were relatively high with $100{\mu}g/kg$ above.
With various Korean domestic soybeans, growth and yields analysis were conducted to select the suitable soybean cultivars for cultivation in paddy field. Distinctive aspects of the soybean growth were observed in paddy field such as retarded growth of top plants and roots, relatively higher T/R ratio followed by overgrowth of top plant. However, growth and yields were significantly different among the cultivars showing 134kg/10a in Paldokong and 385 kg/10a in Doremikong. At V5. and R2 stage, highly positive correlations $(r=0.76^{**}\~0.91^{**})$ were observed between leaf area and dry weight of top plant and/or root. T/R ratio was negatively correlated with dry weight of root $(r=-0.37^*)$ at V5 stage, while significantly correlated with leaf area $(r=-0.37^{**})$ and dry weight of top plant $(r=0.65^{**})$at R2 stage. Among the characters, only 100-seed weight was significantly correlated with yield. Considering the growth characters, 37 cultivars could be included in 3 different groups and genotypic properties such as maturity and growth habit were similar in each group. Nine cultivars in group 1 showed retarded growth from V5 to R2 stage, relatively lower T/R ratio, and good seed ripening. Average yields of the cultivers was 257kg/10a. In group 2, 12 cultivars showed higher T/R ratio due to overgrowth of top plant and lowest average yields (230 kg/l0a) due to poor seed ripening. Sixteen cultivars in group 3 grew fast from V5 to R2 stage representing late maturity traits, low T/R ratio, and good seed ripening. Average yields of the cultivars was highest among groups showing 270kg/l0a. In results, stable self-sufficiency of soybean yields could be expected by selective cultivation with high yielding cultivars ranging from 301 to 385kg/10a, such as Shinpaldalkong 2, Sohokong, Doremikong, Keumkangkong, Bukangkong, Dajangkong, and Geomjeongkong 2, or with cultivars included in group 3.
This study was carried out for some survey about soil compaction in the multi-cropping system of paddy field. Investigated sites were 90 farmer's fields in south-eastern part of Korea. The tillage practices season was different according to cropping system of paddy; in spring for mono rice cultivation and in autumn for the multi-cropping field. The average tillage depth in investigated sites was about 25 cm, however, it is different between the farmer's tillage practices and soil characteristics. It is high correlation to tillage deep and minimum resistance of penetration. The reaching soil deep to maximum resistance of penetration was about 27 cm, and average penetration resistance of the deep is 1.8~2.0 MPa for moderately fine-textured soils and more than 3.0 MPa for moderately coarse-textured soils. The difference of penetration resistance between cultivating and compacted layer was in order to sandy loam > clayey loam > clayey, and the difference was lesser in poorly drained soils than somewhat poorly ones. In the rice mono cropping field, the maximum resistance in no-tillage for 15 years was 1.18~1.25 Mpa at 20~25 cm in soil deep, however, the resistance of field with every year tillage practices was 2.03~2.21 Mpa. In the extremely compacted sandy loam textured soils, the penetration resistance at 30 cm in soil depth was drastically reduced by the subsoil from 5.2 Mpa to 3.2 Mpa, and the watermelon root in plastic film house was deep elongated.
This study was carried out to determine adequate planting date, to compare the growth characteristics between early and late maturing cultivars, and to provide the data for the cultivation techniques of soybean [Glycine max (L.) Merr.] in double cropping system with winter crops on paddy field in Korea. Cultivars were planted on 26 May, 16 June, and 7 July with a planting density of $70cm(row\;widtb)\;{\times}\;10cm$ (planting spacing). Seed yield of soybean planted on June 16 and July 7 was approximately $37\%\;and\;53\%$, respectively, less than that of conventional planting date of May 26 in Pungsan-namulkong, and planted on June 16 and July 7 was about $30\%\;and\;37\%$, respectively, less then that of conventional planting date of May 26 in Hanamkong. The number of pods and seeds per plant decreased as planting date delayed. Seed weight increased in Pungsan-namulkong but decreased in Hannamkong as planting date delayed. The flowering date was late in delayed planting plots, but it was shorted for days from emergence to flowering and from emergence to maturity. The plant height of Hannamkong was greater than Pungsan-namulkong from the emergence to flowering stages, but in contrast, it was greater in Pungsan-namulkong than Hannamkong after flowering stage (50d after emergence) when it planted on May 26. There were no significant differences between two soybean cultivars at planting dates of June 16 and July 7. Leaf number, leaf area, and dry matter were also reduced by late planting, and Both of them were shown in high reduction at the later planting. There was a high significant difference at the flowering $(r\;=\;0.87^{**})$ and pod formation $(r\;=\;0.91^{**})$ stages between leaf dry matter and seed yield. Crop growth rate (CGR) was greater at $R2\~R3$ growth stages compared to $R3\~R4\;or\;R4\~R5$ growth stages in two soybean cultivars and the greatest CGR was obtained at planting date of May 26 in two soybean cultivars except for R4-R5 growth stage in Pungsan-namulkong. There was a highly significant positive difference between the seed yield and the leaf area index (LAI) across R3 to R4 and R2 to R3 stages. The photosynthetic rate $(P_N)$ of the uppermost leaf position had no significant difference among planting dates and between two soybean cultivars. However, $P_N$ of the $7^{th}$ leaf position increased as the planting date delayed.
In order to confirm the effect of potash top dressing and to observe the effect of N, K compound fertilizers, 17-0-17, 17-0-14, and 15-0-20, specially prepared for top dressing to rice, a field experiment with rice (Oryza Sativa L., Akibare) was conducted in a poorly drained paddy field in comparison with potassium chloride. The results obtained are as follows, 1. The effect of potash top dressing to rice was so remarkable that the yield from the plots of split application of muliate potassium or compound fertilizer was significantly higher than that from the plot received no potash at all. In contrast, the plots received all the amount of potash as one dose at transplanting time showed no significant increase in yield compared with that of potash plot. 2, The effect of N, K compound fertilizer, granulated to about the size of a small bean appeared to be so slow that it gave little increase of yield when it was appiled as a top dressing at the primodial stage, but it gave an increase of yield when it was top dressed at effective tillering stage. 3, Granular N, K compound fertilizer to be top dressed at primodial stage might be prepared in small size so that the fertilizer readily go into solution when it was applied, otherwise the fertilizer should be applied eariler than the primodial stage.
