  • The insecticidal activities of 30 aromatic plant extracts against four insect pests were examined by direct contact application. Against Nilaparvata lugens female adults, Myzus persicae female adults, and Plutella xylostella larvae, at 5,000 ppm, >90% mortality was achieved in the methanol extracts of the rhizomes from Cnidium officinale, Acorus gramineus, Acorus calamus var. angustatus and Curcuma Ionga, the whole plant from Agastache rugosa, the fruits from Illicium verum and Piper nigrum, and the flower bud from Eugenia caryophyllata as well as Cinnamomum camphora steam distillate. Against Spodoptera litura larvae, all test plant extracts were ineffective. The plants described merit further study as potential insect-control agents against insect pests.

  • The steam distillate obtained from sawdust of Thujopsis dolabrata var. hondai was fractionated by centrifugal thin-film evaporation. and then the fractions were investigated against antiplatelet activity using washed rabbit platelets in vitro. The biologically active constituent of T. dolabrata sawdust was isolated by silica gel column chromatography and HPLC and characterized as carvacrol by various spectral analysis ($^{1}H$, $^{13}C$-NMR and GC/MS studies). • Empty fruit bunch (EFB) char was used to remove $NO_x$ and odorous substances. The physicochemical properties of the EFB chars were altered by steam or KOH treatments. The Brunauer-Emmett-Teller surface area and porosity were measured to determine the properties of the modified EFB chars. The $deNO_x$ and adsorption test for hydrogen sulphide and acetaldehyde were performed to determine the feasibility of the modified EFB chars. The KOH-treated EFB (KEFB) char revealed higher $deNO_x$ efficiency than with commercial activated carbon. The Cu-impregnated EFB char also had high $deNO_x$ efficiency at temperatures higher than $150^{\circ}C$. The KEFB char showed the highest hydrogen sulphide and acetaldehyde adsorption ability, followed by the steam-treated EFB char and untreated EFB char. Moreover, the product prepared by sulfonation of EFB char showed excellent performance for esterification of palm fatty acid distillate for biodiesel production.

  • The single treatment of mice with steam distillate, non-volatile ether extract and methanol extract from mace (Arils of Myristica fragrans) caused a significant prolongation of hexobarbital-induced narcosis and increase in strychnine toxicity as well as a significant decrease in hepatic microsomal drug metabolizing enzyme activities. On 7 consecutive daily administrations, however, the duration of hypnosis was markedly shortened and significant increases in the hepatic enzyme activities were shown. With systematic fractionation by $SiO_2$ column chromatography of non-volatile ether fraction monitoring by animal tests a new lignan (mp $70{\sim}72^{\circ}$, MW 328, $[{\alpha}]^{20}_D+5.28$) was isolated as an active principle and its structure was elucidated as (2R, 3S)-1-(3,4-methylendioxyphenyl)-2,3 dimethyl-4-(4-hydroxy-3-methoxyphenyl) butane.

  • The repellent activity of methanol extracts from 8 aromatic medicinal plant species and a steam distillate against blood-starved Aedes aegypti (L.) females was laboratory examined by skin test and compared with that of N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (deet). Reponeses varied according to Plant species. At a dose of $0.1mg/\textrm{cm}^2$, potent repellency against adult mosquitoes was obtained with extracts of Cinnamomum camphora (94.1 %) Cinnamomum cassia bark (91.2%), Eugenia caryophyllata flower bud (72.2%), and Tilia amurensis (69.4%). Repellent activity of these plant extracts was comparable to that of deet (83.4%). The plants described merit further study as potential mosquito-repellent agents.

  • For gold balsam, the suitable sulfur balsam which is made of lavender oil and sulfur is found to be the distillate with the content of 15~19% sulfur. The sulfur balsam is distillated under 20mmHg vaccum at 84~105$^{\circ}C$. The composition of the compound which is produced by reaction between sulfur balsam and gold chloride is recognized as C10H18SAuCl3. This varys to C10H18SAuCl in water. The reaction constants K from C10H18SAuCl3 to C10H18SAuCl at 30, 40, 5$0^{\circ}C$ are as followsr. K1=7.97~9.28$\times$10-2 K2=2.81~3.79$\times$10-1 K3=4.74~6.74$\times$10-1 The plots of T versus log K are linear, which shows pseudo-first order reaction. The lower temperature is, the more stable C10H18SAuCl3 is. The gold balsam with excess sulfur balsam is increased in stability.

  • A novel microwave-induced pyrolysis of polystyrene in motor oil was performed using a quartz tube reactor with silicon carbide as the microwave absorbent. Different pyrolysis conditions were investigated, such as time range from 30 minutes to 1 hour and power range from 180 to 250 watt. The distillate components were analyzed with GC-MS, and styrene, 1-methyl styrene, toluene, ethyl benzene were the four main products. Among these, styrene took over 70 percentages. Temperature of the complete pyrolysis using microwave was much lower than that of conventional thermal pyrolysis method.

  • A new control scheme s proposed for the control of reactive batch distillation (RBD) column. A nonlinear wave model captures the essential dynamic behavior of the RBD process. The proposed control scheme is based on both Generic Model Control(GNC) and nonlinear wave model. The control scheme uses a profile position of the column as a controlled variable. Ethanol esterification process using RBD is chosen as an example process. Tight control of the distillate purity is obtained with the use of the proposed control scheme.

  • Objectives : The aim of this study is to report a case showing rapid skin regeneration and recovery by applying Korean medicine treatment to lower extremity ulcer. Methods : We treated a female patient with idiopathic right leg ulcer by Korean medicine treatment such as herbal medicine, acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, Coptidis Rhizoma distillate wet dressing, and Jawoongo application. The treatment effect was evaluated by visual observation through photography, measurement of the area of the affected area, NRS(Numeral Rating Scale) for the level of discomfort, DLQI(Dermatology life quality index), and treatment satisfaction. Results : After Korean medicine treatment, recovery of skin tissue, reduction in affected area, and decrease in NRS for discomfort and DLQI were observed, and satisfaction with Korean medicine treatment was also high at 80%. Conclusions : This study shows that Korean medicine treatment can be effective in treating skin ulcers. We hope that research of Korean medicine treatment on skin ulcers will be promoted in the future.
