Austenitic stainless steel has good weldability but is sensitive to hot cracking such as solidification crack and liquation crack. In this study, the specimens of dissimilar metals made between austenitic stainless steel and Al-brass were welded by GTAW process using four different filler metals. Cracks were detected in the heat-affected zone of the stainless steel when welded with CuAl, CuSn and NiCu filler metals, but no cracks were detected a Ni filler metal was used. The cracks propagated along the grain boundary in the heat affected zone near the fusion line to base metal of 316L stainless steel. The cracks were located inside the weld bead with very fine hairline crack. All cracks initiated at the fusion line and moved forward in the base metal. From energy dispersion spectroscopy (EDS), Cu peak was detected only in the crack-opening area.

Laser welding of dissimilar metals has been widely used to improve a wear resistance and a corrosion resistance of the industrial parts. The objective of this research is to investigate the influence of the process parameters, such as the welding for SM45C and STS304 with CW Nd:YAG lasers. The bead-on-plate welding tests are carried out for several combinations of the experimental conditions. In order to quantitatively examine the characteristics of the dissimilar welding, the welding quality of the cut section, stress-strain behavior and the hardness of the welded metal are investigated. From the results of the investigation, it has been shown that the optimal voiding condition without defects in the vicinity of the welded area and with a good welding quality is 1600W of the laser power, 0.85m/min of welding speed and $4{\ell}/min$ of pressure for shielding gas.

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) is a solid-state process, where the objects are joined together without reaching their melting point. It has been shown that this method is a suitable way to join dissimilar aluminium alloys. The current article employed hole drilling technique to measure the residual stress distribution experimentally in different zones of dissimilar aluminium alloys AA6061-T6 and AA7075-T6 Butt welded using FSW. Results are compared with those of similar AA6061-T6 plates joined using a conventional fusion welding method called tungsten inert gas (TIG). Also, the evolution of the residual stresses in the thickness direction was investigated, and it was found that the maximum residual stresses are below the yield strength of the material in the shoulder region. It was also revealed that the longitudinal residual stresses in the joint were much larger than the transverse residual stresses. Meanwhile, Vickers micro hardness measurements were performed in the cross-section of the samples. The largest hardness values were observed in the stir zone (SZ) adjacent to the advancing side whereas low hardness values were measured at the HAZ of both alloys and the SZ adjacent to the retreating side.
Friction stir welding has become a viable and important manufacturing alternative or fabrication component, especially in aerospace and automobile applications involving aluminium alloys. In recent years, there is an increasing interest for FSW of dissimilar metals and alloys, particularly systems which are difficult to weld by conventional, thermal (or fusion) welding. In this study we tried to analyse the complex heat distribution occurring in TIG assisted FSW of dissimilar butt joint (STS304 and Al6061). For this, an analytical model for heat generation by FSW based on contact conditions has been developed. The heat input was calculated considering the coefficient of friction and slip factor between each work piece material with the tool material. The thermal model is used to generate the temperature characteristics curve, which successfully predicts the maximum welding temperature in each alloys. The analysis was carried out using the in-house solver.
DMWs are common feature of the PWR in the welded connections between carbon steel and stainless steel piping. The nickel-based weld metal, Alloy 82/182, is used for welding the dissimilar metals and is known to be susceptible to PWSCC. A round-robin program has been implemented to benchmark the numerical simulation of the transient temperature and weld residual stresses in the DMWs. To solve the round-robin problem related to Pressurizer Safety & Relief nozzle, the thermal elasto-plastic analysis is performed in the DMW by using the FEM. The welding includes both the DMW of the nozzle to safe-end and the SMW of the safe-end and piping. Major results of the analyses are discussed: The axial and circumferential residual stresses are found to be -88MPa(225MPa) and -38MPa(293MPa) on the inner surface of the DMW; where the values in parenthesis are the residual stresses after the DMW. Thermo-mechanical interaction by the SMW has a significant effect on the residual stress fields in the DMW.
By using miniature SENB specimens, the fracture properties of the materials in the region of welded metal, 321 stainless steel heat affected zone, 690 alloy heat affected zone of 321/690 dissimilar metal girth welded joints were tested. Both the J-resistance curves and critical fracture toughness of the three different materials are affected by the crack size because of the effect of crack tip constraint. Groups of constraint corrected J-resistance curves of the three materials are obtained according to J-Q-M approach. The welded metals exhibit the best fracture resistance but the worst fracture resistance is observed in the material of 690 alloy heat affected zone.
Laser beam welding is more advantageous compared to conventional methods. Titanium/Aluminium dissimilar alloy thin sheet metals are difficult to weld due to large difference in melting point. The performance of the weldment depends upon interlayer formation and distribution of intermetallics. During welding, aluminium gets lost at the temperature below the melting point of titanium. Therefore, it is needed to improve a new metal joining techniques between these two alloys. The present work is carried for welding TI6AL4V and AA2024 alloy by using Nd:YAG Pulsed laser welding unit. The performance of the butt welded interlayer structures are discussed in detail using hardness test and SEM. Test results reveal that interlayer fracture is caused near aluminium side due to low strength at the weld joint.
Self-piercing riveting is an joining method of advanced high strength steels (AHSS) and other dissimilar materials. It has attracted considerable interest from the automotive industry. The SPR has become an interesting alternative joining technique for difficult to weld materials such as steels and aluminium alloys. In this paper, self-piercing rivet and anvil for SPR were designed for the joining conditions with AHSS and aluminium alloy. Various conditions of SPR were simulated for the design of rivets and anvils. The simulated results were in good agreement with experimental ones. As a result, over HV500 rivet is desirable to joint SPFC780 AHSS and aluminum alloy.

For surface hardening of a continuous casting mold component, a fundamental metallurgical investigation on dissimilar laser clads (Cu-NiCrBSi) is performed. In particular, variation behavior of microstructures and mechanical properties (hardness and wear resistance) of dissimilar clads during long-term service is clarified by performing high-temperature post-clad heat treatment (temperature range: 500 ~ 1,000 ℃ and isothermal holding time: 20 ~ 500 min). The microstructures of clad metals (as-clads) consist of fine dendrite morphologies and severe microsegregations of the alloying elements (Cr and Si); substrate material (Cu) is clearly confirmed. During the post-clad heat treatment, the microsegregations are totally homogenized, and secondary phases (Cr-based borides and carbides) precipitated during the short-term heat treatment are also almost dissolved, especially at the heat treatment conditions of 950 ℃ for 500 min. Owing to these microstructural homogenization behaviors, an opposite tendency of the surface mechanical properties can be confirmed. In other words, the wear resistance (wear rate) improves from 4.1 × 10-2 ㎣/Nm (as-clad condition) to 1.4 × 10-2 ㎣/Nm (heat-treated at 950 ℃ for 500 min), whereas the hardness decreases from 453 HV (as-clad condition) to 142 HV (heat-treated at 950 ℃ for 500 min).
