OLED Light Enhancement with Nanostructured Films

  • Nanostructured OLED light extraction films have been made via roll-to-roll coating processes. Their on-axis and integrated outcoupling efficiencies reach 2X and 1.3-1.8X, respectively. Optical performance and effects of the nanostructured film on pixel blur and image ghosting will be discussed.

  • We report here our recent progress in the development and commercialization of polyfluorenes emitting red, green and blue (ROB) colors as materials for light emitting diodes (LEDs). Our patented version of the Suzuki coupling process has been used to synthesize a variety of fluorenebased homopolymers and copolymers emitting colors across the entire visible spectrum. The optical and electronic properties of the polymers are tailored through selective incorporation of different aromatic units into the polyfluorene backbone. Our latest green emitter, reported herein, provides very efficient devices with a low turn-on voltage of 2.25 V, a peak efficiency of 10.5 Cd/A at 6,600 Cd/$m^2$ at 4.85 V. These devices maintain an efficiency of greater than 10 Cd/A up to 50,000 Cd/$m^2$ and demonstrate very good stability as exemplified by a device half-life of greater than 1,500 hours starting from 1,100 Cd/$m^2$. Considerable progress has also been made with red and blue emitters and will be the subject of this presentation.

  • High performance 42 inch XGA PDP with high luminance of 1,000 cd/$m^2$ has been developed using high efficient electrode structure, discharge gas and closed barrier ribs. For high speed addressing with single scan technique, address discharge time lag was reduced over 40% with FAST driving scheme and new materials. High dark room contrast ratio of 5,000 : 1 was achieved and picture quality was improved using new algorithm for eliminating false contour and improving gray level linearity.

  • System-on-glass technology made with low temperature poly-Si TFT has been rapidly advancing in recent years. We have developed a low-power, narrow edged frame, 1.9inch system-on-glass LCD which fully integrates a 16-bit RGB interface driver and all power circuits required for driving the LCD. In this paper, the latest poly-Si TFT circuit technologies used in the newly developed LCD are discussed. The development trends are also reviewed.

  • A series of images were displayed on an OLED display placed within a digital still camera body to characterize the aging of the OLED display in a realistic environment and with an image set that matches actual consumer usage as closely as possible. The aging characteristics of the OLED display were measured and shown to meet the requirements of a digital still camera application by a wide margin.

  • Several innovations for reducing the bulkiness of glass bulbs for flat and large CRTs have been made and further technologies are being developed by using material and structural approaches.   • A full-color AMOLED display with an RGBW color filter pattern has been fabricated. Displays with this format require about $^1/_2$ the power of analogous RGB displays. RGBW and RGB 2.16inch diagonal displays with average power consumptions of 180 mW and 340 mW, respectively, are demonstrated for a set of standard digital still camera images at a luminance of 100 cd/$m^2$. In both cases, a white-emitting AMOLED is used as the light source. The higher efficiency of the RGBW format results because a large fraction of a typical image can be represented as white, and the white sub-pixel in an RGBW AMOLED display is highly efficient because of the absence of any color filter. RGBW and RGB AMOLED displays have the same color gamut and, aside from the power consumption difference, are indistinguishable.

  • A self-priming and photosensitive aqueous-basedevelopable benzocyclobutene (BCB)-based dielectric material curable in air is described. Patterned films have high resolution. Whether cured in nitrogen or in air, the formulation produces a film with optical, electrical, thermal, and mechanical properties desired for many microelectronic applications, such as a planarization layer or insulation layer in display applications. A self-priming, air-curable nonphoto- sensitive BCB material is also described.
