Sasang-philosophy has a direct origin to Mencius, which discusses the Maeumron of Confucianism. Therefore the relationship between Maeumron of Donguisusebowon and Mencius Chapter 3 will be examined. Methods Materials and references were collected about the literature survey. Lee Je-Ma's books such as Donguisusebowon, Gyeokchigo and a book of Confucianism including the Mencius. Results and Conclusions Hoyeonjiqi in 'Sadanron' of Donguisusebowon encompasses the Qi of metaphysical personality and physiological Qi, and it can be seen that it is the Qi that fuses body and mind together. Benevolence, righteousness, propriety and wisdom are directly linked to the personal mind of Sasangin. Unlike the mencius's four clues of virtue, the Sadan is discussed in terms of the large and small organs in four constitution such sa lungs, spleen, liver, and kidneys. Next, In the relationship between Taesim of 'Whoakchungron' and greed of Mencius, if discuss a relationships between 'I understand language' and Taesim, Deceptive speech connects with the dogmatism of Soeumin, Licentious speech connects with indulgence of Taeumin, Crooked speech connects with laziness of Soyangin and Evasive speech connects with selfishness of Taeyangin. Also in the relationship between taking delight gladness without real cause idleness arrogant and Taesim, taking Delight connects with the dogmatism of Soeumin, Gladness without real cause connects with selfishness of Taeyangin, Idleness connects with laziness of Soyangin, and Arrogant connects with indulgence of Taeumin. The next thing, people of Four types of 'Gwangjeseol' coincide with Mencius. Also Love benevolence and enjoy goodness, Envy benevolence and jealous talent in the 'Gwangjeseol' are able to find the source directly in Mencius.

  • Objectives Two conflicting readings of "Donguisusebowon" so far have been presented that Sasang Constitutional Medicine inherited the traditional Five Elements theory and that it was a new perspective on its own right. The main purpose of this paper is to review the theoretical ground of Sasang Constitutional Medicine to see whether it has inherited the Traditional Korean Medicine, and show that it had been developed as an original view independent of the Five Elements theory. Methods To do this, I inquired into the theoretical background of Sasang Constitutional Medicine as well as its philosophical premises and its leading ideas. Results and Conclusions As a result, I have found that Sasang Constitutional Medicine is an original medical theory developed in empirical terms on its own right, divorced from the transcendental view of the Five Elements theory, while borrowing some concepts from I-Ching and Neo-Confucianism only for technical tools. In short, Sasang Constitutional Medicine may well be put as calling for a reappraisal of the Han-medical and Confucian accounts of human being, and a transition from speculative method based on the Five Elements theory to a verifiable empirical method. In this vein, my reading of Sasang Constitutional Medicine in empirical perspective may well be appraised as presenting a new way to further inquiries into the theoretical nature of it, and to getting itself across with Western medicine as well.

  • 1. Objectives: This study was performed to research the relationship between Sasang Constitution and characteristics of tongue diagnosis based on Donguisusebowon's Experience prescriptions(經驗方). 2. Methods: We searched tongue diagnosis factors in Donguisusebowon and classified this. Based on Donguisusebowon's Experience prescriptions(經驗方), we find tongue diagnosis factors in 6 contemporary Oriental medicine prescription books. 3. Results: Most So-eumin has white thin tongue coating and clear redish tongue color. Yellow tongue coatings are found in symptoms for Yinjinho-tang(Yinchenhao-tang), Soseungki-tang(Xiaochengqi-tang), Daeseungki-tang(Dachengqi-tang). Shortened Tongue is found in So-eumin's experience prescription and So-yangin's treat histroy. It didn't shown that So-eumin's Semen Crotonis included 6 prescritions' factors of tongue diagnosis. So-yangin's white tongue coating is found in Hyungbangpaedok-san(Jingfangbaidu-san), Sipjo-tang(Shizao-tang), Sosiho-tang(Xiaocihu-tang), Shinki-hwan(Shenqi-wan). Most of other So-yangin's tongue coatings are Yellowish and tongue color is deep red. Tae-eumin have thin white tongue coating at the Mahuang-tang(Mahuang-tang). Red tongue color and drying tongue are found at Jowiseungki-tang(Tiaoweichengqi-tang)Daesiho-tang(Dacihu-tang)Saengmaek-san(Shengmai-san) 4. Conclusions: Following So-eumin's Experience prescriptions, So-eumin's tongue color is clear red and tongue coatings are thin white and greasy. Following So-yangin's Experience prescriptions, So-yangin's tongue color is deep red and tongue coatings are yellowish and scarce except Exterior cold disease. And So-yangin has specific symptom of irritability, oral sores. Tae-eumin's tongue has two sides of white thin tongue coatings and Red and drying tongue.

  • Objectives : To examine the meaning of 'geuk(極)' and 'geuk(克)' of Cheon-gi and Insa respectively, for better translation of the contents and to understand the structure of the Donguisusebowon cosmology. Methods : The meanings of the characters '極' and '克' based on examples in the Daxue were examined together with content-related books such as the Shujing and the Shijing. Related concepts such as Taiji and Huangji were investigated as well. Results & Conclusions : Through investigation of the character usages and contexts in the Daxue, the archetypes of the two characters '極' and '克' were discovered. Based on these findings, the characteristics of Cheon-gi and Insa were thoroughly studied, which enabled better understanding of the structure of the world view that has been created by their integration. 'Geuk(極)' refers to Cheon-gi as the open world wherein all beings of different horizons are connected through a common principle. 'Geuk(克)' refers to Insa as an individual world that could be fully established by manifestation of one's moral abilities that lie within everybody. The two worlds integrate with each other, becoming two poles of the world humans belong to, while the human heart, in correspondence to these two worlds, create two poles within themselves, of which one pursues the public world while the other rejects the personal.

  • Objectives : We aimed to analyze the meanings of the energy and fluid metabolism in the Discourse on Viscera and Bowels of Donguisusebowon, and to find the clues for the explanation of the pathology and symptomatology of Taeeumin. Methods : The Discourse on Viscera and Bowels of Donguisusebowon was reviewed and examined for relevant information on the energy and fluid metabolism from the structural and the functional point of view respectively. And, based on the derived meanings of the energy and fluid metabolism, the pathology and symptomatology of Taeeumin were analyzed. Results and Conclusions : 1. The meanings of the energy and fluid metabolism can be explained by the different attributes of the energy and fluid produced from the esophagus and the small intestine, and the different function of exhaling-dispersing and inhaling-concentrating in the different tract of circulation such as Lung affiliation (esophagus, skin, ear and lung) and Liver affiliation (small intestine, flesh, nose and liver). 2. The Exterior disease of Taeeumin starts with the weakness of exhaling-dispersing function at the skin, and leads to the dysfunction of the esophagus and the lung sequently. The dysfunction of the lung aggravates that of the skin and the esophagus. 3. The Interior disease of Taeeumin begins with excess of the inhaling-concentrating functions at the flesh and the small intestine, and leads to the dysfunction of the lung, which induces the dysfunction of exhaling-concentration at the skin and esophagus. And, this disparities between exhaling-dispersing and inhaling-concentrating functions exasperate the problem at the flesh and the small intestine.

  • Objectives The purpose of this study is to understand the intention expressed as Jeubjeubhanchul(濈濈汗出) unlike the aspect of perspiration in 『Sanghanlun(傷寒論)』 and 『Donguibogam(東醫寶鑑)』. Methods We examined Sibjo-tang(十棗湯) and the aspect of perspiration focusing on the Chip(漐) and Jeub(濈) in 『Sanghanlun(傷寒論)』, 『Donguibogam(東醫寶鑑)』, and 『Donguisusebowon(東醫壽世保元)』. Moreover, we examined the connection between the quoted purpose of Sibjo-tang and the aspect of perspiration. Results and Conclusion 1. When Leejema quoted Sibjo-tang to explain the Chestbind disease(結胸) of the Soyang pattern, he used Jeubjeubhanchul (濈濈汗出) instead of Chipchiphanchul(漐漐汗出). 2. About the aspect of perspiration in 『Sanghanlun』 and 『Donguibogam』, the Chip(漐) is used in a situation when the disease progressed from Pyo(表) to Li(裏) and Taeyang-byeong(太陽病) to Yangmyung-byeong(陽明病), and it is expression of physiological perspiration. The Jeub(濈) is used in a situation related to interior(內), Li(裏), and Yangmyung-byeong. 3. Leejema understood Sibjo-tang in relation to the Chestbind disease of the Soyang pattern caused by aggravation of Liyeol (裏熱). Therefore, Leejema used the Jeub(濈) related to interior, Li and Yangmyung-byeong, and it is expression of perspiration caused by aggravation of Liyeol in the Soyang pattern. 4. At first time, Leejema mentioned perspiration and short of breath(短氣) in the symptoms of Sibjo-tang, but he mentioned dry vomiting(乾嘔) and short of breath in 『Sinchukbon(辛丑本)』. Thus, his perspective of perspiration related to Sibjo-tang was appeared in 『Gabobon(甲午本)』, and he paid attention to perspiraion as a major symptom of the Chestbind disease in the early. After clinical experience was built up, It was not that important as the past.

  • Donguisusebowon(東醫壽世保元) doesn't have pretty large quantity of contents, so indications of Four-Constitution Medicine formulas on that medical book are small. Therefore, indications of Four-Constitution Medicine formula need to be extended for broader clinical use of Four-Constitution Medicine. There would be some methods to do that, and we could review the literatures that Four-Constitution Medicine formulas are based on. We reviewed Bojungyikgi-tang on "Dongeuibogam(東醫寶鑑)", and we found that if the Four-Constitution Medicine formula is based on Sanghan formula(傷寒方) or non-classical formula(後世方), it is worth adding more indications of base formulas to those of Four-Constitution Medicine formula. For exmaple, Indications of Bojungyikgi-tang for So-Eum type could be extended by indications of non-classical formula(後世方) Bojungyikgi-tang and modified formula(加減方) Bojungyikgi-tang on Dongeuibogam, We supposed 23 indications of non-classical formula(後世方) Bojungyikgi-tang, and 20 indications of modified formula(加減方) Bojungyikgi-tang as possible indications of Bojungyikgi-tang for So-Eum type.

  • Based on the previous translation studies and "WHO-IST", we selected terminology, which are required the definition and explanation among jargon expressed in "Dongeuisusebowon Discourse on Nature and Act", and the procedure of the definition, explanation, and translation in Korean and English has been followed. The outcomes of this study are presented as below: First, based on the existing translation studies, Korean and English translation of "Dongeuisusebowon Discourse on Nature and Act" is provided. Second, few of Terminology in "Dongeuisusebowon(東醫壽世保元)" have been written in WHO-IST, even most of them have been standardized in terms of "Huang Di Nei Jing(黃帝內經)". Therefore, terminology related to Four-constitution medicine in WHO-IST would be required to be corrected, and unattatched terminology should be added in the future. Third, in order to standardize and globalize Four-constitution medicine, further definition, explanation, and translation studies of the rest of Dongeuisusebowon should be continued.

  • This paper presents a novel diagnostic method to determine Sasang Consitution (SC) by elasticity coefficient of hand dorsal skin of elderly people. For this purpose, we carried out a clinical test, in which Our SC diagnostic tool and one Oriental medical doctor with SC medicine expertise participated to categorize 458 healthy subjects into four constitutions. After excluding heavy-noise, we extracted 295 subjects' elasticity coefficient feature data and statistically analyzed their SC relevance with ANOVA test. It resulted in that, Taeum-in has high elasticity coefficient compared to Soeum-in in a significance level of 0.05. There are no differences of elasticity coefficient in genders. This result is supported by the theory of Longevity and Life Preservation in Eastern Medicine(Donguisusebowon, 동의수세보원) which suggested that Taeum-in's flesh is solid and Soeum-in's one is tender. This is the first work which reports the relatedness of skin elasticity coefficient and SC by an objective clinical test.

  • Objectives : This study aims to compare and analyze the contents and logic of Lee Jema's chest bind theory of the Soyang pattern with that of the traditional perspective since Shanghanlun, and to further investigate its underlying meaning and evaluate its value. Methods : Study chest bind related arguments of Lee through historical, demonstrative and positive investigation. First, contrast related texts starting from Shanghanlun, followed by reasoning based on general medical logic. Finally review clinical case studies from texts and papers for verification. Results : According to Lee, the key to diagnosis and treatment in preventing major chest bind which is a severe condition in the exterior cold pattern of the Soyang constitution, is to disperse fluid bind using GanSui(甘遂) in the water counterflow and vomiting(水逆嘔吐) stage prior to the major chest bind symptoms of stiffness and pain in the lower chest(心下硬痛), and reducing phlegm-rheum using DoJeokGangGiTang(導赤降氣湯) in the beginning stages of chest bind. HyeongBangDoJeokSan(荊防導赤散) is the main formula in treating phlegm-rheum, a causal factor to chest bind, modified according to the 'treat the three burners separately(三焦分治)' theory of the DaoChiSan(導赤散) section in WanBingHuiChun (萬病回春) to accomodate the Soyang constitution. Conclusions : If we follow Lee's diagnosis and treatment system on chest bind, it will allow us to diagnose chest bind in the earlier stages and secure safe treatment.
