  • Phytoplankton populations were examined at three sites in Lake Cheongpyeong, South Korea from March 2008 to December 2016, including measurement of phytoplankton communities and their dominant species, abundance and environmental factors. The annual average ranges of water temperature, dissolved oxygen and conductivity were $15.2-18.8^{\circ}C$, 10.3-12.2 mg/L, $86-140{\mu}S/cm$, respectively, with similar values at all studied sites. The highest phytoplankton cell density was observed in spring and fall, and it subsequently decreased rapidly during heavy rainfall. Diatoms were dominant in spring (mainly Stephanodiscus hantzschii, Asterionella formosa) and fall (mainly Aulacoseira granulata), while greenalgae and cyanobacteria had high appearance in early-summer and summer, respectively, indicating that water temperature is the most important factor influencing their growth. Stephanodiscus hantzschii and Asterionella formosa frequently occurred at low water temperature ($4.5-15.0^{\circ}C$ and $5.4-21.6^{\circ}C$, respectively) while Aulacoseira granulata and Anabaena spp. were favored by high water temperature (8.6-28.4 and $14.9-26.2^{\circ}C$, respectively) and phosphorus. Additionally, Fragilaria crotonensis occurred at low nutrient conditions. Rhodomonas spp. frequently appeared year-round.

  • A total of 190 phytoplankton taxa was identified in southern waters of the East Sea of Korea in May 1988, July 1989 and November 1991. Leptocylindrus danicus, Nitzschia pungens and Bacteriastrum delicatulum were the dominant species in spring. In summer, Skeletonema costatum was dominant all around the study area but Chaetoceros socialis and Rhizosolenia alata f. gracillima were locally dominant. On the other hand, the dominant species in autumn shifted to Chaeotoceros socialis, Nitzschia delicatissima, Nitzschia sp. and Gymnodinium sp. The average species diversities of the phytoplankton community were low in spring, summer and autumn, being 1.24, 1.69 and 2.12 respectively. The result of cluster analysis in summer suggested that the surface water of this study area could be divided into three phytohydrographic regions which consisted of the oceanic water region affected by Tsushima current, the east Korean neritic water region and the proper water region adjacent to Ulleung island. Compared with the surface phytohydrographic regions, one more region might be recognized at the 40m depth waters. It was appeared in the middle of study area and seemed to be affected by both Tsushima current and water mass of 10$^{\circ}C$ located deeper than 50m.

  • This study was carried out for appreciable information on the proper habitats and feeding modes of some dominant polychaetes in the continental shelf of the East Sea during April, 1985. Among 95 polychaete species, we select ed 9 dominant species in terms of their occurring frequency, abundance and population density. These are Terebellides stroemi, Chaetozone setosa, Magelona japonica, Ampharete arctica, Aglaophamus sinensis, Nothria holobranchiata, Lumbrineris japonica, Myriochele gracilis, Notoproctus pacificus. Major food item s of these species are centric diatoms and detritus. The feeding modes of the the m are mainly surtace or subsurface deposit feeding, though two specters, M.holobranchiata and L. japonica, could be assumed to be potential carnivores. To a certain degree, most deposit feeders in the coarse sediments showed selectivity in feeding and tube building. The feeding mode, gut content and the tube structure, and the distribution pattern of dominant polychaetes correspond well with the habitat tharacters, e.g.the bottom topography, the source of food and the sediment composition.

  • We studied the change of wetland vegetation structure to understand ecological restoration process of wetlands through the field survey of ecological restoration projects in Incheon, Iksan and Busan. We compared the vegetation plan at the time of planted with the results of the vegetation monitoring in 2018, and analyzed the changes in wetland vegetation structure. Based on results, we attempted to understand the restoration process of those wetlands and discuss the management measures for sustainable wetland restoration. As a result, in the Incheon Yeonhee restoration wetland, the number of plant species was increased, from 18 species in 2016 to 29 in 2018. The dominant species, Myriophyllum verticillatum, covered the wetland most and its occupied area was increased. On the other hand, the distribution area of the planted emergent hydrophytes was reduced. The area of open water decreased from 71.7% in 2016 to 48.8% in 2018. In Busan Igidae restoration wetland, the number of plant species was increased, from 6 species in 2014 to 31 in 2018. The dominant species was Myriophyllum verticillatum and its occupied area was increased. The area of floating plant communities that planned has decreased. The open water area decreased from 83.9% in 2014 to 31.8% in 2018. In Iksan Sorasan restoration wetland, the number of plant species was increased, from 13 species in 2016 to 36 in 2018. The dominant species was Phragmites communis Trin. and its occupied area was increased. The other planted species showed a tendency to be decreased by Phragmites communis Trin. and its terrestrialization. The open water area decreased from 86.6% in 2016 to 6.7% in 2018. These results suggest that wetlands should be managed by considering the change of vegetation structure and open water areas based on the following succession process, because it affects the habitat suitability of wetland organisms and biodiversity as well. Thus, the continuous monitoring for the ecological structure of restored wetland is important, and it could be possible step to develop sustainable wetland ecological restoration model.

  • We examined the species composition and community structure of demersal fish in the middle and southern coastal waters of the East Sea of Korea by surveying a commercial Danish seine fishery from 2010 to 2013. We considered the waters north of $37^{\circ}N$ as middle and those south of $37^{\circ}N$ as southern waters. A total of 79 demersal fish species belonging to 18 families were collected. Of these, 59 species (77.6%) inhabited only the East Sea as opposed to the West and South Seas of Korea, and most were resident species. The species and biomass were similar between the two portions of the study area. The sandfish Arctoscopus japonicus (78.0%) and the blackfin flounder Glyptocephalus stelleri (65.1%) were the most common species and accounted for the most biomass in the middle and southern waters, respectively. Fish were most abundant at shallow depths (50-100 m) in the middle portion of the East Sea. Using a cluster analysis, we divided the species composition and community structure at the sampling stations into three groups: middle portion (group A), deep area of the southern portion (group B), and shallow areas of the southern portion (group C). A. japonicas and G. stelleri were dominant in groups A and B, while G. stelleri and Clupea pallasii were dominant in group C.

  • Seasonal variation in species composition and abundance of fish larvae assemblages in the south-western Jinhae Bay were investigated monthly in 2009. During the study period, 49 larvae species belonging to 24 families were collected. The dominant species were Clupea pallasii, Hexagrammos otakii, Konosirus punctatus, Engraulis japonicus, Parablennius yatabei, and Omobranchus elegansei. These six species accounted for 92.7% of the total number of individuals collected. The number of species, number of individuals, and species diversity indices fluctuated with the seasons. The peak number of species and individuals occurred in July and January, respectively. Principal component analysis(PCA) and correlation analysis showed that variation in monthly water temperature could act as an indicator of seasonal variation in community structure and abundance of the dominant species; in particular, those of C. pallasii, H. otakii, E. japonicus and P. yatabei corresponded with the water temperature.
