The use of frequency-dependent spectral element matrix (or exact dynamic stiffness matrix) in structural dynamics is known to provide very accurate solutions, while reducing the number of degrees-of-freedom to resolve the computational and cost problems. Thus, in the present paper, the spectral element model is formulated for the axially moving Timoshenko beam under a uniform axial tension. The high accuracy of the present spectral element is then verified by comparing its solutions with the conventional finite element solutions and exact analytical solutions. The effects of the moving speed and axial tension on the vibration characteristics, the dispersion relation, and the stability of a moving Timoshenko beam are investigated, analytically and numerically.

The best simulation condition for the fiber collimator that uses ball lenses was investigated. This kind of fiber collimator can be used in a Micro-Optical-Cross-Connects(MOXC). MOXC is composed of collimating ball lenses, micro mirrors and single-mode fibers. In order to design a MOXC, it is very important to calculate beam path, beam radius, divergence angle that determines the insertion loss of the MOXC. Since the beam profile from the fiber facet is not exact Gaussian profile, it was found that the simulation condition in which beam waist exists on the fiber facet, ignoring Numerical Aperture(NA), gives best agreement with the experimental results. Beam radii were measured with conventional knife edge method.

A new ion source has been designed, fabricated, and installed at the NBTS (Neutral Beam Test Stand) at the KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) site. The goalis to provide a 100 keV, 2MW deuterium neutral beam injection as an auxiliary heating of KSTAR (Korea Super Tokamak Advanced Research). To cope with power demand, an ion current of 50 A is required considering the beam power loss and neutralization efficiency. The new ion source consists of a magnetic cusp bucket plasma generator and a set of tetrode accelerators with circular copper apertures. The plasma generator for the new ion source has the same design concept as the modified JAEA multi-cusp plasma generator for the KSTAR prototype ion source. The dimensions of the plasma generator are a cross section of $59{\times}25cm^2$ with a 32.5 cm depth. The anode has azimuthal arrays of Nd-Fe permanent magnets (3.4 kG at surface) in the bucket and an electron dump, which makes 9 cusp lines including the electron dump. The discharge properties were investigated preliminarily to enhance the efficiency of the beam extraction. The discharge of the new ion source was mainly controlled by a constant power mode of operation. The discharge of the plasma generator was initiated by the support of primary electrons emitted from the cathode, consisting of 12 tungsten filaments with a hair-pin type (diameter = 2.0 mm). The arc discharge of the new ion source was achieved easily up to an arc power of 80 kW (80 V/1000 A) with hydrogen gas. The 80 kW capacity seems sufficient for the arc power supply to attain the goal of arc efficiency (beam extracted current/discharge input power = 0.8 A/kW). The accelerator of the new ion source consists of four grids: plasma grid (G1), gradient grid (G2), suppressor grid (G3), and ground grid (G4). Each grid has 280 EA circular apertures. The performance tests of the new ion source accelerator were also finished including accelerator conditioning. A hydrogen ion beam was successfully extracted up to 100 keV /60 A. The optimum perveance is defined where the beam divergence is at a minimum was also investigated experimentally. The optimum hydrogen beam perveance is over $2.3{\mu}P$ at 60 keV, and the beam divergence angle is below $1.0^{\circ}$. Thus, the new ion source is expected to be capable of extracting more than a 5 MW deuterium ion beam power at 100 keV. This ion source can deliver ~2 MW of neutral beam power to KSTAR tokamak plasma for the 2012 campaign.
The operational characteristics of the duoplasmatron ion source are investigated in order to obtain the maximum achievable extraction current of the $He^+$ ion beam with the small divergence. Under the variations of the gas pressure, the arc current, the magnet current and the extraction voltage of the ion source, the change of the extracted $He^+$ ion beam current is observed. An oxide filament, the mixture of BaO and SrO coated on Ni meshes, is used as the hot cathode, and its average lifetime is about 100 hours. The extraction current is linearly proportional to the arc current. As the magnet current of the ion source is increased, the extraction current increases, but the beam divergence becomes larger. The maximum extraction current is obtained at the source pressure of 0.084 Torr. The extraction current is proportional to the extraction voltage raised to the power of 3/2 as estimated from theory. At the extraction voltage of 5.72 kV, the maximum extraction current of 50 $\mu$A is obtained under the optimized extraction condition.
The LIDAR data can be efficiently utilized for automatic reconstruction of 3D models of objects on the terrain and the terrain itself. In this paper, we attempted to generate simulated waveforms of FW (Full-Waveform) LIDAR (LIght Detection And Ranging). We performed the geometric modeling of the sensor and objects, and the radiometric modeling of the waveform intensity. First, we compute the origins and directions of the sub-beams by considering the divergence effects of a laser beam. We then searched for the locations at which the sub-beams intersected with the objects, such as ground, buildings and trees. Finally, we generate the individual waveforms of the reflected sub-beams and the waveform of the entire beam by summing the individual ones. With the experimental results, we confirmed the waveforms were reasonably generated, showing the characteristics of the surfaces the beam interacted with.
The allowable path-deviation time of aircraft in a free-space optical communication system has been estimated from various trajectories, using different values of aircraft speeds and turn rates. We assumed the existence of a link between the aircraft and a ground base station. First, the transmitter beam's divergence angle was calculated through two different approaches, one based on a simple optical-link equation, and the other based on an attenuation coefficient. From the calculations, the discrepancy between the two approaches was negligible when the link distance was approximately 110 km, and was under 5% when the link distance ranged from 80 to 140 km. Subsequently, the allowable path-deviation time of the aircraft within the tracking-error tolerance of the system was estimated, using different aircraft speeds, turn rates, and link distances. The results indicated that the allowable path-deviation time was primarily determined by the aircraft's speed and turn rate. For example, the allowable path-deviation time was estimated to be ~3.5 s for an aircraft speed of 166.68 km/h, a turn rate of $90^{\circ}/min$, and a link distance of 100 km. Furthermore, for a constant aircraft speed and turn rate, the path-deviation time was observed to be almost unchanged when the link distance ranged from 80 to 140 km.
The spectral element model is known to provide very accurate structural dynamic characteristics, while reducing the number of degree-of-freedom to resolve the computational and cost problems. Thus, the spectral element model for an axially moving Bernoulli-Euler beam subjected to axial tension is developed in the present paper. The high accuracy of the spectral element model is then verified by comparing its solutions with the conventional finite element solutions and exact analytical solutions. The effects of the moving speed and axial tension on the vibration characteristics, wave characteristics, and the static and dynamic stabilities of a moving beam are investigated.

In this paper, the purpose is to investigate the stability of cracked Timoshenko cantilever beams subjected to subtangential follower force. In addition, an analysis of the instability(critical follower force of flutter and divergence) of a cracked beam as slenderness ratio and subtangential coefficient is investigated. The governing differential equations of a Timoshenko beam subjected to an end tangential follower force is derived via Hamilton's principle. The crack is assumed to be in the first mode of fracture and to be always opened during the vibrations. The results of this study will contribute to the safety test and stability estimation of structures of a cracked beam subjected to subtangential follower force.

For a shear-deformable beam-column element subjected io non-conservative forces, equations of motion and a finite element formulation are presented applying extended Hamilton's principle. The influence of non-conservative force's direction parameter, internal and external damping forces, and shear deformation and rotary inertia effects on divergence and flutter loads of Beck's columns are intensively investigated based on element stiffness, damping and mass matrixes derived for the non-conservative system.
