  • Harmonic distortions in current waveform may cause significant problems in electric power system facility and operation. This paper presents an adaptive parameter estimation method to detect harmonic current components caused by nonlinear loads. In addition, a coordination strategy for multiple inverter-interfaced distributed generators to compensate the harmonic currents is discussed. The coordination strategy is realized by distributing the harmonic compensation participation index to individual distributed generators. The harmonic compensation participation index can be determined by the amount of remaining power generation capacity of each distributed generator. Simulation results based on switching-level inverter models show that the proposed harmonic detection method has good performance and the coordination strategy can improve harmonic problems efficiently.

  • In recent years, the power demand has been increasing steadily and the occurrence of maximum power demand has been moving from the summer season to the winter season in Korea. And since the control of electric power supply and demand is more important under those situations, a micro-grid system began to emerge as a keyword for the sTable operation of electric power system. A micro-gird power system is composed of various kinds of distributed generators(DG) such as small diesel generator, wind turbine, photo-voltaic generator and energy storage system(ESS). This paper introduces a method to determine the optimal capacities of the distributed generators which are installed in a stand-alone type of microgrid power system based on the fundamental proportion of diesel generator. At first, the fundamental proportion of diesel generator will be determined by changing from 0 to 50 percent. And then we will optimize the capacities of renewable energy resources and ESS according to load patterns. Lastly, after recalculating the capacity of ESS with consideration for SOC constraints, the optimal capacities of distributed generators will be decided.

  • Microturbines system (MTS) are currently being deployed as small scale on-site distributed generators for microgrids and smart grids. In order to fully exploit DG potentialities, advanced integrated controls that include power electronics facilities, communication technologies and advanced modeling are required. Significant expectations are posed on gas microturbines that can be easily installed in large commercial and public buildings. Modeling, control, simulation of microturbine generator based distributed generation system in smart grid application of buildings for both grid-connected and islanding conditions are presented. It also incorporates modeling and simulation of MT with a speed control system of the MT-permanent magnet synchronous generator to keep the speed constant with load variation. Model and simulations are performed using MATLAB, Simulink and SimPowerSystem software package. The model is built from the dynamics of each part with their interconnections. This simplified model is a useful tool for studying the various operational aspects of MT and is also applicable with building cooling, heating and power (BCHP) systems

  • A distributed control method is proposed to improve the power sharing performance of bidirectional distributed generators and the voltage regulation performance of a DC bus in a DC microgrid. Voltage sensitivity analysis based on power flow analysis is conducted to analyze the structural characteristics of a DC microgrid. A distributed control method using a voltage sensitivity matrix is proposed on the basis of this analysis. The proposed method uses information received through the communication system and performs the droop gain variation method and voltage shift method without additional PI controllers. This approach achieves improved power sharing and voltage regulation performance without output transient states. The proposed method is implemented through a laboratory-scaled experimental system consisting of two bidirectional distributed generators, namely, a load and a non-dispatchable distributed generator in a four-bus ring-type model. The experimental results show improved power sharing accuracy and voltage regulation performance.

  • This paper proposes an estimation algorithm for the generating power of distributed generations(DG) interconnected with distribution networks. These days, DG are rapidly increasing and most of them are interconnected with distribution networks. The DG can supply power into the distribution network, which may make significant impact on fault current and the protection scheme of the interconnected distribution networks. Generally these influences of DG is proportioned as the distributed generator's power. Therefore, it is important to forecast the output power of distributed generator in PCC(point of common coupling). This paper presents the prediction method of DG's power by monitoring the current and phase difference.

  • A tensor is a multi-dimensional array that represents many data such as (user, user, time) in the social network system. A tensor generator is an important tool for multi-dimensional data mining research with various applications including simulation, multi-dimensional data modeling/understanding, and sampling/extrapolation. However, existing tensor generators cannot generate sparse tensors like real-world tensors that obey power law. In addition, they have limitations such as tensor sizes that can be processed and additional time required to upload generated tensor to distributed systems for further analysis. In this study, we propose TeT, a distributed tera-scale tensor generator to solve these problems. TeT generates sparse random tensor as well as sparse R-MAT and Kronecker tensor without any limitation on tensor sizes. In addition, a TeT-generated tensor is immediately ready for further tensor analysis on the same distributed system. The careful design of TeT facilitates nearly linear scalability on the number of machines.

  • A network-coding-based scheme is proposed to improve the energy efficiency of distributed storage systems in WSNs (Wireless Sensor Networks). We mainly focus on two problems: firstly, consideration is given to effective distributed storage technology; secondly, we address how to effectively repair the data in failed storage nodes. For the first problem, we propose a method to obtain a sparse generator matrix to construct network codes, and this sparse generator matrix is proven to be the sparsest. Benefiting from this matrix, the energy consumption required to implement distributed storage is reduced. For the second problem, we designed a network-coding-based iterative repair method, which adequately utilizes the idea of re-encoding at intermediate nodes from network coding theory. Benefiting from the re-encoding, the energy consumption required by data repair is significantly reduced. Moreover, we provide an explicit lower bound of field size required by this scheme, which implies that it can work over a small field and the required computation overhead is very low. The simulation result verifies that the proposed scheme not only reduces the total energy consumption required to implement distributed storage system in WSNs, but also balances energy consumption of the networks.

  • This paper describes the effect of the interconnected wind turbine generators on fault current level of distribution networks. Distributed generator(DG) interconnected with grid can supply the power into a power network not only the normal conditions, but also the fault conditions of distribution network. If the fault happened in the distribution power line with DG, the fault current level measured in a relaying point might be higher than that of distribution network without wind turbine generator due to the contribution of wind farm. Consequently, it may destroy the conventional protective devices applied in the distribution network with DG. Simulation results shows that the current level of fault happened in the power line with DG depends on the power output of DG.

  • Synchronous generators and induction generators are mainly used in hydroelectric power generation. Synchronous generator is mainly applied to large hydroelectric plants but induction generator is applied to the small hydro power plants. Stability of induction generator is slightly less than the synchronous generator. However, induction generator has many advantages rather than a synchronous generator in terms of price and maintenance. So Induction generator is used primarily in small hydroelectric power station less than 1,000kW recently. Squirrel cage induction generator generates a high inrush current at the grid-connection. This high inrush current causes a voltage drop on the grid. In order to reduce the voltage drop and to analyze the power flow, the analysis for operating characteristics of the induction generator should be reviewed in advance. In this study, we analyzed the voltage drop and power flow analysis when a 1500kW induction generator is connected to the grid. The voltage drop is slightly higher than the acceptable range of distributed power supply voltage and the power flow of the generator is performed well.
