The DOR (Drainage outlet raising) in the paddy field has been suggested as one of the most important best management practices for the TMDL (Total maximum daily load) management in the technical guidelines by the NIER (National institute of environmental research). However, this method is underestimated and is not well adopted by local governments for the TMDL. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the unit load reduction equation according to the application of DOR in order to expand this equation. The original equation in the guideline was derived using the HSPF (Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran) model for 1 year in Changnyeong. We analyzed the reduction effect of the original equation application by collecting additional long-term monitoring data from the Buan, Icheon, Iksan, and Jeonju. When comparing the reduction loads between the original equation and monitoring results, the evaluation results of the original equation were 11% of the monitoring analysis results, which was underestimated. This means that the original equation needs to be improved. For assessing the equation, the HSPF Paddy-RCH model was established according to the NI ER guideline and evaluated for applicability. The performance results of the model showed a reasonable range by the statistical criteria. Modified equations 1 and 2 were proposed based on the monitoring and modeling results. Modified equation 1 was the method of modifying the original equation's main factors, and modified equation 2 was the method of applying the non-point pollution reduction efficiency according to the rainfall class using the long-term modeling results. At the level of 58.6~64.6% of monitoring data, the difference between them could be further reduced compared to the original equation. The suggested approach will be more reasonable and practicable for decision-makers and will contribute to the TMDL management plans.

Faced with aging populations, declining resources, and limited agricultural productivity, rural areas in South Korea require innovative solutions. This study investigated the potential of drone-based vegetation indices (VIs) to analyze soybean growth patterns in open-field smart agriculture in Goesan-gun, Chungbuk Province, South Korea. We monitored multi-seasonal normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and the normalized difference red edge (NDRE) data for three soybean lots with different irrigation methods (subsurface drainage, conventional, subsurface drip irrigation) using drone remote sensing. Combining NDVI (photosynthetically active biomass, PAB) and NDRE (chlorophyll) offered a comprehensive analysis of soybean growth, capturing both overall health and stress responses. Our analysis revealed distinct growth patterns for each lot. LotA(subsurface drainage) displayed early vigor and efficient resource utilization (peaking at NDVI 0.971 and NDRE 0.686), likely due to the drainage system. Lot B (conventional cultivation) showed slower growth and potential limitations (peaking at NDVI 0.963 and NDRE 0.681), suggesting resource constraints or stress. Lot C (subsurface drip irrigation) exhibited rapid initial growth but faced later resource limitations(peaking at NDVI 0.970 and NDRE 0.695). By monitoring NDVI and NDRE variations, farmers can gain valuable insights to optimize resource allocation (reducing costs and environmental impact), improve crop yield and quality (maximizing yield potential), and address rural challenges in South Korea. This study demonstrates the promise of drone-based VIs for revitalizing open-field agriculture, boosting farm income, and attracting young talent, ultimately contributing to a more sustainable and prosperous future for rural communities. Further research integrating additional data and investigating physiological mechanisms can lead to even more effective management strategies and a deeper understanding of VI variations for optimized crop performance.
Background/Aims: Endoscopic ultrasound gallbladder drainage (EUS-GBD) is gaining attention as a treatment method for cholecystitis. However, only a few studies have assessed the outcomes of permanent stenting with EUS-GBD. Therefore, we evaluated the clinical outcomes of permanent stenting using EUS-GBD. Methods: This was a retrospective, single-center cohort study. The criteria for EUS-GBD at our institution are a high risk for surgery, inability to perform surgery owing to poor performance status, and inability to obtain consent for emergency surgery. EUS-GBD was performed using a 7-Fr double-pigtail plastic stent with a dilating device. The primary outcomes were the recurrence-free rate of cholecystitis and the late-stage complication-avoidance rate. Secondary outcomes were technical success, clinical success, and procedural adverse events. Results: A total of 41 patients were included in the analysis. The median follow-up period was 168 (range, 10-1,238) days. The recurrence-free and late-stage complication-avoidance rates during the follow-up period were 95% (38 cases) and 90% (36 cases), respectively. There were only two cases of cholecystitis recurrence during the study period. Conclusions: EUS-GBD using double-pigtail plastic stent was safe and effective with few complications, even in the long term, in patients with acute cholecystitis.

Purpose: Malignant ascites is a common complication in terminal cancer patients. Less-invasive pigtail catheter insertion is the most frequent procedure in patients who need repeated ascites drainage. This study investigated effects and adverse events associated with catheter insertion for ascites drainage and evaluated prognostic outcomes. Methods: We reviewed medical records between 2010 and 2013 of hospice and palliative care institutions in Seoul, South Korea. Among 2,608 inpatients, 67 patients received ascites pigtail catheter drainage. We reviewed demographic data, palliative performance scale, laboratory data, duration of catheter insertion, prevalence and type of complications, use and duration of antibiotics, and survival time. Univariate and multivariate Cox regression models were used to evaluate prognostic outcomes related with catheter insertion. Results: Ascites drainage was performed most commonly in hepatobiliary and gastric cancer patients. Ascites symptoms improved in 55 patients after the catheter drainage. Adverse events included pain (19.4%), leakage (14.9%), disconnection (7.5%), catheter occlusion (6%) and fever (4.5%). In Cox regression analysis, survival time from the catheter insertion was significantly associated with Palliative Performance Scale (PPS) (HR 0.73; P value 0.045) and serum sodium level (HR 2.77; P value 0.003) in a multivariate model. Conclusion: Patients' PPS and serum sodium level should be considered before making a decision of pigtail catheter insertion.

The most agricultural concrete structures for the irrigation and drainage are exposed to the underwater condition at the irrigation period and they take the influence on very severe cold in the winter. Therefore, it is impossible to use repair materials used to the general concrete structures. The research need the development of the repair material for a performance enhance of the agricultural underwater concrete structures. This research evaluated the mechanical and durability performance of the latex modified repair mortar for underwater concrete structures which peformed the repair in the underwater according to the characteristic of the agricultural concrete structure. The latex modified repair mortar is a material that minimize the effect of the ecosystem, environment and the segregation. In this research, the construction condition of the latex modified repair mortar for agricultural concrete structures was considered and the test specimens made in the underwater condition. Test results was then compared with target performance and commercial repair mortar. Experimental test results indicated that the mechanical and durability performance of latex modified repair mortar for agricultural underwater concrete structure satisfied all target performance. Also, the latex modified repair mortar resulted in better repair performance than the commercial repair mortar.

In this work, the non-ionic polyethylene oxide(PEO)/phenolic formaldehyde resin(PFR) retention system, which was less affected by furnish charge, was analyzed for possibility and effectiveness when using recycled stock. When the micropolymer was added at the PEO/PFR retention system and the PAM/bentonite retention system, performance of retention and drainage was improved. When the cationic micropolymer was added on the PEO/PFR retention system, the highest retention was achieved. The Polyacrylamide(PAM)/bentonite system induced flocculation of white pitch by electrostatic flocculation. On the other hand, the non-ionic PEO/PFR retention system induced less flocculation of white pitch than the PAM/bentonite retention system.
This paper presents the development of the underwater cleaning robot platform for a higher efficiency in manufacturing industry. Human operators directly go into the cistern and clean sludge after drainage of the water so far. It is sometimes dangerous because of the harmful chemical materials from the product making process. In addition, it takes long time for water drainage and supplying it back. However, the robot cleaning operation does not need to drain water so that it could be applied to the sludge cleaning work at any time without the plant pause. Moreover, it can prevent the safety accidents because human operators are not necessary to enter directly the sludge cisterns. This paper shows the performance of cleaning work that can be applied in the industrial field through the design and development of underwater cleaning robot platform. And these results demonstrate that the developed underwater cleaning robot has great possibilities to clean other industrial water cisterns.
Although lots of safety inspection and precision safety diagnosis have been conducted on concrete retaining wall, there is no comprehensive analysis on the basis of the accumulated data associated with the statistic. Especially, the concentrated management is necessary on the evaluation items that cause critical damages for the efficient performance. In this regard, this study conducted a correlation analysis between the 18 condition evaluation items and defect index for the concrete retaining wall as well as how each item affects the final defect index as much as in the manual. As a result, correlation coefficient between sliding and overturning was 0.601, which means that they have a strong correlation, and the most influential item on defect index is the condition of drainage that scored the 0.750 correlation coefficient. In addition, as a result of regression analysis, the condition of drainage with the 0.683 correlation coefficient has a strong correlation with the defect index. If the condition evaluation items are integrated or readjusted based on the results of the statistical analysis in this study, the more efficient and accurate maintenance will be possible.
Information of local solar radiation is essential for many field, including water resources management, crop yield estimation, crop growth model, solar energy systems and irrigation and drainage design. Unfortunately, solar radiation measurements are not easily available due to the cost and maintenance and calibration requirements of the measuring equipment and station. Therefore, it is important to elaborate methods to estimate the solar radiation based on readily available meteorological data. In this study, two empirical equations are employed to estimate daily solar radiation using Cheongju Regional Meteorological Office data. Two scenarios are considered: (a) sunshine duration data are available for a given location, or (b) only daily cloudiness index records exist. Simple linear regression with daily sunshine duration and cloudiness index as the dependent variable accounted for 91% and 80%, respectively of the variation of solar radiation(H) at 2011. Daily global solar radiation is highly correlated with sunshine duration. In order to indicate the performance of the models, the statistical test methods of the mean bias error(MBE), root mean square error(RMSE) and correlation coefficient(r) are used. Sunshine duration and cloudiness index can be easily and reliably measured and data are widely available.
A 75-year-old man who was diagnosed as having a fluid-filled giant bulla was treated with a modified Brompton technique due to his poor performance status. Percutaneous drainage, suction, and talc sclerotherapy through a Foley catheter can be good treatment options for patients with conditions that are too poor to allow surgical intervention, especially if there is adhesion between a giant bulla and parietal pleura. Talc can also be used safely when mixed with normal saline as a sclerosant.
