  • The revision of radio waves act, which took effect on July 1,2005, widened the bandwidth of PLC from $9kHz{\sim}450kHz$ to $9kHz{\sim}30MHz$. This high upper limit of frequency may cause the interference in HF wireless communications. From this point of view, the goal of this research is to suggest the estimation method of whether-or-not the interference occurs and furthermore offer countermeasures to avoid it hereafter. Ministry of Information and Communication Radio Research Laboratory(MIC-RRL)has been researching for the interference and devoting themselves to turn out how much it affects to HF wireless communications since the revision took effect. This research suggests some estimation methods with receivers, signal generators, or SINAD(Signal to Noise and Distortion) Meter which is so suitable for the RF environment that we can overcome the existing limit to the EMC environment. In addition, this research is focused on securing the environment for wireless communications by establishing the safety zone or suggesting the ways to prohibit the use of the bandwidth, which may cause serious interference, in order to minimize the effect of PLC on HF maritime mobile telecommunications.

  • The H.264/AVC standard achieves higher coding efficiency than previous video coding standards with the rate-distortion optimization (RDO) technique which selects the best coding mode and reference frame for each macroblock. As a result, the complexity of the encoder have been significantly increased. In this paper, a fast intra-mode decision algorithm is proposed to reduce the computational load of intra-mode search, which is based on the inverse tree-structure edge prediction algorithm. First, we obtained the dominant edge for each $4{\times}4$ block from local edge information, then the RDO process is only performed by the mode which corresponds to dominant edge direction. Then, for the $8{\times}8$ (or $16{\times}16$) block stage, the dominant edge is calculated from its four $4{\times}4$ (or $16{\times}16$) blocks' dominant edges without additional calculation and the RDO process is also performed by the mode which is related to dominant edge direction. Experimental results show that proposed scheme can significantly improve the speed of the intra prediction with a negligible loss in the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) and a little increase of bits.

  • It is necessary to find characteristic phenomena related with permittivity differences for classification of liquid characteristics. If these phenomena can be remotely detected and characteristics can be extracted, it will be very useful in finding flammable liquid materials and classifying substances of these liquids. Therefore, in this paper, reflection and transmitted signals were analyzed from three receiving antennas with one transmitting antenna using wideband electromagnetic wave signals. Frequency response characteristics of reflected or transmitted signals are different according to characteristics of liquid materials. However, conventional FFT methods cannot be applied due to problems of low resolution caused by data windowing distortion. To minimize these problems, eigenvector analysis method was applied for high resolution spectrum estimation of received signals. From these results, it can be shown that classification of many kinds of liquids are possible using peak frequencies and corresponding peak power values of spectrum estimates obtained from various liquid materials.

  • This paper proposes a novel mapping algorithm in Omni-directional Vision SLAM based on an obstacle's feature extraction using Lucas-Kanade Optical Flow motion detection and images obtained through fish-eye lenses mounted on robots. Omni-directional image sensors have distortion problems because they use a fish-eye lens or mirror, but it is possible in real time image processing for mobile robots because it measured all information around the robot at one time. In previous Omni-Directional Vision SLAM research, feature points in corrected fisheye images were used but the proposed algorithm corrected only the feature point of the obstacle. We obtained faster processing than previous systems through this process. The core of the proposed algorithm may be summarized as follows: First, we capture instantaneous $360^{\circ}$ panoramic images around a robot through fish-eye lenses which are mounted in the bottom direction. Second, we remove the feature points of the floor surface using a histogram filter, and label the candidates of the obstacle extracted. Third, we estimate the location of obstacles based on motion vectors using LKOF. Finally, it estimates the robot position using an Extended Kalman Filter based on the obstacle position obtained by LKOF and creates a map. We will confirm the reliability of the mapping algorithm using motion estimation based on fisheye images through the comparison between maps obtained using the proposed algorithm and real maps.

  • This paper describes a method for overcoming the motion artifacts inherent in synthetic aperture(SA) imaging. based on the investigation results as to the influence of a target motion on synthetic aperture techniques. This method uses a region-based motion compensation approach in which only the axial motion is estimated and compensated for a given region of interest(ROI) under the assumption that the whole ROI moves uniformly The estimated axial motion is calculated with a crosscorrelation(CC) method at the Point where the focused signal has the maximum energy within the ROI. We also presents a method for estimating the axial motion using the autocorrelation(AC) method that is widely used to estimate average Doppler frequency Both computer simulations and in vivo experiments show that the proposed methods can improve greatly the spatial resolution and SNR of ultrasound imaging by implementing the SA techniques for two-way dynamic focusing without motion artifacts. In addition the AC-barred motion compensation method provides almost the same results as the CC-based one, but with a dramatically reduced computational complexity.

  • This study presents a close-range photogrammetry that is applicable to beach profile estimation using a non-metric camera. Based on the analysis of oblique video image in which the video camera was installed on a horizontal plane and the field of view was fixed, a new equation to analyze a photograph was developed considering the following aspects: (1) camera is allowed to be rotated about its optical axis and (2) a simple error model is adopted to correct lens distortion and other systematic errors associated with the non-metric camera, which improves accuracy of non-metric imageries. To test the modified technique, photographs of the beach were taken near the Donghae City in February, 1998. In addition, beach profiles were surveyed with conventional dumpy level and surveying staff. RMS error between the estimated and measured beach profiles is less than 10 cm in elevation.

  • We present the framework for JND based Illumination and Color Restoration Using Edge-preserving filter for restoring distorted images taken under the arbitrary lighting conditions. The proposed method is effective for appropriate illumination compensation, vivid color restoration, artifacts suppression, automatic parameter estimation, and low computation cost for HW implementation. We show the efficiency of the mean shift filter and sigma filter for illumination compensation with small spread parameter while considering the processing time and removing the artifacts such as HALO and noise amplification. The suggested CRF (color restoration filter) can restore the natural color and correct color distortion artifact more perceptually compared with current solutions. For the automatic processing, the image statistics analysis finds suitable parameter using JND and all constants are pre-defined. We also introduce the ROI-based parameter estimation dealing with small shadow area against spacious well-exposed background in an image for the touch-screen camera. The object evaluation is performed by CMC, CIEde2000, PSNR, SSIM, and 3D CIELAB gamut with state-of-the-art research and existing commercial solutions.

  • In this paper, a new signal processing technique is proposed for calibrating gain, phase, delay offsets in array antenna based anti-jamming minimum variance distortionless response (MVDR) global-positioning-system (GPS) receivers. The proposed technique estimates gain, phase and delay offsets across the antennas, and compensates for the offsets based on the estimates. A pilot signal with good correlation characteristics is used for accurate estimation of the gain, phase and delay offsets. Based on the cross-correlation, the delay offset is first estimated and then gain/phase offsets are estimated. For fine delay offset estimation and compensation, an interpolation technique is used, and specifically, the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) is employed for the interpolation technique to reduce the computational complexity. The proposed technique is verified through computer simulation using MATLAB. According to the simulation results, the proposed technique can reduce the gain, phaes and delay offset to 0.01 dB, 0.05 degree, and 0.5 ns, respectively.

  • In Block Matching Algorithm (BMA), a search pattern has a very important affect on the search time and the output quality. In this paper, we propose the HDS( Half Diamond Search) pattern based on the cross center-biased distribution property of a motion vector. At lust, the 4 points in the above, below, left, and right around the search center is calculated to decide the point of the MBD (Minimum Block Distortion). And an above point of the MBD is checked to calculate the SAD. If the SAD is less than the previous MBD, this process is repeated. Otherwise, the left and right points of MBD are calculated to decide the points that have the MBD between two points. These processes are repeated to the predicted direction for motion estimation. Experiments show that the speedup improvement of the proposed algorithm can be up to 23% while maintaining similar image quality.

  • As a criterion of information theoretic learning, the Euclidean distance (ED) of two error probability distribution functions (minimum ED of error, MEDE) has been adopted in nonlinear (decision feedback, DF) supervised equalizer algorithms and has shown significantly improved performance in severe channel distortion and impulsive noise environments. However, the MEDE-DF algorithm has the problem of heavy computational complexity. In this paper, the recursive ED for MEDE-DF algorithm is derived first, and then the feed-forward and feedback section gradients for weight update are estimated recursively. To prove the effectiveness of the recursive gradient estimation for the MEDE-DF algorithm, the number of multiplications are compared and MSE performance in impulsive noise and underwater communication environments is compared through computer simulation. The ratio of the number of multiplications between the proposed DF and the conventional MEDE-DF algorithm is revealed to be $2(9N+4):2(3N^2+3N)$ for the sample size N with the same MSE learning performance in the impulsive noise and underwater channel environment.
