  • Objectives: The objective of this study is to review the diagnostic methods of neurologic symptoms by non-organic causes. Methods: We experienced a case of a motor and sensory disturbance patient without abnormal findings in the diagnostic tests. Using this process, we became aware that it is important to remember some of the methods when treating patients who are suspicious of neurologic symptoms by non-organic causes. Results: First, we should perform a variety of diagnostic tests to exclude the organic causes. Second, we should persistently observe a consistency of the patient's symptoms and attitude. Finally, we should perform a neurological examination in order to acquire the objective physical findings. Conclusions: Because there are limitations in the methods above, we have to be aware of making a mistake regarding the disability by organic causes as that by non-organic causes.

  • As the first step of the real time monitoring system of the solar radio disturbance, we constructed the control system of the solar radio telescope. An 1.8m antenna built by Korean Astronomy Observatory has been used, and the observed radio flux is transformed to the digital signal by the powermeter. We have also developed a computer program CBNUART in order to control the telescope system and the powermeter. As the sun rises, the telescope begins to observe the sun, and ends the observation automatically at sunset. The CBNUART enables the telescope automatically to go to the position of the sunrise for the beginning the observation and come back to the setposition after the ending the observation at the sunset. An active tracking routine is adopted in order to improve the tracking accuracy of the control system, and we used an optical telescope equipped in front of the antenna for control test. The tracking test shows that our control system can track with the accuracy of arc seconds, and the 50 minute pointing test shows that the pointing accuracy of right ascension and declination are 1.12 and 0.08 arc minutes respectively.

  • This paper presents a new neural network control for nonlinear bridge systems with earthquake excitation. We design multi-layer neural network controllers with a single hidden layer. The selection of an optimal number of neurons in the hidden layer is an important design step for control performance. To select an optimal number of hidden neurons, we progressively add one hidden neuron and observe the change in a performance measure given by the weighted sum of the system error and the control force. The number of hidden neurons which minimizes the performance measure is selected for implementation. A neural network was trained for mitigating vibrations of bridge systems caused by El Centro earthquake. We applied the proposed control approach to a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) and a two-degree-of-freedom (TDOF) bridge system. We assessed the robustness of the control system using randomly generated earthquake excitations which were not used in training the neural network. Our results show that the neural network controller drastically mitigates the effect of the disturbance.

  • Korea space weather prediction center (KSWPC) in Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute (KASI) has been constructing several facilities to observe mid- to low-latitude upper atmospheric/ionospheric phenomena; VHF coherent scattering radar, All-sky Imager, and Scintmon. Those new ionospheric facilities can be integrated to produce more reliable space weather forecast and nowcast with the existing facilities; Solar Flare Telescope (SOFT), Solar Optical Observatory's sunspot telescope and solar imaging spectrograph, and Magnetometer. The specification of KASI VHF coherent scattering radar is 40.8 MHz of target frequency, 200 kHz of bandwidth, 24 kW of peak power. The science goal of this radar is to measure the irregularities in E- and F-layers over Korea, especially sporadic-E, spread-F, and traveling ionospheric disturbance (TID). The radar will be installed at Gyerong in a territory of Korean Air force by early 2009.

  • Patients with cerebellar infarction often complain of many symptom-vertigo, gait disturbance, nausea, vomiting. Especially, Vertigo is the main symptom, and patients cannot achieve normal activity in daily life. When we prescribed Banhabakchulchunma-tang and Gastrodiae Rhizoma extract to a 61year-old female stroke patient with vertigo, we could observe that the symptom was improved rapidly after treatment. Therefore we suggest that Banhabakchulchunma-tang which increase Chunma in quantity is very useful for vertigo after stroke. Further case studies of herbal treatment of this ailment are needed.

  • This experimental study concerns the characteristics of a helical flow in a concentric annulus with a diameter ratio of 0.52, whose outer cylinder is stationary and inner one is rotating. The pressure losses and skin friction coefficients have been measured for the fully developed flow of Non-Newtonian fluid, aqueous solution of sodium carbomethyl cellulose (CMC) and bentonite with inner cylinder rotational speed of 0~400 prm. Also, the visualization of helical flows has been performed to observe the unstable waves. The results of present study reveal the relation of the Reynolds number Re and Rossby number Ro with respect to the skin friction coefficients. In somehow, they show the existence of flow instability mechanism. The pressure losses increase as the rotational speed increases, but the gradient of pressure losses decreases as the Reynolds number increases in the regime of transition and turbulence. And the increase of flow disturbance by Taylor vortex in a concentric annulus with rotating inner cylinder results in the decrease of the critical Reynolds number with the increase of skin friction coefficient.

  • Aging effect of sands showed insignificant result in comparison with that of clay, so that it has not been studied so far. But, as penetration resistance increase has been observed with the lapse of time after deposition and disturbance, aging effect of sands has been actively investigated by field tests, and recently many researchers are performing not oかy field tests but also laboratory tests on sands, so aging effects of sands have been also examined by laboratory tests. In this study, to observe the aging effect of undrained static shear behavior for Nak-Dong River sand, undrained static triaxial tests were performed with changing relative density$(D_r)$, consolidation stress ratio$(K_c)$, and consolidation time. These tests showed that modulus within elastic section increased as consolidation time increased, and in addition, phase transformation point strength$(S_{PT})$ and critical stress ratio point strength $(S_{CSR})$ also increased. But pore water pressure ratio$(u/{p_c}')$ decreased as consolidation time increased, so with this various result, aging effect of static shear for sands can be observed as well.

  • The burned pine forest may change into the grassland with bushes. However, it is likely that forest insects immigrated from the adjacent forest may be temporally abundant in the burned forest. This study was conducted to observe the immigration of insects for a year since forest fire. Beetle fauna in burned forest was compared with that in unburned forest in Goseong in Gwangwon province where the big fire was occurred and burned 3,762 ha of forest in 1996. The 381 individuals of 60 beetle species was collected from the burned forest, whereas the 370 individuals of 63 beetle species from the unburned forest. There was no difference in abundance and species richness of beetle fauna between burned forest and unburned forest. Most of abundant beetle species were collected from burned forest as well as unburned forest. Seasonal occurrence of the insects in burned forest were similar to those in unburned forest. These indicate active immigration of insects in burned forest in early season after fire. The beetles dwelling on vegetation were more actively immigrated into burned forest compared with those foraging in ground.

  • Ionic Transition Metal Complex based (iTMC) Light-emitting electrochemical cells (LEECs) have been drawn attention for cheap and easy-to-fabricate light-emitting device. LEEC is one of the promising candidate for next generation display and solid-state lighting applications which can cover the defects of current commercial OLEDs like complicated fabrication process and strong work-function dependent sturucture. We have investigated the performance characteristics of LEECs based on poly (3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly (styrene sulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS)-incorporated transition metal complex, which is tris(2, 2'-bipyridyl)ruthenium(II) hexafluorophosphate in this study. There are advantages using conductive polymer-incorporated luminous layer to prevent light disturbance and absorbance while light-emitting process between light-emitting layer and transparent electrode like ITO. The devices were fabricated as sandwiched structure and light-emitting layer was deposited approximately 40nm thickness by spin coating and aluminum electrode was deposited using thermal evaporation process under the vacuum condition (10-3Pa). Current density and light intensity were measured using optical spectrometer, and surface morphology changes of the luminous layer were observed using XRD and AFM varying contents of PEDOT:PSS in the Ruthenium(II) complex solution. To observe enhanced ionic conductivity of PEDOT:PSS and luminous layer, space-charge-limited-currents model was introduced and it showed that the performances and stability of LEECs were improved. Main discussions are the followings. First, relationship between film thickness and performance characteristics of device was considered. Secondly, light-emitting behavior when PEDOT:PSS layer on the ITO, as a buffer, was introduced to iTMC LEECs. Finally, electrical properties including carrier mobility, current density-voltage, light intensity-voltage, response time and turn-on voltages were investigated.
