  • Many longitudinal pipes in ships are subject to considerable loads, caused by hull girder bending in the ships and/or thermal loads in some special pipes through which fluids with highly abnormal temperatures are conveyed. As these loads may cause failure in the pipes or their supporting structures, loops have been widely adopted to prevent such failure, based on the idea that they can lower the stress level in a pipe byabsorbing some portion of these loads. But as the loops also have some negative effects, such as causing extra manufacturing cost, deteriorating the function of the pipe, and occupying extra space, the number and dimensions of these loops need to be minimized. This research developed design formulas for pipe loops, modeling them as a spring element, for which the axial stiffness is calculated based on the beam theory, incorporating the flexibility effect of the straight portion of the pipe. The accuracy of the proposed design formulas was verified by comparing two results obtained from the proposed formulas and MSC/NASTRAN. This paper concludes with a sample application of the proposed formulas, showing their efficiency.

  • Recently, significant progress has been made in performance-based engineering methods that rely mainly on nonlinear static seismic analysis procedures. The Capacity Spectrum Method (CSM) and the Displacement Coefficient Method (DCM) are the representative nonlinear static seismic analysis procedures. In order to evaluate the applicability of the procedures to the seismic evaluation and design process of new and existing structures, the accuracy of both CSM and DCM should be evaluated in advance. The accuracy of seismic responses by the nonlinear static procedures is evaluated in comparison with the shaking table test results for the structural wall specimen subjected to the far field and near field earthquakes. Also conducted are comparative studies where the shaking table test results are compared with those from nonlinear dynamic analysis procedures, i.e., Single-Degree-of-Freedom (SDOF), equivalent SDOF and Multi-Degree-of-Freedom (MDOF) systems.

  • This paper presents an investigation on the shear resistance of corrugated web steel beams (CWBs) with a circular web opening. A total of five specimens with different diameters of web openings were designed and tested with vertical load applied on the top flange at mid-span. The ultimate strengths, failure modes, and load versus middle displacement curves were obtained from the tests. Following the tests, numerical models of the CWBs were developed and validated against the test results. The influence of the web plate thickness, steel grade, opening diameter, and location on the shear strength of the CWBs was extensively investigated. An XGBoost machine learning model for shear resistance prediction was trained based on 256 CWB samples. The XGBoost model with optimal hyperparameters showed excellent accuracy and exceeded the accuracy of the available design equations. The effects of geometric parameters and material properties on the shear resistance were evaluated using the SHAP method.

  • Spectrum level for the acoustic roughness of wheels and rail surface should be periodically maintained under the limitation of ISO to reduce rolling noise of railway vehicles. Thus, in maintaining railway track, displacement sensor-based measuring devices are broadly used to measure the surface roughness and to perform spectral analysis. However, these measuring devices cause unexpected measuring errors since the displacement sensors are fixed at moving platforms and the main frame produces pitching motion during measurement. To increase the accuracy of the measured values, this paper has investigated the effects of design variables such as wheel base, additional wheels, and elastic deformation of wheels on the surface roughness and acoustic roughness spectrum.

  • There are 70 vertical and 70 horizontal correctors for Pohang Light Source. Until mid of 2000, power supplies for these correctors were based on 1990's technology, so the global orbit feedback system was not possible with poor 12 bit resolution. A new task force team was assembled to develop new power supplies with BESSY type DAC cards. After the project, two vertical correctors in each lattice were connected with new power supplies, and the global orbit feedback was available within the accuracy of 5 microns. However, this replacement was not enough to satisfy the beam stability requirement of 2 microns for PLS. We have launched another power supply design based on all digital technology. This attempt was completed within a year, and 80 units were assembled in house. Currently, the global orbit feedback system is running successfully with new digital power supplies and the compensation of chamber motion due to the thermal load by using digital displacement transducers attached on each BPMs.

  • Recent industrial requirements for highly precise shape processing have brought the electric discharge machining (EDM) in great need. High precision in EDM is primarily achieved by high performance controllers. However there exists inherent precision loss due to structural deformation. On this background, we study structural deformation characteristics of wire cut EDM via finite element (FE) analysis and axiomatic design. Two different wire cut EDMs are selected as analysis models. 3D CAD package I-Deas is first used to construct FE models of wire cut EDMs, and then ABAQUS FE code is used for following structural analysis. Pertinency of FE mesh refinement is discussed in terms of ${\eta}-factor$. It is shown that performance accuracy of EDM depends strongly on the structural characteristics. Some design enhancements are suggested in an axiomatic design point of view. Finally we provide weight and temperature induced displacement discrepancies between wire end points as position functions of each subframe.

  • The technique to design high performance small motors has been based on experimental data, which results from lots of cost, experience and time in manufacturing. Recently, as high-performance computer appears, many engineers use numerical methods to design and analyze electric machine. Since, the step motor which has very small air gap(0.02-0.05mm) is different from other electric machine in its structure. The shape of rotor teeth and stator teeth influence seriously on the torque characteristics. And it is operated over magnetic saturation point. Therefore, the design of step motor needs to solve nonlinear problem and to calculate magnetic field precisely. In this paper, we solve nonlinear problem by employing Finite Element Method and obtain torque-displacement characteristics for the design of step motor. We also manufacture VR step motor according to the obtained results, and measure some torque characteristics. Through comparing calculated results with experimental results, it is verified that FEM is very useful to design step motor, and the motor designed by our technique is improved in its step accuracy.

  • To research the dynamic response of the high-rise structure under the rocking ground motion, which we believed that the effect cannot be ignored, especially accompanied by vertical ground motion. Theoretical analysis and shaking table seismic simulation tests were used to study the response of a high-rise structure to excitation of a H-V-R ground motion that included horizontal, vertical, and rocking components. The use of a wavelet analysis filtering technique to extract the rocking component from data for the primary horizontal component in the first part, based on the principle of horizontal pendulum seismogram and the use of a wavelet analysis filtering technique. The dynamic equation of motion for a high-rise structure under H-V-R ground motion was developed in the second part, with extra P-△ effect due to ground rocking displacement was included in the external load excitation terms of the equation of motion, and the influence of the vertical component on the high-rise structure P-△ effect was also included. Shaking table tests were performed for H-V-R ground motion using a scale model of a high-rise TV tower structure in the third part, while the results of the shaking table tests and theoretical calculation were compared in the last part, and the following conclusions were made. The results of the shaking table test were consistent with the theoretical calculation results, which verified the accuracy of the theoretical analysis. The rocking component of ground motion significantly increased the displacement of the structure and caused an asymmetric displacement of the structure. Thus, the seismic design of an engineering structure should consider the additional P-△ effect due to the rocking component. Moreover, introducing the vertical component caused the geometric stiffness of the structure to change with time, and the influence of the rocking component on the structure was amplified due to this effect.

  • This paper utilizes LS-DYNA software to numerically investigate impact response and damage evaluation of fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) bars-reinforced ultra-high-performance concrete (UHPC) composite beams (FRP-UHPC beams). Three-dimensional finite element (FE) models are established and calibrated by using literature-based static and impact tests, demonstrating high accuracy in simulating FRP-UHPC beams under impact loading. Parametric analyses explore the effects of impact mass, impactor height, FRP bar type and diameter, and clear span length on dynamic response and damage modes. Two failure modes emerge: tensile failure with bottom longitudinal reinforcement fracture and compression failure with local concrete compression near the impact region. Impact mass or height variation under the same impact energy significantly affects the first peak impact force, but minimally influences peak midspan displacement with a difference of no more than 5% and damage patterns. Increasing static flexural load-carrying capacity enhances FRP-UHPC beam impact resistance, reducing displacement deformation by up to 30%. Despite similar static load-carrying capacities, different FRP bars result in varied impact resistance. The paper proposes a damage assessment index based on impact energy, static load-carrying capacity, and clear span length, correlating well with beam end rotation. Their linearly-fitting coefficient was 1.285, 1.512, and 1.709 for the cases with CFRP, GFRP, and BFRP bars, respectively. This index establishes a foundation for an impact-resistant design method, including a simplified formula for peak midspan displacement assessment.

  • In this paper, we propose an array sensing detection method for smelting of submerged arc furnaces (SAF) based on electromagnetic radiation. AC magnetic field generated by electrode currents and molten currents in the furnace is reflected outside of the furnace. According to the spatial distribution of electromagnetic field a radiation model of SAF is built. We design a 3D magnetic field sensing array system in order to collect the magnetic field information. Through the collected information, the current distribution characteristics of SAF are described and the key parameters of smelting are obtained. Theoretical simulation and field test show that the curves acquired by the sensing array can accurately reflect the information of the relative displacement when the relative displacement between the array and electrode is 10 cm. Compared with the detection method of 3D single point, the proposed array sensing method of magnetic field obtains better results in terms of real-time and accuracy, and has good practical value for industrial measurement.
