  • In the paper, the noise reduction characteristics of a double-gap resonator, which is installed inside an enclosed cavity and is composed of two air-gaps and two partition sheets, are introduced by theoretical analyses and experimets. Analysis for a simple, theoretical model reveals that the double-gap resonator is more effective than the single-gap resonator that consists of an air-gap and a partition sheet, in that the former requires a smaller space than the latter. Furthermore, this theoretical conclusion is verified by comparison experiments using an actually manufactured enclosed cavity, of which the boundary surfaces are made of thick, stiff panels that can be assumed as rigid walls.

  • This thesis focuses on the study of high-power, coupled-cavity traveling-wave tube(CCTWT) for radar applications. The CCTWT employed a reentrant double-slot staggered RF cavity structure. Computational analysis of the X-band, double-slot staggered structures is carried out through the use of HFSS code, which solves Maxwell's equations fully in three-dimensions. The non-linear, large-signal performance of CCTWTs are predicted from numerical simulations using a three-dimensional particle-in-cell code, MAGIC3D. With beam voltage set to 12.7~13kV and beam current at 300mA, the CCTWT produces a saturated radiation power of 350~430W, corresponding to an electronic efficiency of 8.9~11.2% and a gain of 23.7~24.2dB within a frequency range of 7.9~8.4GHz.

  • Terphenyl dialdehyde 6 was obtained in 17.4% overall yield through oxidative coupling, methylation, and bisformylation reactions starting from p-cresol, and then coupled intermolecularly using McMurry reaction to give 22-membered macrocylic host 7 in 14.4% yield. In crystal structure host 7 has $C2_v$ symmetry with cis-cis configuration of two double bonds. Four methoxy groups adjacent to double bonds and the other two methoxy groups are directed opposite side, forming a cavity which can nest a guest. The cavity is filled by two inward-turned methyl groups out of four methoxy groups adjacent to double bonds. The kinetically controlled reaction mechanism leading to cis product was proposed. The cation binding properties of 7 were obtained using picrate extraction experiment from $D_2O\; into\; CDCl_3\; at\; 25^{\circ}C$. All the spherical cations (from $Li^+ to NH4^+)$ are complexed with free energies of $7.3{\pm}0.3$ kcal/mol.

  • A theoretical analysis of strong double dips in the amplitude patterns of electromagnetic field scattered by an air cavity embedded in a dielectric medium is presented with the experimental and the numerical simulation. The strongest double dips occur at the locations corresponding to the top and the bottom of the cavity by adjusting the excitation wavelength nearly equal to its radius. In particular, it may be shown that these double dips always become two nulls at a particular sending frequency in the near-field region. The locus of the frequency providing the strongest dip as a function of the observation distance is plotted.

  • We present a modified method for the treatment of brain abscess. The double lumen extraventricular drainage (EVD) catheter which was developed for the intracerebral hematoma management, was applied for the treatment of brain abscess drainage. We placed the double lumen EVD catheter into the abscess cavity by free-hand technique and irrigated the abscess cavity continuously with antibiotics solution for 7 days. Simultaneous intravenous antibiotics was administered for 4 weeks. The continuous irrigation with double lumen catheter was found to be safe and effective treatment modality in the brain abscess.

  • In this paper, derivation of the STL (Sound Transmission Loss) of the double plates installed in an impedance tube is discussed using an analytic method, where an air cavity exists between the plates. Vibration of the plates and sound pressure field inside the tube are expressed in terms of infinite series of modal functions. Under the plane wave assumption, it is shown that consideration of the first few modes yields sufficiently accurate results, and locations of peaks and dips are investigated. It is determined that the peak frequencies of the double plates coincide with those of each single plate. When the two plates are identical, the STL of the double plates as well as that of the single plate become zero at the natural frequencies of the single plate. The location and amplitude of the dips are investigated using an approximation solution when the cavity depth is very small.

  • A numerical investigation is made of unsteady double-diffusive convection of a Boussinesq fluid in a rectangular cavity subject to time-periodic thermal excitations. The fluid is initially stratified between the top endwall of low solute concentration and the bottom endwall of high solute concentration. A time-dependent heat flux varying in a square wave fashion, is applied on one sidewall to induce buoyant convection. The influences of the imposed periodicity on double-diffusive convection are scrutinized. A special concern is on the occurrence of resonance that the fluctuations of flow and attendant heat and mass transfers are mostly amplified at certain eigenmodes of the fluid system. Numerical solutions are analyzed to illustrate the characteristic features of resonant convection.

  • Diffraction patterns of the copolarized and the crosspolarized total electric fields by a spherical air cavity in a dielectric medium are analyzed in the forward near-field region when the wavelength of the incident plane wave is comparable to one half of the cavity radius. It is shown that double nulls and dips of the copolarized and the crosspolarized total electric fields exist in the measurement plane tansverse to the propagating direction of the incident field, and their dependences on the frequency, the distance of the measurement plane, and the measurement angle are analyzed.

  • Vibrations transmitted through rolling tire are major sources of road noise in vehicle interior on the range of $0{\sim}500Hz$. Among various road noises, tire cavity noise makes many problems recently. Vehicle NVH performance has improved better and road surfaces are made well. But tires are changed to high inches and low series. So tire cavity noise becomes more serious. In this paper, a designed material for reducing tire cavity noise is proposed. On the surface inside tire, this material is attached at one position using double-tape. This material disperses the pressure variations inside the tire. So a spindle forces at wheel center are reduced. And tire cavity noise at vehicle interior is also reduced. Durability is verified by tire only test and vehicle test. Noise performance also compared with peak levels after attaching this material.

  • A comparative analysis of thermal models in the lattice Boltzmann method(LBM) for the simulation of laminar natural convection in a square cavity is presented. A HYBRID method, in which the thermal equation is solved by the Navier-Stokes equation method while the mass and momentum conservation are resolved by the lattice Boltzmann method, is introduced and its merits are explained. All the governing equations are discretized on a cell-centered, non-uniform grid using the finite-volume method. The convection terms are treated by a second-order central-difference scheme with a deferred correction method to ensure stability of the solutions. The HYBRID method and the double-population method are applied to the simulation of natural convection in a square cavity and the predicted results are compared with the benchmark solutions given in the literatures. The predicted results are also compared with those by the conventional Navier-Stokes equation method. In general, the present HYBRID method is as accurate as the Navier-Stokes equation method and the double-population method. The HYBRID method shows better convergence and stability than the double-population method. These observations indicate that this HYBRID method is an efficient and economic method for the simulation of incompressible fluid flow and heat transfer problem with the LBM.
