  • In this paper, the theoretical method of measuring the tunnel convergence and underground displacement, the objective indices of assessing safety for tunnel construction, using the fiber optic sensor is studied by developing the program to automatically measure them. The model test of Con'c beam is conducted to evaluate reliability of the fiber optic sensor. Furthermore, using the RS232 communication protocol as well as Visual C# and Visual C++, the programming tools, the program was developed to detect automatically the measured value of the fiber optic sensor, calculate the tunnel convergence and underground displacement, predict the deformed shape of the tunnel, and evaluate loosening zone due to the tunnel excavation.

  • The frequency responses on the sub-pixel evaluation technique were investigated using the Monte-calro Simulation technique. The frequency response by the FFT based cross-correlation gives very good results, however, the gain loss does exist for the small displacement, (less than 0.5 pixel). While, the no gain loss is observed in the Direct Cross-correlation, however, the sub-pixel accuracy was limited to be about 0.1 pixel, i.e., it could not detect the small displacement. To detect the higher accurate sub-pixel displacement, the gradient based technique is the best. For the small interrogation area (e.g., 4x4), only the gradient technique can detect the small displacement correctly.

  • A cylindrical capacitive displacement sensor (CCS) was developed and applied for monitoring end milling processes. Dynamic characteristics of a spindle-assembly were measured using the CCS and a designed magnetic exciter. The technique to extract the spindle displacement component caused only by cutting from the measured signals using the CCS was proposed in the paper. Using CCS signals and FRF (Frequency Response Function) derived from dynamics of the spindle tool system, dynamic cutting forces are estimated quantitatively.

  • In this paper, we propose a displacement measurement method based on deep learning using image data obtained from tensile tests of a material specimen. We focus on the fact that the sequential images during the tension are generated and the displacement of the specimen is represented in the image data. So, we designed sample generation model which makes sequential images of specimen. The behavior of generated images are similar to the real specimen images under tensile force. Using generated images, we trained and validated our model. In the deep neural network, sequential images are assigned to a multi-channel input to train the network. The multi-channel images are composed of sequential images obtained along the time domain. As a result, the neural network learns the temporal information as the images express the correlation with each other along the time domain. In order to verify the proposed method, we conducted experiments by comparing the deformation measuring performance of the neural network changing the displacement range of images.

  • The objectives of this study are to investigate effective stiffness of circular reinforced bridge columns and to provide reasonable effective stiffness equations for seismic design to the current Korean Bridge Design Standard. The material nonlinear analysis was conducted for 5184 columns of which variables were the concrete compressive stress, the steel yielding stress, the longitudinal steel location parameter, the longitudinal steel ratio, the axial load level, and the diameter of section. The current Korean Bridge Design Standard generally used the gross section stiffness because of unclear provision, it may be non-conservative because of being evaluated greater design seismic force and less design displacement than those of the abroad provision. Therefore, the proposed effective stiffness equations include three variables such as : the longitudinal steel location parameter, the longitudinal steel ratio, and the axial load ratio. Two equations of effective stiffness are proposed which may be used for earthquake force estimation and for earthquake displacement estimation, respectively.

  • In order to apply the Leak-Before-Break(LBB)concept to nuclear piping, accurate estimation of J-integral and crack opening displacement(COD) is essential for complex loading, such as combined tension and bending. This paper proposes a new engineering method to estimate J-integral and the COD for circumferential through-wall cracked pipes subject to combined tension and bending loading. The proposed method to estimate the COD is validated against three published pipe test data, generated from a monotonically increasing bending load with a constant internal pressure, which shows excellent agreements.

  • Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) is a relatively new cementitous material, which has been developed to give significantly higher material performance than conventional concrete or engineered cementitious composites. In this study, reverse analysis of notched UHPC beam was conducted according to the experimental result of load-displacement. Conclusively, tensile strength vs. CMOD (Crack Mouth Opening Displacement) was calculated as an approximated method for the direct tensile strength estimation.

  • We present a two step approach for estimating the motionand sturcture parameters from region orrespondences in two frames. Given four or more region corresondences on the same planar surface, the motion and planar orientation parameters are first linearly estimated based on second-order approximation of the displacement field of the image plane. Then, using this linear estimate as an initial guess, a nonlinear estimate is obtained by iteratively minimizing an objective function using the exact experession of the displacement field. The objective function involves the centroids of corresponding regions and relationships among low-order moments. Through simulations, we show that the two-step region-based approach gives robust estimates. The performance of nonlinear region-based estimation is compared with that of linear region-based and point-based methods. Experimental results for two image pairs, on esynthetic and one real, ar epresented to show the practical applicability of our approach.

  • The analytical realization of uncoupled system was introduced in this study using times series and its spectrum analysis. The ARMAX spectra of time series methods were compared with the conventional FFT spectrum. Also, the response of second order system uncoupled was solved using the Runge-Kutta Gill method. In this numerical analysis, the displacement, velocity and acceleration were calculated. The displacement response among them was used for the power spectrum analysis. The ARMAX algorithm in time series was proved to be appropriate for the mode estimation and spectrum analysis. Using the separate response of first and second mode, each modes were calculated separately and the response of mixed modes was also analyzed for the mode estimation using several time series methods.

  • For robot navigation and visual reconstruction, structure from motion (SFM) is an active issue in computer vision community and its properties arc also becoming well understood. In this paper, when using stereo image sequence and direct method as a tool for SFM, we present a new method for overcoming bas-relief ambiguity. We first show that the direct methods, based on optical flow constraint equation, are also intrinsically exposed to such ambiguity although they introduce robust methods. Therefore, regarding the motion and depth estimation by the robust and direct method as approximated ones. we suggest a method that refines both stereo displacement and motion displacement with sub-pixel accuracy, which is the central process f3r improving its ambiguity. Experiments with real image sequences have been executed and we show that the proposed algorithm has improved the estimation accuracy.
