  • Statement of problem. In-Ceram system is one of the all-ceramic crowns that can be used in anterior 3 unit fixed partial dentures and posterior single crowns. The alumina core used in In-Ceram system is manufactured using slip-casting technique. The slip-casting technique is difficult and technique sensitive. To improve this problem, tape-casting method was introduced into dentistry. There were no studies to examine the effect of margin design on the margin fitness of all-ceramic crowns fabricated from alumina tape. Purpose. The purpose of this study was to compare the marginal fitness of glass infiltrated alumina core fabricated from aqueous-based alumina tape according to different margin types ($90^{\circ},\;110^{\circ},\;135^{\circ}$ shoulder margin). Material and method. Three upper central resin incisors were prepared with $90^{\circ},\;110^{\circ}$, and $135^{\circ}$ shoulder margins for all-ceramic crowns, respectively. The resin teeth were duplicated and master die and special plaster die were made as usual. After alumina cores were fabricated from aqueous-based alumina tape, cores were cemented to each 15 epoxy dies replicated from three resin teeth with resin cement. These cemented cores were embedded in epoxy resin. Specimens were cut mesiodistally and buccolingually. Marginal gap and discrepancy were measured under microscope. Results. The marginal gap and discrepancy of $90^{\circ}$ marginal angle was $75.1{\mu}m,\;86.6{\mu}m,\;110^{\circ}$ marginal angle was $41.5{\mu}m,\;50.7{\mu}m$ and $135^{\circ}$ marginal angle was $51.7{\mu}m,\;54.2{\mu}m$, respectively. The smallest value was seen in 110 (angle, which was statistically significant compared to that of $90^{\circ}$ angle (p<0.05). Conclusion. Marginal fitness of alumina cores made of alumina tape with $110^{\circ}$ shoulder margin was best and others were clinically acceptable.

  • This study was carried out to investigate a influence of humidity variation (%) on the magnetic properties and the surface flaws in the fabrication of Fe-based $Fe_{78}Si_9B_{13}$ amorphous alloy ribbon by Planar Flow Casting process. As a result, the size of the air pocket and the droplet which is observed in the contact surface and the free face of the amorphous alloy ribbon becomes large when the humidity increases and the size highly increases with the surface roughness at the same time. Especially, the surface roughness value which is made in the 65 % of the humidity is the lowest in the contact surface ($Ra=0.60{\mu}m$, $Rz=3.11{\mu}m$) and the free face ($Ra=0.47{\mu}m$, $Rz=3.00{\mu}m$). Also, in case of the soft magnetic property of the magnetic core which is made with the toroidal core of $23(OD)^*20(ID)^*20(H)$ size, in the sample of the amorphous alloy ribbon which is made in 65% of the humidity, the most excellent value is gained as $B_s(B_{700})=1.055T$, $H_c=0.083Oe$, permeability = 1,197 and core loss = 0.276W/kg.

  • Transparency and insolubility of eardrum patch against exudates are important for otolaryngological surgery. The author prepared silk fibroin (SF) films with various concentrations and temperature and then examined solubility and conformation of SF films. SF films were transparent regardless of the various preparation conditions. Although most SF films are soluble in 1X PBS solution at $37^{\circ}C$ for 1 h, the SF film with 3.4% with $60^{\circ}C$ was insoluble. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that the SF films have solid and smooth surface. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) results showed that the conformation of SF films was influenced by the preparation conditions including SF concentration and casting temperature. In conclusion, SF membrane with transparence and insolubility against exudates could be considered as eardrum patch resources.

  • Low pressure casting process for unidirectional carbon fiber reinforced aluminum (UD-CF/Al) composites which is an infiltration route of molten Al into porous UD-CF preform has been a cost-effective way to obtain metal matrix composites (MMCs) but, easy to cause non-uniform fiber distribution as CF clustering. Such clustered CFs have been a problem to decrease the density and thermal conductivity (TC) of composites, due to the existence of pores in the clustered area. To obtain high thermal performance composites for heat-sink application, the relationship between fiber distribution and porosity has to be clearly investigated. In this study, the CF distribution was evaluated with quantification approach by using two-dimensional spatial distribution method as local number 2-dimension (LN2D) analysis. Note that the CFs distribution in composites sensitively changed by sizes of Cu bridging particles between the CFs added in the UD-CF preform fabrication stage, and influenced on only $LN2D_{var}$ values.

  • The purpose of this paper is to propose a new type of steel reinforced concrete (SRC) beam-column joints and to examine the structural performance of the proposed joints, which simplify the construction procedure of steel fabrication, welding works, concrete casting and joint strengthening. In the proposed beam-column joints, the steel element of columns forms continuously built-in crossing of H-sections (${\Box}$), with adjacent flanges of column being connected by horizontal stiffeners in a joint at the level of the beam flanges. In addition, simplified lateral reinforcement (${\Box}$) is adopted in a joint to confine the longitudinal reinforcing bars in columns. Experimental and analytical studies have been carried out to estimate the structural performance of the proposed joints. Twelve cruciform specimens and seven SRC beam-column subassemblage specimens were prepared and tested. The following can be concluded from this study: (1) SRC subassemblages with the proposed beam-column joints show adequate seismic performances which are superior to the demand of the current code; (2) The yield and ultimate strength capacities of the beam-to-column connections can be estimated by analysis based on the yield line theory; (3) The skeleton curves and the ultimate shear capacities of the beam-column joint panel are predicted with a fair degree of accuracy by considering a simple stress transfer mechanism.

  • The plasticized polymer electrolytes based on polyvinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene (P(VdF-co-HFP)), tetra (ethylene glycol) dimethyl ether (TEGDME), and lithium perchlorate ($LiClO_4$) are prepared for the lithium sulfur batteries by solution casting with a doctor-blade. The polymer electrolyte with EO : Li ratio of 16 : 1 shows the maximum ionic conductivity, $6.5\;{\times}\;10^{-4}\;S/cm$ at room temperature. To understand the effect of the salt concentration on the electrochemical performance, the polymer electrolytes are characterized using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), infrared spectroscopy (IR), viscometer, and differential scanning calorimeter (DSC). The optimum concentration and mobility of the charge carriers could lead to enhance the utilization of sulfur active materials and the cyclability of the Li/S unit cell.

  • ZTA tubes were prepared by centrifugal casting and sintered at $1600^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs. The ZTA tubes were machined into specimens of $3{\times}4{\times}40$ mm. Molten Soda lime glass (SLG) was penetrated into the surface of ZTA at an optimized condition of $1500^{\circ}C$ for the holding time of 5 h and furnace cooled. The extra glass on the surface was removed using a resin bonded diamond wheel. The glass penetrated samples were tested for their flexural strength using four point bend test. Vickers Indentation cracks were made on the glass penetrated surface at different loads of 9.8 N, 49 N, 98 N and 196 N. The residual compression on the surface enhanced the flexural strength and crack arrest behaviour remarkably. This was attributed to the thermoelastic mismatch between the glass and ZTA matrix during cooling.

  • LSGM(($La_xSr_{1-x})(Ga_yMg_{1-y})O_3$) electrolyte is known to show very serious interfacial reaction with other unit cell components, especially with an anode. Such an interfacial reaction induced the phase instability of constituent component and deterioration of the unit cell performance, which become the most challenging issues in LSGM-based SOFCs. In this study, we fabricated LSGM($La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}Ga_{0.83}Mg_{0.17}O_x$) electrolyte supported-type cell in order to avoid such interfacial problem by lowering the heat-treatment temperature of the electrode fabrication. According to the microstructural and phase analysis, there was no serious interfacial reaction at both electrolyte/anode and electrolyte/cathode interfaces. Moreover, from the electrochemical characterization of the unit cell performance, there was no distinct deterioration of the open cell voltage as well as an internal cell resistance. These results demonstrate the most critical point to be concerned in LSGM-based SOFC is either to find a proper electrode material which will not give any interfacial reaction with LSGM electrolyte or to properly adjust the processing variables for unit cell fabrication, to reduce the interfacial reaction.
