Estimation of passive earth pressure is an important factor in anchor block, temporary retaining wall and support block of raker that resist lateral earth pressure. In practice, due to ease of use, it is common to estimate the earth pressure using the theory of Coulomb and Rankine, which assumes the failure plane as a straight line. However, the passive failure plane generated by friction between the wall surface and the soil forms a complex failure plane: a curve near the wall and a flat plane near the ground surface. In addition, the limit displacement where passive earth pressure is generated is larger compared to where the active earth pressure is generated. Thus, it is essential to calculate the passive earth pressure that occurs at the allowable displacement range in order to apply the passive earth pressure to the design for structural stability reasons. This study analyzed the mobilized passive earth pressured to various displacement ranges within the passive limit displacement range using the semi-empirical method considering the complex failure plane.

One major problem in the model testing is the boundary effect and size effect caused by the limit in the size of the container. To overcome this problem, various types of laminar boxes are gradually manufactured and used in the shaking table test, which ideally has zero stiffness to horizontal shear. In this study, a small-scale laminar box is manufactured, which is composed of 6 thin aluminum rectangular hollow plates, and its inside dimensions are 300 mm length by 200 mm width by 350 mm depth. Shaking table tests are performed both with the laminar box and the rigid box under the same conditions, where displacements and accelerations are measured at various points of the box and model ground. As result of analyzing the measured data, during the propagation of input seismic motion from the bottom to the ground surface, the relative displacement of the model ground and the amplification of acceleration is hardly amplified in the rigid box. Because of the effect of stress waves reflecting from the rigid wall, the acceleration is slightly decreased at the edge in the rigid box. The laminar box, manufactured in this study, has a problem in that the soil behavior at the edge of ground surface is affected by the inertia force of the top layer due to its excessive self-weight.
This paper presents analysis of the interaction between tunnel and Qanat with a particular interest for the optimization of Qanat shape using the discrete element code, PFC2D, and the results will be compared with the FEM results of PLAXIS2D. For these concerns, using software PFC2D based on Discrete Element Method (DEM), a model with dimension of 100m ⁎ 100 m was prepared. A circular tunnel with dimension of 9 m was situated 20 m below the ground surface. Also one Qanat was situated perpendicularly above the tunnel roof. Distance between Qanat center and ground surface was 8 m. Five different shapes for Qanat were selected i.e., square, semi-circular, vertical ellipse, circular and horizontal ellipse. Confining pressure of 5 MPa was applied to the model. The vertical displacement of balls situated in ground surface was picked up to measure the ground subsidence. Also two measuring circles were situated at the tunnel roof and at the Qanat roof to check the vertical displacements. The properties of the alluvial soil of Tehran city are: γdry=19 (KN/㎥), E= 750 (kg/㎠), ν=0.35, c=0.3(kg/㎠), φ=34°. In order to validate the DEM results, a comparison between the numerical results (obtained in this study) and analytical and field monitoring have been done. The PFC2D results are compared with the FEM results. The results shows that when Qanat has rectangular shape, the tensile stress concentration at the Qanat corners has maximum value while it has minimum value for vertical ellipse shape. The ground subsidence for Qanat rectangular shape has maximum value while it has minimum value for ellipse shape of Qanat. The vertical displacements at the tunnel roof for Qanat rectangular shape has maximum value while it has minimum value for ellipse shape of Qanat. Historical shape of Qante approved the finding of this research.
Radar interferometric phase is sensitive to both ground topography and coherent surface displacement. The basic tactics of differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR) technique are to separate the two effects. Applications of DInSAR to Duk-Po area in Busan were studied. In the study area, an abrupt subsidence, possibly caused by sub-way construction, was observed by JERS-1 SAR interferometry. Differential interferograms were generated using twenty-three JERS-1 SAR data acquired between April 24, 1992, and August 7, 1998. Because the area is relatively flat with little topographic relief the topographic effects were not removed. A phase filtering and interferogram techniques were applied to increase fringe clarity as well as to decrease decorrelation error. The stacking improves the quality of interferograms especially when the displacement is discontinuous. The interferograms clearly show the evidence of subsidence along Duk-Po subway railroad. These results demonstrate that the interferogram stacking technique can improve the detectability of radar interferometry to an abrupt displacement and DInSAR is useful to geological engineering applications.

The seismic damage assessment to the postulated earthquake is attempted for the buildings in the model district of Seoul City. The capacity spectrum method is employed in which the vulnerability functions are expressed as functions of the spectral displacement. the database of the building stock is constructed and managed using Geographic Information System software. The model district is selected to represent the typical structural and residential characteristics of Seoul City The structural properties were collected from the design documents. The field inspections were carried out to find out the current status of the building. They are classified into 11 structural types. The fragility curves in HazUS are employed, The ground motions from the postulated earthquakes are simulated using the Boor's methods, The surface soil in the district is classified into 3 profiles using the depth as the parameter. The one-dimensional wave propagation method is used to calculate he filtered ground motion through surface soil layer. The average spectrum of this sample time histories is used as the demand curves. The calculated results are expressed in maps using GIS software ArcView 3.0a
This paper investigates the development of failure surfaces induced by an embankment on soft marine clay deposits and the characteristics of such surfaces through numerical simulations and its comparative study with monitoring results. It is well known that the factor of safety of embankment slopes is closely related to the vertical loading, including the height of the embankment. That is, an increase in the embankment height reduces the factor of safety. However, few studies have examined the relationship between the lateral movement of soft soil beneath the embankment and the factor of safety. In addition, no study has investigated the distribution of the pore pressure coefficient B value along the failure surface. This paper conducts a continuum analysis using finite difference methods to characterize the development of failure surfaces during embankment construction on soft marine clay deposits. The results of the continuum analysis for failure surfaces, stress, displacement, and the factor of safety can be used for the management of embankment construction. In failure mechanism, it has been validated that a large shear displacement causes change of stress and pore pressure along the failure surface. In addition, the pore pressure coefficient B value decreases along the failure surface as the embankment height increases. This means that the rate of change in stress is higher than that in pore pressure.
The ballast track, the most common type of conventional railroad track in Korea, is deteriorated by abrasion of ballast, it's penetration into roadbed, and rugged surface of roadbed caused by cyclic loading of train. Persistent occurrence of those phenomena lead to insufficient drain capacity, one of major factors in track design, and it increases pore water pressure and decreases of shear strength under rainfall condition leading to unstable roadbed. In this study, cylindrical model tests are executed for 3 types of geotextile applying cyclic loading in order to observe the characteristics of displacement and bearing capacity of geotextile, and undrained condition has been applied for 0 day, 3 days and 7 days to each geotextiles. The results showed that there was about 1% difference at the final displacement rates between reinforced soils and nature soils and the displacement of the ground surface increases along with the degrees of the saturation. And in case that water contents exceeds the threshold, it is also apparent that weight and tensile strength of geotextile influences displacement of the ground surface. And the larger weight of geotextile is, the smaller plastic displacement. It is evaluated that non-woven fabric comes into effect on reducing the bearing capacity but, the weight of geotextile has little influence on it.
A pile is a structural element that is used to transfer external loads from superstructures and has been widely utilized in construction fields all over the world. The method of installing a pile into the ground should be selected based on geotechnical conditions, location, site status, environmental factors, and construction costs, among others. It can be divided into two types: direct hammering and preboring. The direct hammering method installs a pile into the bearing layer, such as rock, using a few types of hammer, generating a considerable amount of pile driving-induced vibration. The vibration from pile driving influences adjacent structures and the ground; therefore, quantitatively investigating the effects of vibration is inevitably required. In this study, two-dimensional dynamic numerical modeling and analysis are performed using the finite difference method to investigate the influence on the adjacent slope, including temporary supporting system. Time-dependent loading induced by pile driving is estimated and used in the numerical analysis. Consequently, large surface displacement is estimated due to surface waves and less wave deflection, and refraction at the surface. The total displacement decreases with the increase of the distance from the source. However, lateral displacement at the top of the slope shows a larger value than vertical displacement, and the overall displacement tends to be concentrated near the face of the slope.

Recently, as the development of underground spaces has become active due to rapid urbanization and population density, interest in the ground behavior according to the construction of underground spaces is increasing. In large cities with high population density and many buildings, ground subsidence has a great impact on structures and there may be a risk of collapse, so the analysis of ground behavior due to underground construction is essential. Previous studies have been conducted on the subsidence pattern of the surface and the deformation of the tunnel when constructing the tunnel, but analysis has rarely been conducted by using actual topographic information. Therefore, this study analyzed the difference in ground behavior between the actual topography and the flat topography. As a result, it was confirmed that ground settlement occurs at higher elevations, such as in mountainous topography, and when the numerical analysis is performed considering topographical information, the crown settlement of the tunnel is up to about approx. It showed a difference of 10 mm, and it was found that the sensitivity was less in the case of displacement of tunnel wall compared to the crown settlement and ground settlement. The numerical analysis considering the actual GIS-based topographic information presented in this study can be used to obtain more accurate surface subsidence data to understand the behavior of the upper structure due to tunnel excavation.

Some methods were proposed to predict lateral flow due to embankments for road constructions on soft grounds, in which vertical drains were placed. In order to investigate the prediction methods of lateral flow, 200 field monitoring data for embankments in thirteen road construction sites at western and southern coastal areas of the Korean Peninsula were analyzed. For analyzing the relationship between the safety factor of embankment slope and the horizontal displacement in soft grounds where horizontal drain mats were placed, it was reliable to apply the maximum horizontal displacement in soft ground instead of the horizontal displacement at ground surface. The maximum horizontal displacement was developed less than 50mm in fields where the safety factor of slope was more than 1.4, while the one was developed more than 100mm in fields where the safety factor of slope was less than 1.2. In safe fields where the maximum horizontal displacement were developed within 50mm, lateral flow would not happen since shear deformation was not appeared. On the other hand, shear failure would happen in the fields where the maximum horizontal displacement were developed more than 100mm. In such fields, embankments might be continued after some appropriate countermeasures should be prepared. Safe embankments can be performed on soft grounds, in which the stability number is less than 3.0 and the safety factor for bearing is more than 1.7. However, if the stability number is more than 4.3 and the safety factor for bearing is less than 1.2, shear deformation would begin and even shear failure would happen.
