Time Domain Analysis of Spar Platform in Waves (파랑 중 스파 플랫폼의 시간영역 해석)

  • The Spar platform with deep draft is characterized as effective structure in extreme wave condition, which has larger natural period than that of waves in sea. In this paper, the time simulation of motion responses of Spar with catenary mooring line is presented in irregular waves. The memory effect is modeled by added mass at infinite frequency and convolution integrals in terms of wave damping coefficients. The added mass, wave damping coefficients and wave exciting forces are obtained from three-dimensional panel method in the frequency domain. The motion equations are consisted of forces for inetia, memory effect, hydrostatic restoring, wave exciting and mooring line. The forces of mooring line are modeled as quasi-static catenary cable.

Low Temperature Plastic Hardening Constitutive Equation for Steels of Polar Class Vessels (빙해선박 강재의 저온 소성경화 구성방정식)

  • In this study, a plastic hardening constitutive equation for steels of polar class vessels at low temperature is proposed. The equation was derived using the experimental data obtained from tensile tests at room and low temperatures. Tensile tests at low temperature are both costly and time consuming because an expensive cold chamber is necessary and it takes too much time to cool down a specimen to set temperature. Using the proposed plastic hardening constitutive equation the plastic hardening characteristics of steels for polar class vessels at low temperature can be easily predicted from the tensile test results at room temperature.

  • As the considerable request of the fast and accurate way of the selection of circuit breaker is increased, we introduce the development of software of circuit breaker selection for the marine use. Originally, the selection of circuit breaker has been carried out by manual in the marine project. It is not the easy work to select the proper type of circuit breaker to check the time-current characteristic curves of each type of circuit breakers for the various type of loads. In this regards, we developed the software to select the proper type of circuit breaker to confirm fast and accurately. And, we introduce the course of the development of the software for the selection of circuit breaker.

  • Photoresponsive polymers are being intensely investigated over last two decades, which can be attributed to both fundamental and applied significance. Presently the attention is being directed to these materials in view of their possible application in nonlinear optics and optoelectronics.   • Container vessels are required to have a large KMT to load many containers which requires a wide transom stern form. The wide transom stern generates large stern waves particularly at the scantling draft. This means that reducing the stern wave leads to resistance reduction. Numerical analyses and Model tests for duck-tail of the stern part have been performed to reduce the resistance of the container vessel having the wide transom on the scantling draft and optimize the form of duck-tail with the change of the design parameter i.e. length and edge height. The optimized duck-tail increases the speed by 0.8 % at scantling draft.

  • Korean shipbuilders are starting to use three dimensional solid CAD systems to enhance their competitiveness in design and production. Despite many merits, three dimensional CAD systems reveal some problems in pipe-line modeling. Pipe-line modeling is heavily dependent on point data in routing. However, since the models built by sweeping or skinning operations do not have data about points and lines on the surfaces, the point data for routing are currently manually calculated by considering the diameters of the pipes and alignment conditions with other pipes. This process is inefficient and prone to errors. In order to enhance the pipe modeling, this paper presents an Offset Routing Program for a three dimensional CAD system, which aids designers to easily define the start points and to generate the pipe routings using reference objects.

On the material properties of shell plate formed by line heating

  • This paper is concerned with investigating the plastic material properties of steel plate formed by line heating method, and is aimed at implementing more rational design considering the accidental limit states such as collision or grounding. For the present study, line heating test for marine grade steel plate has been carried out with varying plate thickness and heating speed, and then microscopic examination and tensile test have been carried out. From the microscopic, it is found that the grain refined zones like ferrite and pearlite are formed all around the heat affected zone. From the tensile test results, it is seen that yield strength, tensile strength, fracture strain, hardening exponent and strength coefficient vary with plate thickness and heat input quantity. The formulae relating the material properties and heat input parameter should be, therefore, derived for the design purpose considering the accidental impact loading. This paper ends with describing the extension of the present study.

  • A lot of equipments installed in ships must be isolated for relaxing the shock, vibration and noise using the elastic mounts. Most of the elastic mounts are made of the rubber, however it is not easy to design the effective rubber mount. Because, in general, the rubber has a non-linear constitutive characteristics especially for a large deformation. So, there are many difficulties to estimate the accurate structural response of rubber which is the basis of the shape design of the mounts. In this study, the detailed non-linear viscoelastic large deformation finite element analysis method was dealt with. And to verify validity of the present analysis scheme, the results were compared with experiments.

On the structural behavior of ship's shell structures due to impact loading

  • When collision accident between ships or between ship and offshore platform occurs, a common phenomenon that occurs in structures is the plastic deformation accompanied by a large strain such as fracture. In this study, for the rational design against accidental limit state, the plastic material constants of steel plate which is heated by line heating and steel plate formed by cold bending procedure have been defined through the numerical simulation for the high speed tension test. The usefulness of the material constants included in Cowper-Symonds model and Johnson-Cook model and the assumption that strain rate can be neglected when strain rate is less than the intermediate speed are verified through free drop test as well as comparing with numerical results in several references. This paper ends with describing the future study.

  • India has occupied the most important position of sea trade in the entire South Asian region since the beginning of maritime trade. The extensive maritime trade network between the Harappan and Mesopotamian civilizations as early as the $3^{rd}$ millennium BCE is testimony to the long maritime trade history of India. The Harappans constructed many seaports including the first high-tide dockyard in the world for berthing and servicing ships at the port town of Lothal, Gujarat. From the dawn of the historical epoch, the maritime trade network of India expanded extensively. The long 5422.6 kms coastline of the Indian mainland (excluding the coastlines of the Andaman and Nicobar islands and the Lakshwadweep Islands) is well known for its several seaports manly located at river mouths or outlets to the sea. The main objective of this paper is to discuss in detail all the major ancient seaports on the eastern coast of India and their maritime trade activities. The narrative of these ports is based on archaeological explorations and excavations, foreigners' accounts, Indian literary sources, inscriptions, archival materials, and the field study and personal observation of the author.
