Mobile Sensor Networks (MSN) is composed of a distributed collection of mobile sensor nodes, each of which has sensing, computation, communication and locomotion capabilities. Since the routing path can be broken when some nodes on the path move to other position, MSN may have a high rate of communication failure. So, MSN has to provide a means for low-cost and low-power routing to support mobility of sensor nodes. In this paper, a limited flooding scheme for routing in MSN is proposed to allow efficient energy utilization without requiring any complicated tasks for path maintenance.

In this paper a scalable QoS routing scheme for distributed multimedia applications in a hierarchical wide area network is proposed. The problem of QoS routing is formulated as a multicriteria shortest path problem, known as NP-complete. The proposed hierarchical routing scheme consists of two phases. In Phase 1, every border node periodically pre-computes the QoS distance for the paths between every pair of border nodes in any level of domain hierarchy. This phase is independet of the QoS request from an application. In Phase II, distributed graph construction algorithm is performed to model the network as a graph by retrieving pre-computed QoS distances. The graph is constructed by the on-demand algorithm and contains a part of the network topology which is completely neglected or partially considered by existing routing schemes, thus maintaining more accurate topology information. By using retrieval approach rather than advertising one, no global QoS state information exchange among nodes is needed. In this Phase, distributed partition algorithm for QoS routing problem is also performed, thus eliminating virtual links on the hierarchically complete path.
We study the routing problem in all-wireless networks based on cooperative transmissions. We model the minimum-energy cooperative path (MECP) problem and prove that this problem is NP-complete. We hence design an approximation algorithm called cooperative shortest path (CSP) algorithm that uses Dijkstra's algorithm as the basic building block and utilizes cooperative transmissions in the relaxation procedure. Compared with traditional non-cooperative shortest path algorithms, the CSP algorithm can achieve a higher energy saving and better balanced energy consumption among network nodes, especially when the network is in large scale. The nice features lead to a unique, scalable routing scheme that changes the high network density from the curse of congestion to the blessing of cooperative transmissions.
In this paper, we propose a framework to study how to route packets efficiently in multipath communication networks. Two traffic congestion control techniques, namely, flow assignment and packet scheduling, have been investigated. The flow assignment mechanism defines an optimal splitting of data traffic on multiple disjoint paths. The resequencing delay and the usage of the resequencing buffer can be reduced significantly by properly scheduling the sending order of all packets, say, according to their expected arrival times at the destination. To illustrate our model, and without loss of generality, Gaussian distributed end-to-end path delays are used. Our analytical results show that the techniques are very effective in reducing the average end-to-end path delay, the average packet resequencing delay, and the average resequencing buffer occupancy for various path configurations. These promising results can form a basis for designing future adaptive multipath protocols.
This paper proposes an efficient dynamic routing algorithm for Multistage Bus Networks(MBN's) in distributed shared memory environment. Our algorithm utilizes extra paths available on MBN and determines routing paths adaptively according to switch traffic in order to distribute traffic among switches. Precisely, a packet is transmitted to the next switch on an extra path having a lighter traffic. As a consequence the proposed algorithm reduces the mean response time and the average number of waiting tasks. The results of simulations, carried out with varying numbers of processors and varying switch sizes, show that the proposed algorithm improves the mean response time by 9% and the average number of waiting tasks by 21.6%, compared to the existing routing algorithms which do not consider extra paths on MBN.
Many distributed applications build overlays on top of the Internet. Several unsolved issues at the network layer can explain this trend to implement network services such as multicast, mobility, and security at the application layer. On one hand, overlays creating basic topologies are usually limited in flexibility and scalability. On the other hand, overlays creating complex topologies require some form of application level addressing, routing, and naming mechanisms. Our aim is to design an efficient and robust addressing, routing, and naming infrastructure for these complex overlays. Our only assumption is that they are deployed over the Internet topology. Applications that use our middleware will be relieved from managing their own overlay topologies. Our infrastructure is based on the separation of the naming and the addressing planes and provides a convergence plane for the current heterogeneous Internet environment. To implement this property, we have designed a scalable distributed k-resilient name to address binding system. This paper describes the design of our overlay infrastructure and presents performance results concerning its routing scalability, its path inflation efficiency and its resilience to network dynamics.

Bio-inspired routing protocol uses a principle of swarm intelligence, which finds the optimal path to the destination in a distributed and autonomous way in dynamic environments, so that it can maximize routing performances, reduce control overhead, and recover a path failure quickly according to the change of network topology. In this paper, we propose a bio-inspired routing protocol for mobile ad hoc networks. The proposed scheme uses a function of overhearing via wireless media in order to obtain the routing information without additional overhead. Through overhearing, the pheromone is diffused around the shortest path between the source and destination. Based on this diffused pheromone, a probabilistic path exploration is executed and the useful alternative routes between the source and destination are collected. Therefore, the proposed routing protocol can ensure the up-to-date routing information while reducing the control overhead. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme outperforms the typical AODV and AntHocNet protocols in terms of routing performances and significantly decreases the routing overhead against the AntHocNet.

There are various research challenges in vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) that need to be focused until an extensive deployment of it becomes conceivable. Design and development of a scalable routing algorithm for VANETs is one of the critical issue due to frequent path disruptions caused by the vehicle's mobility. This study aims to provide a novel road-aware routing protocol for vehicular networks named as Two-level hierarchical Hybrid Road-Aware (THERA) routing for vehicular ad hoc networks. The proposed protocol is designed explicitly for inter-vehicle communication. In THERA, roads are distributed into non-overlapping road segments to reduce the routing overhead. Unlike other protocols, discovery process does not flood the network with packet broadcasts. Instead, THERA uses the concept of Gateway Vehicles (GV) for the discovery process. In addition, a route between source and destination is flexible to changing topology, as THERA only requires road segment ID and destination ID for the communication. Furthermore, Road-Aware routing reduces the traffic congestion, bypasses the single point of failure, and facilitates the network management. Finally yet importantly, this paper also proposes a probabilistical model to estimate a path duration for each road segment using the highway mobility model. The flexibility of the proposed protocol is evaluated by performing extensive simulations in NS3. We have used SUMO simulator to generate real time vehicular traffic on the roads of Gangnam, South Korea. Comparative analysis of the results confirm that routing overhead for maintaining the network topology is smaller than few previously proposed routing algorithms.
The k-ary n-cube $Q^k_n$ is widely used in the design and implementation of parallel and distributed processing architectures. It consists of $k^n$ identical nodes, each node having degree 2n is connected through bidirectional, point-to-point communication channels to different neighbors. On $Q^k_n$ we would like to transmit packets from a source node to 2n destination nodes simultaneously along paths on this network, the $i^{th}$ packet will be transmitted along the $i^{th}$ path, where $0{\leq}i{\leq}2n-1$. In order for all packets to arrive at a destination node quickly and securely, we present an $O(n^3)$ routing algorithm on $Q^k_n$ for generating a set of one-to-many node-disjoint and nearly shortest paths, where each path is either shortest or nearly shortest and the total length of these paths is nearly minimum since the path is mainly determined by employing the Hungarian method.

Proposal algorithm in this paper introduced cells, units of router group, for distributed processing of previous genetic algorithm. This paper presented ways to reduce search delay time of overall network through cell-based genetic algorithm. As a result of performance analysis comparing with existing genetic algorithm through experiments, the proposal algorithm was verified superior in terms of costs and delay time. Furthermore, time for routing an alternative path was reduced in proposal algorithm, in case that a network was damaged in existing optimal path algorithm, Dijkstra algorithm, and the proposal algorithm was designed to route an alternative path faster than Dijkstra algorithm, as it has a 2nd shortest path in cells of the damaged network. The study showed that the proposal algorithm can support routing of alternative path, if Dijkstra algorithm is damaged in a network.
