  • AT-DMB system has been developed to increase data rate up to double of conventional T-DMB in the same bandwidth while maintaining backward compatibility. The AT-DMB system adopted hierarchical modulation which adds BPSK or QPSK signal as enhancement layer to existing DQPSK signal. The enhancement layer signal should be small enough to maintain backward compatibility and to minimize the coverage loss of conventional T-DMB service coverage. But this causes the enhancement layer signal of AT-DMB susceptible to fading effect in transmission channel. A turbo code which has improved error correction capability than convolutional code, is applied to the enhancement layer signal of the AT-DMB system for compensating channel distortion. However there is a need for other solutions for better reception of AT-DMB signal in receiver side without increasing transmitting power. In this paper, we propose adaptive array antenna system with Eigen-space beamforming algorithm which benefits beamforming gain along with diversity gain. We analyzed the reception performances of AT-DMB system in indoor and mobile environments when this new smart antenna system and algorithm is introduced. The computer simulation results are presented along with analysis comments.

  • In this paper, we present a new beamforming scheme for a downlink of multiuser multiple-input multipleoutput (MIMO) communication systems. Recently, a block-diagonalization (BD) algorithm has been proposed for the multiuser MIMO downlink where both a base station and each user have multiple antennas. However, the BD algorithm is not efficient when the number of supported streams per user is smaller than that of receive antennas. Since the BD method utilizes the space based on the channel matrix without considering the receive combining, the degree of freedom for beamforming cannot be fully exploited at the transmitter. In this paper, we optimize the receive beamforming vector under a zero forcing (ZF) constraint, where all inter-user interference is driven to zero. We propose an efficient algorithm to find the optimum receive vector by an iterative procedure. The proposed algorithm requires two phase values feedforward information for the receive combining vector. Also, we present another algorithm which needs only one phase value by using a decomposition of the complex general unitary matrix. Simulation results show that the proposed beamforming scheme outperforms the conventional BD algorithm in terms of error probability and obtains the diversity enhancement by utilizing the degree of freedom at the base station.

  • This paper introduces the downlink Eigen-beamformer with Space-Time Block Code (STBC) 〔1,2〕employed on the MISO (Multiple Input Multiple Output) systems. The proposed scheme is acquired both transmit diversity gain from STBC and beamforming gain from Eigen-beamformer. In general, it is well described that the diversity gain be maximized when channel parameters associated to fingers are mutually independent. Major role f utilizing Eigen-beamformer is to enforce channel parameters being uncorrelated. According to this, the proposed STBC combined with Eigen-beamformer on the downlink significantly improves its performance under the spatially correlated channel. Simulation results are accomplished under three distinct channel conditioned with varying the degree of their correlations. The result indicates hat our proposed scheme is good performance in spatially correlated channel.

  • The underwater acoustic communication (UAC) is characterized by doubly spread channel. It is included in the time-variant doppler shift and delay-time spreads due to multiple paths. To compensate such distorted signals, various techniques including time-reversal processing, spatial diversity, phase estimator, and equalizer are being applied. In this paper, a spatial filter based on the beamforming is proposed as a method to mitigate such inter-symbol interferences that are generated in time-varying multipath channels. The proposed technique realizes coherent communications by steering the direction of the desired signals and improves the performance of UAC by increasing the signal-to-interference plus noise ratio using the array gain.

  • How to determine the right number of small base stations to activate in multi-cell uplinks to match traffic from a fixed quantity of K users is an open question. This paper analyses the uplink cooperative that jointly receives base stations activation to explore this question. This paper is different from existing works only consider transmitting power as optimization objective function. The global objective function is formulated as a summation of two terms: transmitting power for data and coordinated overhead for control. Then, the joint base stations activation and beamforming problem is formulated as a mixed integer second order cone optimization. To solve this problem, we develop two polynomial-time distributed methods. Method one is a two-stage solution which activates no more than K small base stations (SBSs). Method two is a heuristic algorithm by dual decomposition to MI-SOCP that activates more SBSs to obtain multiple-antennae diversity gains. Thanks to the parallel computation for each node, our methods are more computationally efficient. The strengths and weaknesses of these two proposed two algorithms are also compared using numerical results.

  • Due to the difficulty of coordination in the cellular uplink, it is a practical challenge how to achieve the optimal throughput scaling with distributed scheduling. In this paper, we propose a distributed and opportunistic user scheduling (DOUS) that achieves the optimal throughput scaling in a single-input multiple-output interfering multiple-access channel, i.e., a multi-cell uplink network, with M antennas at each base station (BS) and N users in a cell. In a distributed fashion, each BS adopts M random receive beamforming vectors and then selects M users such that both sufficiently large desired signal power and sufficiently small generating interference are guaranteed. As a main result, it is proved that full multiuser diversity gain can be achieved in each cell when a sufficiently large number of users exist. Numerical evaluation confirms that in a practical setting of the multi-cell network, the proposed DOUS outperforms the existing distributed user scheduling algorithms in terms of sum-rate.

  • In this paper, we consider the use of orthogonal multiple beams (OMBs) to simultaneously achieve multi-user diversity and multiplexing gain in a packet-based wireless system. Previous OMB scheme considers the use of a fixed number of multiple beams equal to the number of transmit antennas. However, unless the number of active users is sufficiently large, the use of a fixed number of multiple beams may not provide desired performance due to the interference signal transmitted through other beams, being even worse than the use of a single beam. To alleviate this problem, we consider the adjustment of the number of beams in use to maximize the spectral efficiency according to the operating condition. Simulation results show the validity of the proposed scheme.

  • In the multi-user multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) system, orthogonal random beamforming (ORBF) scheme is proposed to serve multiple users simultaneously in order to achieve the multi-user diversity gain. The opportunistic space-division multiple access system (OSDMA-S) scheme performs multiple weighting matrices during the training phase and chooses the best weighting matrix to be used to broadcast data during the transmitting phase. The OSDMA-S scheme works better than the original ORBF by decreasing the inter-user interference during the transmitting phase. To save more time in the training phase, a partly random multiple weighting matrices selection scheme is proposed in this paper. In our proposed scheme, the Base Station does not need to use several unitary matrices to broadcast pilot symbol. Actually, only one broadcasting operation is needed. Each subscriber generates several virtual equivalent channels with a set of pre-saved unitary matrices and the channel status information gained from the broadcasting operation. The signal-to-interference and noise ratio (SINR) of each beam in each virtual equivalent channel is calculated and fed back to the base station for the weighting matrix selection and multi-user scheduling. According to the theoretical analysis, the proposed scheme relatively expands the transmitting phase and reduces the interactive complexity between the Base Station and subscribers. The asymptotic analysis and the simulation results show that the proposed scheme improves the throughput performance of the multi-user MIMO system.

  • Suitable for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) communications, the joint beamforming space-time block coding (JBSTBC) scheme is proposed for high-speed downlink transmission. The major functionality of the scheme entails space-time block encoder and joint transmit and receive eigen-beamformer (EBF) incorporating with block-ordered layered decoder (BOLD), and its operating principle is described in this paper. Within these functionalities, the joint EBFs will be utilized for decorrelating fading channels to cause an enhancement in the spatial diversity gain. Furthermore, to fortify the capability of layered successive interference cancellation (LSIC) in block-ordered layered decoding process, this paper will develop a simple ad-hoc transmit power discrimination scheme (TPDS) based on a particular power discrimination function (PDF). To confirm the superior behavior of the proposed JBSTBC scheme employing ad-hoc TPDS, computer simulations will be conducted under various channel conditions with the provision of detailed mathematical derivations for clarifying its functionality.

  • In this paper, we provide an efficient method of user selection for achieving the maximum system throughput in downlink multiuser Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems. A proposed method is for selecting a fine user set only with powers of each user channel and angles between them. This algorithm is simpler than SUS because there is no considering about the optimal value of correlation. The proposed method finds the user set toward maximizing system throughput, so it has high performance.
