  • The present paper explores rationales for the process-oriented approach to teaching writing and their implications for EFL writing classes. The product-oriented traditional approach to writing has put too much emphasis on linguistic aspects of writing. It fails to see the enormous complexity of the act of composing. In the process-oriented paradigm, writing is regarded as a messy process leading to clarity and the writer discovers meaning instead of merely' finding an appropriate structure in which to package ideas already developed from the beginning. Based on the underlying assumptions, some suggestions are made for EFL writing classes. Firstly, practitioners should be aware that writing is a recursive activity in which the writer moves backward and forwards between drafting and revising, with stages of re-planning in between. Secondly, writing teachers should help the student writers build an awareness of themselves as a writer and encourage their sense of confidence in writing. Lastly, students should be encouraged to pay their attention to content revision at first, and delay editing changes until the last draft.

  • This study explores perspectives on responding to EFL students' compositions at the semantic level. In the last three decades, there has been a shift from product-oriented approach to process-oriented one to teaching writing. The shift has led to the criticism of the traditional view on teacher response. The traditional view has been under attack for its overemphasis upon form and ineffectiveness on improving student writing skill. It is also noted that research into students' reactions to the traditional teacher response has been inconclusive. The process-oriented approach, on the other hand, draws its attention to meaning and the logical development of thought as well as linguistic matters. In this context, the present study discusses what EFL teachers need to take into account in providing the semantic-level feedback on students' compositions. Firstly, teacher response to student writing is on-going; teacher feedback involves teacher intervention in the drafting process, the revision process, and the presentation of product. Secondly, in the writing conferences, the teacher provides students an opportunity to talk about writing, assistance and advice on the content/meaning of the written text, helping them expand and clarify thinking about audience(reader) and purpose.

  • Most of researches for deep drawing process have been performed on the formability of axisymmetric blank, but there is an insufficient study on the formability of non-axisymmetric blank. In addition, the conventional blank shape has been determined by the trial-and-error method using industrial experience and post processing test. Therefore only approximated shape of the blank can be presented. In this study, the optimal blank shape and concrete drafting method in deep drawing process with biaxisymmetric elliptical shape is proposed. Through the deep drawing experiment, it is found that the optimal blank shape gives the most uniform thickness of the products in the first process

  • The rapid development of information technology has much influence on architectural design. Collaboration beyond time and space has been possible by networking the work environment and digital products. Thus, the virtual design studio on architectural design is getting more important than ever before. This research investigates a virtual design studio methodology for effective collaboration. The building design process and the communication model are studied and possible modes of design collaboration are defined. This paper proposes an internet-based Virtual Reality(VR) communication tool as well as new design methodology that we call the 'Hybrid Design Methodology'. We expect that this design methodology will dramatically increase design feedbacks, and thus results in better design alternatives. There are two issues involved in developing the collaborative virtual design studio: 1) an intuitive interface that presents collaborative relations, and 2) three-dimensional computer-mediated communication tool using sketch as a modeling method. Further research issues identified at the end of the research include developing algorithms that translate mapping images to polygons for the drafting phase in the design process.

  • This paper presents design automation system using API and parametric modeling of solid modeler, which is applied on axial fans for cooling towers. The design data including chord length and twist angle according to the fan length are given by design program, and API functions are applied to automate the modeling and assembly process of fan blade. The boss to connect fan and motor is designed with parametric design function provided by UG so as to be flexibly changed by the value of design parameters. The process of generating 2-D drafting for parts and an assembly is also automated. With developed system, the modeling time is reduced to 5 minutes even with unskilled operators.

  • Linear density regularity is one of the important characteristics of fiber bundle and yarns, influencing the process performance and the product quality. Analysis on the variation of bundle thickness for various draft ratios and frequencies is therefore of great significance, because an optimum drafting condition can be obtained by establishing the effect of major process factors on the output. • In Japanese steel fabricators, significant time is devoted to drafting fabrication drawings compared to the fabrication process itself, highlighting a need for efficiency improvements. A primary issue is the inadequate consideration of constructability at the design stage. Steel fabricators often sign contracts based on partially completed designs, leading to frequent modifications from the creation of fabrication drawings up until just before fabrication begins, which hampers productivity improvements. To address this challenge, this study proposes separating and contracting engineering from fabrication early in the design phase through front-loading detailed design. If front-loading is feasible, it could reduce the frequency of changes and corrections, improving the drawing process and potentially enhancing efficiency in steel fabricators. Furthermore, the study explores what constitutes feasible engineering for front-loading, considering that steel fabrication involves aspects beyond mere structural design.

  • Machine element design is a very important course in the undergraduate program of mechanical engineering in that it presents traditional design concepts. While computer aided design(CAD) receives more attention, students tend to ignore the machine element design or traditional design concepts. However, design methodologies related to machine elements are utilized quite often in practical fields. Also, design methodologies provide good insight for the decision making process of modern design. Generally, CAD is used for simple drafting without the real design process in the undergraduate program. Design software has been developed for various machine elements. Through menu display, a user can select or furnish the design input such as design objects, dimensions, environmental forces and usages, and safety factors. Then the software carries out the design processes which are the same as those of textbooks. The result of the design is filtered to have the values in the standards. The designed machine element is drawn via commercial CAD software. The software has been developed with C language on a personal computer. The developed software is being utilized successfully in a design course, and the experiences are discussed in this paper. The software can be used in industries which require the repeated process of the machine element design.

  • This study aims to survey whether local governments have legislated laws and regulations on environment impact assessment system, to compare and analyze specific projects and their scale, assessment items, and procedures & discussion process, to identify issues and generate improvement plans, and to suggest a direction for future legislation to local governments that plan to legislate laws and regulations in the future. Major outcome of the study are as follows. First, terminologies used for environment impact assessment by local governments need to be unified. Also, laws and regulations need to be legislated soon. Second, in "urban development project" areas, a total of nine project areas including "quarrying of soil and stone, sand, gravel, and minerals" was essential common projects. A total of six project types were added or newly established compared to national systems. Among them, four project types were added within national-level project areas and two project types were not available under the national-level project areas and newly added due to the nature of local governments. Third, in terms of project scale, scale enhancement of "urban development project" was most common. Analysis showed that in case of clean natural environment such as Cheju Island, it is necessary to consider reinforcing project areas where development activities take place directly in forests or rivers such as "industrial base and complex development", "water resource development", and "development of tourism complex." Fourth, the discussion and review procedures of assessment reports were similar to those at government level. However, in case of Seoul city, it is required to write a "preparation plan" before drafting an assessment report. The city features partial introduction of scoping and screening, which allows to exempt discussion procedures if impact on environment is found to be minimal after drafting the assessment report. In case of national-level, it has a dual system that is split between Ministry of Construction and Transportation and Ministry of Environment. However, in case of environment impact assessment of local governments, it is a single system where city mayors and provincial governors are in charge of both project execution and environmental assessment. Therefore, the most important task is how to satisfy objectiveness and accountability.

  • The ICC is amending international trade rules such as Incoterms to respond to periodically changing international trade environments. Moreover, a drafting group has been formed for developing the eighth amendment and the Incoterms. Due to the recent development of information and communication technology, interest in smart work is increasing globally. Smart work is a concept that enables works to be performed without time and space constraints, and the mobile office is a typical form of smart work. Smart work has brought significant changes to the way that workers perform their jobs, and it has considerable impacts on international trade transactions. This study examines the impact of the development of information and communication technology on electronic trade customs and analyzes the revision process of Incoterms for electronic document informatization. Also, we provide implications for the 8th amendment of Incoterms.
