Numerical investigation of truck aerodynamics on several classes of infrastructures

  • This paper describes the effect of different testing parameters (configuration of infrastructure and truck position on road) on truck aerodynamic coefficients under cross wind conditions, by means of a numerical approach known as Large Eddy Simulation (LES). In order to estimate the air flow behaviour around both the infrastructure and the truck, the filtered continuity and momentum equations along with the Smagorinsky-Lilly model were solved. A solution for these non-linear equations was approached through the finite volume method (FVM) and using temporal and spatial discretization schemes. As for the results, the aerodynamic coefficients acting on the truck model exhibited nearly constant values regardless of the Reynolds number. The flat ground is the infrastructure where the rollover coefficient acting on the truck model showed lowest values under cross wind conditions (yaw angle of $90^{\circ}$), while the worst infrastructure studied for vehicle stability was an embankment with downward-slope on the leeward side. The position of the truck on the road and the value of embankment slope angle that minimizes the rollover coefficient were determined by successfully applying the Response Surface Methodology.

  • 지하철 역사 화재는 다수의 인명피해를 동반한 대구 지하철사고 이후 지하철 차량 내장재, 지하역사의 제연 시스템과 승객이 지상으로 탈출하기 위해 필요한 피난시간 등과 같은 기존 시스템에 대한 적정성 논란을 가져왔다. 기존의 제연설비는 화재 시배기 용량과 역사 시설구조의 복잡성으로 인한 제어방법의 한계가 따른다. 특히 지하철 역사 화재는 지중에서 지상으로 대피하는 형태로서 이는 부력으로 인한 연기의 이동방향과 피난방향이 같아지게 되므로 피난자들이 일반화재보다도 더욱 많은 연기의 영향에 노출되어져 버리는 결과가 발생한다. 본 연구에서는 하향식 피난 동선을 설계하여 피난완료시간의 단축 및 연기 층으로부터 피난자들을 격리시켜 희생자를 줄일 수 있는 방안을 제안하였다.

Membrane Concentrate Thickening by Hollow-fiber Microfilter in Drinkin Water Treatment Processes

  • A novel system to thicken the concentrated colloidal solution from membrane water treat-ment processes was developed. A hollow-fiber microfilter(hydrophilic polyethylene nominal pore size 0.1 μm total surface area 0.42 m2) was installed in an acrylic housing that has an aeration port 5 cm below the membrane and a clarifier in the bottom. The concentrate was uniformly supplied from the top of the housing. Bacuum filtration caused downward flow of concentrate and as a result thickening interface. The addition of poly-aluminum chloride (PAC) resulted in rapid increase of trans-membrane pressure (TMP) and in no improvement of the filtered water turbidity and thickening process. Two types of con-centrate and concentrate turbidity had little effect on the increase of TMP and concentrate thickening. It was observed that for the same height of membrane housing membrane surface area to housing volume (A/V) ratio had significant effect on the increase of TMP. When the housing volume was increased ten times the increasing rate of TMP was three times faster as compared to the original housing. A hydraulic model successfully simulated the formation and sedimentation of thickening interface.

  • The previous work (Cheong et al., 2006) where the characteristics of acoustic emissions of wind turbines has been investigated according to the methods of power regulation, has showed that the acoustic power of wind turbine using the stall control for power regulation is more correlated with the wind speed than that using the pitch control. In this paper, basically extending this work, the noise generation characteristics of large modern upwind wind turbines are experimentally indentified according to the power regulation methods. To investigate the noise generation mechanisms, the distribution of noise sources in the rotor plane is measured by using the Beam-forming measurement system (B&K 7768, 7752, WA0890) consisting of 48 microphones. The array results for the 660 kW wind turbine show that all noise is produced during the downward movement of the blades. This result show good agreement with the theoretical result using the empirical formula with the parameters: the convective amplification; trailing edge noise directivity; flow-speed dependence. This agreement implies that the trailing edge noise is dominant over the whole frequency range of the noise from the 660 kW wind turbine using the pitch control for power regulation.

  • Turbulent jet in a crossflow, issuing from a row of holes on a convex surface of 90 .deg. bend duct, is predicted by a 3-dimensional numerical method. The Cartesian coordinate system in adopted in upstream and downstream tangents and the cylindrical polar coordinate system in curved region. The Reynolds stresses and heat fluxes are obtained from a standard k-e model in the core region and van Driest model in the vicinity of the wall. The governing equations are discretized by a finite volume method and solutions are obtained by a locally elliptic calculation procedure. Pressure and convective terms are treated by SIMPLE algorithm and hybrid scheme respectively. A vortex initially induced by the injected jet has been built up due to the interaction with the secondary flow caused by pressure gradient and centrifugal force. The vortex structure has a strong influence on the wall cooling effectiveness. Another vortex like horseshoe is formed in the vicinity of the injection hole and its strength is getting weak as it moves downward.

제주도지역 대수층들의 수직적 분포와 수리적 연결성

  • The environmental tracers of $^3$H and NO$_3$ were investigated in terms of vertical connections between basaltic aquifers and underlying sedimentary formations of Seoguipo formation that is not found in eastern coastal area and U formation. In western coastal area, $^3$H shows values less than 0.5TU In the wells completed in Seoguipo formation whereas it is greater than 2TU in other area. For the wells in western area, NO$_3$ concentrations are below background level though the nearby land uses are mainly agricultural. The groundwater heads are much lower in eastern coastal area than western area in spite that recharge rate of eastern area is 1.7 times higher than that of western area. The basaltic aquifer is thicker by 70m in eastern coastal area than in western coastal area, which is insufficient to explain much lower groundwater heads in eastern area. These hydrogeological characteristics suggest that for the basaltic aquifers, the Seoguipo formation acts as a lower boundary which could limit downward groundwater flow in basaltic aquifers whereas the U formation is unlikely.

  • CFRD (Concrete Faced Rockfill Dam) has been world-widely constructed due to a lot of advantages compared with rockfill dam and recently, sand/gravel materials, instead of crushed rock materials, are also utilized as a main rockfill material to overcome geological and environmental problems. In this paper, the process of water infiltration into the originally unsaturated sand/gravel-fill dam is studied using two-dimensional saturated-unsaturated seepage theory. According to the results of seepage analysis, if the effective drainage zone is installed in the dam, the reservoir water infiltrate into the dam along a downward flow path towards the lower drainage area. The main body constructed with sand/gravel materials, therefore, remains unsaturated.

공조공간에서 수평토출형 에어커튼의 차단 성능 (Isolation Performance of the Single-Sided air Curtain in Air-Conditioned Space)

  • Air curtains are widely used in commercial and public buildings to replace solid doors where traffic of people is predicted. At doorways where the solid door is open continuously or intermittently, an air curtain may be installed in order to reduce the flow of heat and moisture from the enclosed space to the outside. The purpose of this paper is to predict isolation performance of the single-sided air curtain when the wind is blowing. For the study, a numerical simulation is used to find the influence of various jet velocities on the efficiency of the single-sided air curtain device which is mounted at the side of the doorway. The isolation performance of the single-sided air curtain is evaluated by sealing efficiency which provides the assessment of the infiltration air ratio. According to the result of this study, the single-sided air curtain has lower sealing efficiency than downward-blowing air curtain. Therefore, for energy conservation in heating space, the single-sided air curtain is not recommended because of its low effectiveness.

  • To enhance application of FPC in food industry, salmon FPC hydrolysates were produced and their functional properties were investigated. Hydrolysates of salmon FPC showed high solubilities ranged from approximately $80\~95\%$. Emulsifying activity index (EAI) values of hydrolysates were higher than that of egg white, however sugar ester showed the highest EAI value of 32.5. Though sugar ester had the best emulsifying stability value $({\Delta}EAI)$ of 9.65, hydrolysates showed better ${\Delta}EAI$ value than that of egg white. Foam Activity of hydrolysates was predominantly better than those of controls and also foam stability value showed similiar trend. Osmolality of hydrolysates was increased with the increase of degree of hydrolysis (DH) and concentration of protein, but it showed very lower osmolality than that of NaCl. Flow property of hydrolysates showed different upward-downward curves, and hysteresis loop increased with the increase of DH. ACE inhibitory activity showed similiar value ranged from $21.1\~24\%$ at all DH values.

평등전계에서 도전성 구형 입자의 운동 (Motion of Conductive Spherical Particle under Uniform Electric Field)

  • The motion of a conductive spherical particle under uniform electric field is investigated in order to find a suitable method for removing the conducting solid impurities contained in liquid plastic. When the positive dc voltage applied to the upper electrode, the vertical up-and-down motion of a charged particle by electrostatic force is observed by a charge-coupled device (CCD) camera or a high-speed video camera. The experimental data of the static threshold voltage by which the particle starts to move toward the counter electrode in air or silicone oil are in good agreement with theoretical value. When the applied voltage is larger than the static threshold voltage, the particle motion pattern in silicone oil consists of four stages: upward motion, stopping at the upper electrode, downward motion and stopping at the lower electrode. The stopping motion on the electrode is thought to be caused by the liquid flow accompanied by the particle motion. The particle charge calculated by integrating the pulse current, which is generated by the charge exchange between the electrode and the particle, is approximately 0.1~0.25 times of the theoretical value. This study is expected to help understand the electric properties of microparticles in oil circuit breaker (OCB) and oil transformer and improve their performance and longevity.
