  • Among the variety of welding processes available, the flux cored arc welding is one of the most frequently used process, because of its wide range of application and high productivity. The weld joint tracking is indispensable to improve the flexibility of the arc welding robot application for the flux cored arc welding (FCAW) process. In this study, an arc sensor which utilizes the electrical signal obtained from the welding arc itself was developed for weld joint tracking in FCAW. Because a model of the welding arc in flux cored arc welding was required to develop the arc sensor, a mathematical model was proposed by analysing the welding arc behaviour, and also an experimental model by using the factorial experiment and least square method. For overcoming the fluctuation in the welding current signal during tracking the weld joint, it was fitted to a curve which is inversely proportional to a trace of tip-to-workpiece distance by using the quadratic curve-fitting method.

  • An intonation curve stylization was used for an acoustical analysis of English speech. For the analysis, acoustical feature values were extracted from 1,848 utterances produced with normal and fast speech rate by 28 (12 women and 16 men) native speakers of English. Men are found to speak faster than women at normal speech rate but no difference is found between genders at fast speech rate. Analysis of pitch point features has it that fast speech has greater Pt (pitch point movement time), Pr (pitch point pitch range), and Pd (pitch point distance) but smaller Ps (pitch point slope) than normal speech. Men show greater Pt, Pr, and Pd than women. Analysis of sentence level features reveals that fast speech has smaller Sr (sentence level pitch range), Sd (sentence duration), and Max (maximum pitch) but greater Ss (sentence slope) than normal speech. Women show greater Sr, Ss, Sp (pitch difference between the first pitch point and the last), Sd, MaxNr (normalized Max), and MinNr (normalized Min) than men. As speech rate increases, women speak with greater Ss and Sr than men.

  • Applying force-distance curve measurement by atomic force microscopy to a theoretical mechanical model gives us elastic properties of polymer surfaces. Our group focuses on force-mapping method, in which force-distance curve is performed at each lattice point on a sample surface and subsequently a variety of properties derived from analytical results are combined to construct a 2-dimensional image. With this method we succeeded in deriving Young' s modulus distribution map method of rubbery/rubbery polymer blend surfaces with ${\sim}100\;nm$ lateral resolution. We also applied force-mapping method to another theory to divide distribution of hardness from that of adhesion. We will demonstrate recent progress.

  • We use light-curve fitting models (MLCS2k2, SALT2, and SNooPy) as implemented in SNANA to make the YOnsei Nearby Supernova Evolution Investigation (YONSEI) Supernova Catalogue. The catalogue consists of several hundred Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) in the redshift range from 0.01 to 1.35, and provides distance moduli, light-curve shape parameters, and color or extinction values for each supernova. This data set will be used to study the dependence of SNe Ia luminosities on the host galaxy morphologies. In this paper, we present the YONSEI Supernova Catalogue and preliminary systematic tests for the catalogue.

  • In this paper, the effects of irregular bead shapes on fatigue life were investigated. A modified S-N curve method was used to estimate the fatigue life, which considered the inherent multiaxiality caused by the geometrical feature produced by the welding process. The point method of the critical distance method was used to determine the fatigue effective stress. Three types of fillet joint models were tested in the fatigue experiments. For each model, real bead shapes were collected using a 3D laser scanner, and finite element analyses were performed. The results of the analyses with actual bead shapes were compared with those using an idealized bead shape model. The results of the present analytical methods showed good agreement with the experimental results.

  • The theory of island biogeography has influenced strongly on the conservation and management issues of species diversity in the islands. The theory has not limited to islands in the ocean, but expanded to isolated and fragmented areas in the forests and urban. This study has a rare opportunity to explore the species diversity and abundance of birds in the islands of Korea. A total of 151 islands in the west and south areas in the Korean peninsula were examined. The number of species and the area of islands were highly significant (P<0.000) and the number of species and the distance from the mainland showed not so strong relationship. This indicated that bird species diversity has more influenced by the size of the islands not the distance. This can be from the study species of birds that can fly long distance, and also natural characteristics of migratory and resident status. Species-area curve showed that the z-value was 0.21 indicating the area and the bird species are strongly correlated. The long-term monitoring of bird species presence in the islands should be followed for a proper management plan.

  • Supernovae (SNe) are well known as good cosmological distance probes owing to their brightness and well-characterized light curve property. Specifically, type Ia SNe have contributed greatly to our understanding of acceleration of cosmic expansion. However, type IIP supernovae occur most frequently (~ 40% of all) at low and high redshift. As knowledge on the type IIP SNe increases, distance measurement methods using type IIP SNe have evolved. In this study, we apply Photometric Color Method (PCM), which needs only photometric data using properties of plateau on type IIP SNe light curves, to measure distances of several host galaxies of SNe IIP from the Intensive Monitoring Survey of Nearby Galaxies (IMSNG). The daily monitoring of galaxies at < 50 Mpc allows us to construct a dense light curve of SNe that occurred in our target galaxies. We observed two SNe IIP, SN2014cx and SN2017eaw and measured distances to their host galaxies, NGC 337 and NGC6946 respectively. Our results are comparable with other secondary distance measurement methods, 4-5 Mpc, however smaller than the result derived from the Tip of Red Giant Branch (TRGB) method, $6.7{\pm}0.2$ and $7.7{\pm}0.3Mpc$.

  • This study was conducted to examine the effects of the change of cap hole diameter and pressure on the travelling distance and the sprayed particle size for the medium range nozzle. The results of this study are summarized as follows; 1) The effective travelling distance was about from 1 meter to 8 meters and centro-position of the travelling distance was about 3 or 5 meters. 2) Main effect of change of cap hole diameter for the travelling distance was a slight convex quadratic curve. 3) Main effect of change of pressure increased linearly, its increasing rate about 1.6 was large. 4) Sizes of sprayed particles were less than 250${\mu}$ generally and the sizes decreased according to the increasing of travelling distance. 5) Changes of diameter of sprayed particles by cap hole diameter increased in accordance with increasing of cap hole diameter. 6) Changes of diameter of sprayed particles by the groove depth of swirl plate was very slight.

  • In this paper, we analyze the electrical characteristics of PV depending on distance among solar cells before and after lamination process. From the result, the PV module's maximum power increases about 3.37% when solar cells's distance is 10mm. And the maximum power increases up to 8.42% when solar cells's maximum distance is 50mm. It is assumed that PV module's surface temperature decreases because of increasing distance between solar cells that would give high power generation. Also, short distance between solar cell and frame result in contamination on glass. When considering reduced maximum power caused by contaminant, from that. we can fabricated PV module of lower cost with high performance.

  • Generation of optimum planar B-spline curve in terms of minimum deviation and required fairness to approximate a target shape defined by a strip-shaped unorganized 2D point cloud is studied. It is proposed to use the location of control points as variables within the geometric optimization framework of point distance minimization. An adaptive simulated annealing heuristic optimization algorithm is developed to iteratively update an initial approximate curve towards the target shape. The new implementation comprises an adaptive cooling procedure in which the temperature change is adaptively dependent on the objective function evolution. It is shown that the proposed method results in an improved convergence speed when compared to the standard simulated annealing method. A couple of examples are included to show the applicability of the proposed method in the surface model reconstruction directly from point cloud data.
