Adaptive algorithm for Double-Talk Echo Cancellation

  • In the double-talk situation where both the near-end and far-end signal present, the performance of echo cancellation using the conventional LMS algorithm is easily degraded because it freezes the adaptation in this situation. Recently CLMS and ECLMS algorithms were proposed to solve this problem. These algorithms could be used to adapt the filter´s parameters continuously even in the double-talk situation. In this paper, we propose new recursion formulas to calculate the ECLMS algorithm. And we compare and analyze the performances of double-talk echo canceller according to changing the value of channel tracking factors ${\alpha}$, ${\beta}$ and forgetting factor λ.   • In this paepr, we propose an intelligent double talk detector that can enhance the performance of the acoustic echo cancellation system. The conventional double talk detection methods often misunderstand the echo path changes as double talk. Although there exist several detection methods that can distinguish the echo path changes from the double-talks, they show poor tracking performance because of the excessive decision delay for the discrimination and can only be used after the adaptive digital filter converges. A new and more effective ditetion algorithm has been proposed, where the detection mechanism is performed by observing the change rate of the reflection coefficients of the two lattice predictors that re placed on the near-end and far-end terminals. The excellence of the proposed method is verified by extensive computer simulations using real speech signals.

  • In this paper, we propose a new double talk detection algorithm which detects near end signals with less degradation, tracking echo path variation of echo canceler simultaneously. Our method makes use of a cross-correlation between channel input signals and estimated error signals and a normalized cross-correlation between microphone input signals and estimated error signals. By combing thresholds for these cross-correlations pertinently, this algorithm discriminates between variation of echo path and occurrence of double talk. These two cross-correlation are used to detect double talk periods, tracking echo path variation. During the detection period, adjustive adaptive filter is ceased to prevent the echo canceler from being disturbed by near end signals. Also, the echo canceler will still be kept on for tracking any variation in echo path. Through computer simulation results, it was confirmed that the proposed algorithm shows better performance, tracking echo path variation and detecting the double talk periods, than the Ye et. al's and the NLMS algorithms from ERLE viewpoint.

  • This paper describes an acoustic echo canceller with double-talk using BSS(: Blind Signal Separation) based on the geometric concept. The acoustic echo canceller may be deteriorated or diverged during the double-talk period. So we use the blind signal separation to detect the double talking by separating the near-end speech signal from the mixed microphone signal. In the closed reverberation environment, the blind signal separation extracts the near-end signal from unknown signals with the transformation and rotation based on the geometric concept. By this method, the acoustic echo canceller operates irrespective of double-talking. We verified performances of the proposed acoustic echo canceller by computer simulations. The results show that the acoustic echo canceller with this algorithm detects the double-talk periods thoroughly, and operates stably in the normal state without diverging of coefficients after ending the double-talking.

An Acoustic Echo Canceller for Double-talk by Blind Signal Separation (암묵신호분리를 이용한 동시통화 음향반향제거기)

  • This paper describes an acoustic echo canceller with double-talk by the blind signal separation. The acoustic echo canceller is deteriorated or diverged in the double-talk period. So we use the blind signal separation to estimate the near-end speech signal and to eliminate the estimated signal from the residual signal. The blind signal separation extracts the near-end signal with dual microphones by the iterative computations using the 2nd order statistical character. Because the mixture model of blind signal separation is multi-channel in the closed reverberation environment, we used the copied coefficients of echo canceller without computing the separation coefficients. By this method, the acoustic echo canceller operates irrespective of double-talking. We verified performances of the proposed acoustic echo canceller by simulations. The results show that the acoustic echo canceller with this algorithm detects the double-talk periods thoroughly, and then operates stably in the normal state without the divergence of coefficients after ending the double-talking. And it shows the ERLE of averagely 20dB higher than the normal LMS algorithm.

Double Talk Detection using the Fuzzy Inference (퍼지 추론을 이용한 동시통화 검출)

  • This paper addresses a new double detection algorithm which is based on the fuzzy control in the adaptive echo canceller of communication system. In this method, the two input of the fuzzy inference for detecting double talk condition are used. The one is the cross-correlation coefficient between the error signal and the primary signal which is the summed signal of the real echo signal and the near-end signal. The other is the cross-correlation coefficient between the estimation error signal and the primary signal. The fuzzy controller made a fuzzification for two inputs by the membership functions of trapezoid and them became the composition using inference rules. The composed result is defuzzificated by the center gravity method. The output is compared with two threshold values to detect double talk and echo path variation effectively. It is confirmed by computer simulation that this fuzzy double talk detector is able to track echo path variation accurately.

  • In this paper, we proposed a performance improvement method of the double talk detector which can operate before the echo canceller converges. Microphone input signal is filtered by the linear prediction filter and this filtered signal is used for detection. The coefficients of the linear prediction filter are given by the far-end talker signal. During single talk, filtered signal has low power since the characteristics of the echo signal is similar with those of the far-end talker signal. But, during double talk, the filtered signal does not have low power because the signal of different characteristics is included in the microphone signal. Double talk is detected by this difference. Simulations using real speech signals verified that the proposed method outperformed the conventional methods.

  • In this paper, we propose a novel approach of an acoustic echo cancellation (AEC) algorithm which is differently adopted in the relevant period condition by the suppression parameter of a parametric wiener filter (PWF). The PWF uses the suppression parameter to compensate uncertainty of acoustic echo signal estimation. The existing PWF method using the fixed suppression parameter derives the distortion of the near-end signal at the double-talk. To solve this problem, the boundary condition is devised using decision of the double-talk detection (DTD) algorithm and voice activity detector (VAD). The boundary condition makes it possible to treat differently depending on the case of the single-talk and double-talk. According to the experimental results, the proposed approach is found to be effective for acoustic echo cancellation using the boundary condition.

Post-processing for the elimination of residual echo in double-talk environment (동시통화 환경에서 잔여반향 제거를 위한 후처리 기법)

  • The P-ECLMS algorithm adapted the existing Post-Processing method occurs the distortion of the near-end signal at the double-talk situationt. To solve this problem, we propose the SP-ECLMS(Selective Post-Processing ECLMS) algorithm which makes the Post-Processing coefficient differently at the case of the single-talk and the double-talk. When the correlation level is not output less than 30%, the proposed algorithm output the original signal to prevent the signal's distortion.

  • This paper presents a robust speech end-point detector using double talk detection in echoic conditioned speech recognition robot. The proposed method consists of combining conventional end-point detector result and double talk detector result. We have tested the proposed method in isolated word recognition system under echoic conditioned environment. As a result, the proposed algorithm shows superior performance of 30 % to the available techniques in the points of speech recognition rates.
