  • A forward-looking automotive radar typically utilizes the frequency modulated continuous wave(FMCW) or pulsed-Doppler waveform for the Information acquisition of the target range and velocity. In order to obtain the high resolution target information, however, a narrow pulse width and wide bandwidth are inherently required, thus resulting in high peak power and high speed digital converter processing. In this paper, a stepped-frequency pulsed-Doppler(SFPD) waveform algorithm is proposed for high resolution forward looking automotive radar application. The performance of the proposed SFPD waveform technique is analyzed and compared with the conventional FMCW and PD method. Since this technique can be used for the high resolution target imaging with arbitrary range and Doppler resolution, it is expected to be useful In automotive radar target classification for the precision collision avoidance applications in the future.

  • The compressive sensing model for range-Doppler estimation can be expressed as an under-determined linear system y = Ax. To find the solution of the linear system with the compressive sensing method, matrix A should be sufficiently incoherent and x to be sparse. In this paper, we propose a transmission waveform design method that maintains the bandwidth required by the sonar system while lowering the mutual coherence of the matrix A so that the matrix A is incoherent. The proposed method combines two methods of optimizing the sensing matrix with the alternating projection and suppressing unwanted frequency bands using the DFT (Discrete Fourier Transform) matrix. We compare range-Doppler estimation performance of existing waveform LFM(Linear Frequency Modulated) and designed waveform using the matched filter and the compressive sensing method. Simulation shows that the designed transmission waveform has better detection performance than the existing waveform LFM.

  • In general, a Doppler radar can measure only the velocity of a moving target. To measure the distance of a moving target, it is necessary to use a frequency-modulated continuous wave or pulse radar. However, the latter are very complex in terms of both hardware as well as signal processing. Moreover, the requirement of wide bandwidth necessitates the use of millimeter-wave frequency bands of 24 GHz and 77 GHz. Recently, a new kind of Doppler radar using multitone frequency has been studied to sense the distance of moving targets in addition to their speed. In this study, we show that distance sensing of moving targets is possible by adjusting only the frequency of a 2.4 GHz Doppler radar with low cost phase lock loop. In particular, we show that distance can be sensed using only alternating current information without direct current offset information. The proposed technology satisfies the Korean local standard for low power radio equipment for moving target identification in the 2.4 GHz frequency band, and enables multiple long-range sensing and radio-frequency identification applications.

  • Channel-based radio-frequency fingerprinting such as a channel impulse response (CIR), channel transfer function (CTF), and frequency coherence function (FCF) have been recently proposed to improve the accuracy at the physical layer; however, their empirical performance, advantages, and limitations have not been well reported. This paper provides a comprehensive empirical performance evaluation of RF location fingerprinting, focusing on a comparison of received-signal strength, CIR-, CTF-, and FCF-based fingerprinting using the weighted k-nearest neighbor pattern recognition technique. Frequency domain channel measurements in the IEEE 802.11 band taken on a university campus were used to evaluate the accuracy of the fingerprinting types and their robustness to human-induced motion perturbations of the channel. The localization performance was analyzed, and the results are described using the spatial and temporal radio propagation characteristics. In particular, we introduce the coherence region to explain the spatial properties and investigate the impact of the Doppler spread in time-varying channels on the time coherence of RF fingerprint structures.

  • A Stepped Frequency Radar(SFR) is a method of achieving high range resolution by gradually increasing the frequency of a transmitted pulse to create a wide synthetic bandwidth. However, in the case of moving target, accurate range estimation can not be performed due to the range-Doppler coupling phenomenon, so it is necessary to compensate through accurate velocity estimation. In this paper, we propose a stepped frequency radar waveform with a Coherent Pulse Train(CPT), velocity estimation results according to parameters using this method and VMD(Velocity Measurement Data) were compared and analyzed by numerical simulations.

  • As the application field of radar is expanded and the bandwidth increases, the number of radar sensors operating at the same frequency is continuously increasing. In this paper, we propose a method of analyzing interference when two pulse doppler radars are operated at the same frequency with different waveform which are designed independently. In addition, we show that even for a previously designed LFM waveforms, the interference can be suppressed without affecting the performance by changing the sign of the frequency slope by increasing/decreasing, or by modulating the pulses by the different codes. The interference suppression by different slopes is more effective for similar waveform and the suppression by the codes increases as the number of pulses increases. We expect this result can be extended to the cases where multiple radars are operated at the same frequency.

  • The design theory and experimental results of a true random noise radar system are presented in this paper. Target range information can be extracted precisely by correlation processing between the delayed reference and the signal received from a target, and the velocity information by the Doppler processing with successive correlation data. A K-band noise radar system was designed using random FM noise signal, and the characteristics of the fabricated system were examined with laboratory and outdoor experiments. A C-band random FM noise signal was generated by applying a low-frequency white Gaussian noise source to VCO(Voltage Controlled Oscillator), and a K-band Tx noise signal with 100 MHz bandwidth was obtained by using a following frequency multiplier. Two modified wave-guide horn arrays were designed and fabricated, and used for the Tx and Rx antennas. The required amount of Tx/Rx isolation was attained by using a coupling cancellation circuit as well as keeping them apart with predetermined spacing. A double down-conversion scheme was used in the Rx and reference channels, respectively, for easy post processing such as correlation and Doppler processing. The implemented noise radar performance was examined with a moving bicycle and a very high-speed target with a velocity of 150 m/s. The results extracted by the Matlab simulation using the logging data were found to be in a reasonable agreement with the expected results.

  • In this paper, it is proposed how to implement the object detection system which is able to apply to vehicular applications, unmanned facilities, automatic door and others with microwave. As the technology which detects an object with microwave is becoming more popular, it seems impossible to avoid mutual interference and jamming caused by limited frequency bandwidth. The system in this paper detects an object by correlating the code of TX and RX signals with the pseudo-random code having best quality in interference and jamming environment. In order to generate simulant doppler signal for detecting the distance of an fixed object where there is no doppler effect, the phase of TX signal is shifted continually. Also, the saturation of receiver was removed and the error of distance measurement was decreased by controlling the power of TX signal for getting constant RX signal. The proposed system detects a object which ranges from 0.5 m to 2.0 m and informs vocally whether there is the object within 1.0 m or not.

  • The infuluence of Doppler effects on the tracking performance of a noncoherent second-order delay locked loop (DLL) operating on a data modulated signal is investigated. For the perfoermance analysis we consider the tracking accuracy (steady state error and jitter) of the linear DLL and the reliability of the nonlinear loop. The nonlinear analysis concerning the loop reliability makes use of an asympototic expansion for the MTLL(mean time to lose lock) which has been derived by applying the singular perturbation method. In particular, we give optimal loop parameters and the optimal bandwidth of the bandpass filter in the loop arms to achieve a maximum MTLL. Since Doppler effects can be producesd comparatively in LEO system, we can espect the more reliable DLL loop design. by using the results of the circuit simulation, the delay lock loop is synthesized in FPGA, and verified to get the GPS data from the STR-2770 GPS simulator system. So, the synthesized logic circuit is shown be accurately performed.

  • Although conventional OFDM/QAM modulation scheme using guard interval is robust to channel induced ISI (Inter-Symbol Interference) in time-domain, it is very sensitive to ICI (Inter-Carrier Interference) due to doppler effect in frequency domain. OFDM/OQAM-IOTA modulation scheme utilizes IOTA (Isotropic Orthogonal Transform Algorithm) filter that has orthogonality in time and frequency domain so that it is robust to delay spread and doppler effect. OFDM/OQAM-IOTA system can increase bandwidth effeciency since it does not use guard interval. In this paper, we show the structure of OFDM/OQAM-IOTA and perfect channel estimation scheme for OFDM/OQAM-IOTA system. We also compare OFDM/OQAM-IOTA system and OFDM/QAM system in AWGN and 1-path Rayleigh fading channel. Simulation results show that OFDM/OQAM system outperforms OFDM/QAM system.
