  • Purpose: This study was a qualitative research study in which focus group interviews were used to collect data on the meaning of respite for family caregivers who are taking care of elders with dementia. Methods: The focus group interviews and participants consisted of 2 family caregiver groups, for a total of 8 people taking care of their elders and 5 professional caregivers working in a geriatrics hospital or social welfare institutions. Content analysis was used and debriefing notes were referred in order to analyze the data. Results: The meaning of respite in this research was measured using 4 main categories: 'Temporary break from routine', 'direct help', 'psychological comfort', 'valuables which cannot be taken easily' and 9 subcategories: 'Temporary diversion of attention', 'temporarily free from my duty', 'taking care of oneself', 'receiving economic help', 'empathize with others', 'comfort based on trust', 'resting together with the elder', 'no time to rest', 'cannot get out of one's obligatory duty'. Conclusion: The findings of the study show that rest means not only a temporary relief from caretaking, but also a real respite based on the patients' stable state and comfort. These results indicate a new meaning for respite, that the first step of respite program has to begin even when the caregivers do not recognize the need for respite.

  • This study investigated spalling prevention and fire resistance properties of the high strength concrete using pre-mixed cement containing fiber to prepare the method for the effective throwing of hybrid fiber. For result of a fire test, almost specimens were protected from fire except 15% of W/C. Totally, the pre-mixed cement containing fiber was favorable compared with passive mixing method for the spalling prevention. It is more effective to prevent spalling caused by fine diversion of fiber even in high strength concrete because it contained many corporate materials. Moreover, the temperature history of the side steel bar on the column test with pre-mixed cement containing fiber did not over 538$^{\circ}C$ which is the average for the standard of fire resistance performance.

  • The water demand has been rapidly increased by the growth of population, industrialization, unbanization, water pollution and so on. This study carried out the seasonal pre-reserved planning for the five zones, comparing the water demand with the available water resources up to the goal year, 2001. The results of this study are as follows; 1) It is principle that the monthly water demand is supplied by the surface and ground water as the increasing tendency of it, and the deficit of water is supplemented by the water supplying capacity of dam. And water demand should be completely reserved before supplying the deficit of water. 2) The monthly and seasonal maximum deficit of water demand take place in June and summer. 3) The periods when the deficit of water demand exceeds the water supplying capacity of dam are 1984-1990, 1994-2001 in zone III. 4) To reserve the deficit of water demand in zone III, we would like to pre-construct Masan-Keumbo estuary barrage from 2001 to 1991 in Seomjin river basin, the deficit of water demand is supplied by the diversion of water from Yeongsan river basin with the developments of the ground water and small reservoirs until 1986.

  • Recently, a heavy rainfall under climate change causes the flood exceeded river's conveyance. Flood control methods under the limited river width are the increase of embankment, the construction of storage pockets and diversion channel, the dredging of river bed. Hwasun flood control reservoir of washland is designed as the storage pockets and the regulating gate for the control of water level. In this study, the propriety of design was investigated through hydraulic experiments for the circumstances to exclude the constant flood discharge during operation period. In the results, the over flow rate of side weir exceeded the flow of design and indicated to be able to discharge the designed flow in the regulating gate opened 1.1 m. The high velocity 7.1 m/s behind the gate has investigated to reduce under 3.3 m/s by the baffle block.

  • Throughout much of the world, many ecological problems have arisen in watersheds where a significant portion of stream flows are diverted to support agriculture production. Within endorheic watersheds (watersheds whose terminus is a terminal lake) these problems are magnified due to the cumulative effect that reduced stream flows have on the condition of the lake at the stream's terminus. Within an endorheic watershed, any diversion of stream flows will cause an imbalance in the terminal lake's water balance, causing the lake to transition to a new equilibrium level that has a smaller volume and surface area. However, the total mass of Total Dissolved Solids within the lake will continue to grow; resulting in a significant increase in the lake's TDS concentration over time. The ecological consequences of increased TDS concentrations can be as limited as the intermittent disruption of productive fisheries, or as drastic as a complete collapse of a lake's ecosystem. A watershed where increasing TDS concentrations have reached critical levels is the Walker Lake watershed, located on the eastern slope of the central Sierra Nevada range in Nevada, USA. The watershed has an area of 10,400 sq. km, with average annual headwater flows and stream flow diversions of 376 million $m^3/yr$ and 370 million $m^3/yr$, respectively. These diversions have resulted in the volume of Walker Lake decreasing from 11.1 billion m3 in 1882 to less than 2.0 billion $m^3$ at the present time. The resulting rise in TDS concentration has been from 2,560 mg/l in 1882 to nearly 15,000 mg/l at the current time. Changes in water management practices over the last century, as well as climate change, have contributed to this problem in varying degrees. These changes include the construction of reservoirs in the 1920s, the pumpage of shallow groundwater for irrigation in the 1960s and the implementation of high efficiency agricultural practices in the 1980s. This paper will examine the impacts that each of these actions, along with changes in the region's climate, has had on stream flow in the Walker River, and ultimately the TDS concentration in Walker Lake.

  • After the heavy precipitation from April 1969 to September 1970, more than 1.359 10$\^$6/㎥ of fresh water was discharged through diversion channel of the Namgang Dam. The sands and muds in the northern Sachon Bay were moved and swept away by the strong southsard flow which was observed to be speedier than five knots. The shellfish culture facility as well as the oysters and bivalves were buried. In Sachon Bay, a southward surface ebb current of approximately one knot stratifies above the northward flow of approximately 0.5 knot, which seems to be similar to the salt wedge estuary. The stratified current is responsible for the breaking of the gill nets and other fishing gears. The salinity of sea water in Chinju Bay decreased remarkably and the abnormal low salinity water lower than 5 was distributed in Sachon Bay. The low salinity water front was observed in eastern Chinju Bay and the Samchonpo Channel, where the salinity was increased from 4.6 to approximately 30 within half a tidal cycle. These caused the oysters and bivalves die, and drove anchovies and octopus out to the sea and prevented them from approaching the bay. The decrease of salinity causes the decrease of density and osmotic pressure of sea water. Turbid water would prevent the sunlight from penetrate into deep layer.

  • The objective of this study is to evaluate traffic management strategies using Variable Message Signs(MCS) on urban freeways. It is well known that real-time information on traffic conditions increases driver's comfort, and reduces the risks of accidents if drivers are aware of the traffic situation in advance, they decide whether to divert from the freeway or continue on the planned route. The experimental data collected on the Olympic highway we have shown the following results : 1. when the information on both the congested freeway and uncontested diversion route is displayed on the variable message sign. an additional 1.7 percent of traffic diverted, which results in a 3.7 percent reduction in total travel time. 2 Compared with one Proposed VMS message of 'reduce the speed', the other Proposed VMS message of 'keep speed 70km/h' is found to be much more effective in reducing mean speed.

  • The stability and safety of concrete plug structure of diversion tunnel is crucial for the impoundment of upstream reservoir in hydropower projects. The ongoing Wudongde hydropower plant in China plans to adopt straight column plugs and curved column plugs to replace the traditional expanded wedge-shaped plugs. The performance of the proposed new plug structures under high water head is then a critical issue and attracts the attentions of engineers. This paper firstly studied the joint bearing mechanism of plug and surrounding rock mass and found that the quality and mechanical properties of the interfaces among plug concrete, shotcrete, and surrounding rock mass play a key role in the performance of plug structures. By performing geophysical and mechanical experiments, the contact state and the mechanical parameters of the interfaces were analyzed in detail and provide numerical analysis with rational input parameters. The safety evaluation is carried out through numerical calculation of plug stability under both construction and operation period. The results indicate that the allowable water head acting on columnar plugs is 3.1 to 7.4 times of the designed water head. So the stability of the new plug structure meets the design code requirement. Based on above findings, it is concluded that for the studied project, it is feasible to adopt columnar plugs to replace the traditional expanded wedge-shaped plugs. It is hoped that this study can provide reference for other projects with similar engineering background and problems.
