Accurate measurement of KIC values for gas pipeline steels is important for assessing pipe safety using failure assessment diagrams. As direct measurement of KIC was impossible for the API X70 pipeline steel, multi-specimen fracture tests were conducted to measure JIC using three-point bend geometry. The J values were calculated from load-displacement (F-δ) plots, and the associated crack extensions were measured from the fracture surface of test specimens. Valid data points were found for the constructed J-Δa plot resulting in JIC=356kN/m. More data points were added analytically to the J-Δa plot to increase the number of data points without performing additional experiments for different J-Δa zones where test data was unavailable. Consequently, displacement (δ) and crack-growth (Δa) from multi-specimen tests (with small displacements) were used simultaneously, resulting in the variation of Δa-δ (crack growth law) and δ-Δa obtained for this steel. For new Δa values, corresponding δ values were first calculated from δ-Δa. Then, corresponding J values for the obtained δ values were calculated from the area under the F-δ record of a full-fractured specimen (with large displacement). Given Δa and J values for new data points, the developed J-Δa plot with extra data points yielded a satisfactory estimation of JIC=345kN/m with only a -3.1% error. This is promising and showed that the developed technique could ease the estimation of JIC significantly and reduce the time and cost of expensive extra fracture toughness tests.

In this study, the displacement-based design concept, the performance by the existing reinforced concerte column and steel reinforced concrete composite column for SRC purchased the maximum design ground acceleration improvement compared to the performance design. SRC have several advantages such as strength enhancement and high ductility. H-beam or steel tubes were used for embedded elements of the SRC composite columns. SRC cross-section for the P-M diagram and analysis on the nominal bending monent SRC designed for composite columns for disparity estimation is presented to the displacement-based seismic design. Performance improvement of the performance-based design performance targets for the design seismic displacement and design criteria for the direct displacement-based design methods and to improve the seismic performance due to the displacement coefficient method is proposed to design. SRC compared with the RC column designed to improve the performance and displacement ductility ratio displacement results in the performance design results showed significantly improved performance.

This study presents a simple method which can estimate displacement using measured strain response of simply supported girder bridges. The basic concept of the present method is derived from a relation between displacement and strain, and is generalized by introducing analytical tool. Static and dynamic laboratory test are conducted on simply supported plate which is designed to respond dynamically similar to actual bridges to experimentally verify the present method, and displacement and strain are measured at the midpoint of specimen. Displacement estimated by using measured strain is well agreed with measured one. This study demonstrates that the present method is suitable for estimating displacement of real simply supported bridge, in which the installation of a displacement transducer at the fixed reference point is difficult.

The estimation of recurrence interval for fault activity and earthquake is an important input parameter for seismic hazard assessment. In this study, the methods of recurrences interval estimation were reviewed and tentative calculation was performed for age dating data which have uncertainty. Age dating data come from previous studies of Ulsan fault system which is a well developed lineament in the southeastern part of korean Peninsula. Age dating for fault gouges, parent rocks, Quaternary sediments and veins were carried out by several researchers through various methods. Recurrence interval for fault activity was estimated on the basis of the age dating data of minor fault gouge and sediments during past 3Ma. The estimated recurrence interval was about 430-500 ka. Exact estimation of recurrence interval for fault activity need to compile more geological data and fault characteristics such as fault length, amount of displacement, slip rate and accurate fault movement age. In the future, the methods and results of fault recurrence interval estimation should be considered for establishing the criteria for domestic active fault definition.
This paper describes a distance estimation method of object's motion in soccer image sequence by tracking field features. And we quantitatively evaluate the estimation accuracy We suppose that the input image sequence is taken with a camera on static axis and includes only zooming and panning transformation between frames. Adaptive template matching is adopted for non-rigid object tracking. For background compensation, feature templates selected from reference frame image are matched in following frames and the matched feature point pairs are used in computing Affine motion parameters. A perspective displacement field model is used for estimating the real distance between two position on Input Image. To quantitatively evaluate the accuracy of the estimation, we synthesized a 3 dimensional virtual stadium with graphic tools and experimented on the synthesized 2 dimensional image sequences. The experiment shows that the average of the error between the actual moving distance and the estimated distance is 1.84%.

Recently, the advance of accurate dynamic displacement measurement devices, such as GPS, computer vision, and optic laser sensor, has enhanced the structural monitoring technology. In this study, the dynamic displacement data was used to verify the applicability of the structural physical parameter estimation method through subspace system identification. The subspace system identification theory for estimating state-space model from measured data and physics-based interpretation for deriving the physical parameter of the estimated system are presented. Three-degree-freedom steel structures were fabricated for the experimental verification of the theory in this study. Laser displacement sensor and accelerometer were used to measure the displacement data of each floor and the acceleration data of the shaking table. Discrete state-space model generated from measured data was verified for precision. The discrete state-space model generated from the measured data extracted the floor stiffness of the building after accuracy verification. In addition, based on the story stiffness extracted from the state space model, five column stiffening and damage samples were set up to extract the change rate of story stiffness for each sample. As a result, in case of reinforcement and damage under the same condition, the stiffness change showed a high matching rate.
In recent years the monitoring of structural behavior through acquisition of vibrational data has become common practice. In addition, recent advances in sensor development have made the collection of diverse dynamic information feasible. Other than the commonly collected acceleration information, Global Position System (GPS) receivers and non-contact, optical techniques have also allowed for the synchronous collection of highly accurate displacement data. The fusion of this heterogeneous information is crucial for the successful monitoring and control of structural systems especially when aiming at real-time estimation. This task is not a straightforward one as measurements are inevitably corrupted with some percentage of noise, often leading to imprecise estimation. Quite commonly, the presence of noise in acceleration signals results in drifting estimates of displacement states, as a result of numerical integration. In this study, a new approach based on a time domain identification method, namely the Unscented Kalman Filter (UKF), is proposed for correcting the "drift effect" in displacement or rotation estimates in an online manner, i.e., on the fly as data is attained. The method relies on the introduction of artificial white noise (WN) observations into the filter equations, which is shown to achieve an online correction of the drift issue, thus yielding highly accurate motion data. The proposed approach is demonstrated for two cases; firstly, the illustrative example of a single degree of freedom linear oscillator is examined, where availability of acceleration measurements is exclusively assumed. Secondly, a field inspired implementation is presented for the torsional identification of a tall tower structure, where acceleration measurements are obtained at a high sampling rate and non-collocated GPS displacement measurements are assumed available at a lower sampling rate. A multi-rate Kalman Filter is incorporated into the analysis in order to successfully fuse data sampled at different rates.

Main objective of the present study is to determine the statistical properties and suitable probability distribution functions of spectral displacements from nonlinear static and nonlinear dynamic analysis within the frame work of Monte Carlo simulation for typical low rise and high rise RC framed buildings located in zone III and zone V and designed as per Indian seismic codes. Probabilistic analysis of spectral displacement is useful for strength assessment and loss estimation. To the author's knowledge, no study is reported in literature on comparison of spectral displacement including the uncertainties in capacity and demand in Indian context. In the present study, uncertainties in capacity of the building is modeled by choosing cross sectional dimensions of beams and columns, density and compressive strength of concrete, yield strength and elastic modulus of steel and, live load as random variables. Uncertainty in demand is modeled by choosing peak ground acceleration (PGA) as a random variable. Nonlinear static analysis (NSA) and nonlinear dynamic analysis (NDA) are carried out for typical low rise and high rise reinforced concrete framed buildings using IDARC 2D computer program with the random sample input parameters. Statistical properties are obtained for spectral displacements corresponding to performance point from NSA and maximum absolute roof displacement from NDA and suitable probability distribution functions viz., normal, Weibull, lognormal are examined for goodness-of-fit. From the hypothesis test for goodness-of-fit, lognormal function is found to be suitable to represent the statistical variation of spectral displacement obtained from NSA and NDA.
In order to identify damage of highway bridges rapidly, a method for damage identification using dynamic response of bridge induced by moving vehicle and static test data is proposed. To locate damage of the structure, displacement energy damage index defined from the energy of the displacement response time history is adopted as the indicator. The displacement response time histories of bridge structure are obtained from simulation of vehicle-bridge coupled vibration analysis. The vehicle model is considered as a four-degree-of-freedom system, and the vibration equations of the vehicle model are deduced based on the D'Alembert principle. Finite element method is used to discretize bridge and finite element model is set up. According to the condition of displacement and force compatibility between vehicle and bridge, the vibration equations of the vehicle and bridge models are coupled. A Newmark-${\beta}$ algorithm based professional procedure VBAP is developed in MATLAB, and used to analyze the vehicle-bridge system coupled vibration. After damage is located by employing the displacement energy damage index, the damage extent is estimated through the least-square-method based model updating using static test data. At last, taking one simply supported bridge as an illustrative example, some damage scenarios are identified using the proposed damage identification methodology. The results indicate that the proposed method is efficient for damage localization and damage extent estimation.
One of the representative methods of optical flow is a gradient method which estimates the movement of an object based on the differential of image brightness. However, the method is ineffective for large displacement of the object and many improved methods have been proposed to copy with such limitations. One of these improved techniques is the multigrid processing, which is used in many optical flow algorithms. As an alternative novel technique we have been proposing an orthogonal functional expansion method, where whole displacements are expanded from low frequency terms. This method is expected to be applicable to flow estimation with large displacement and deformation including expansion and contraction, which are difficult to cope with by conventional optical flow methods. In the orthogonal functional expansion method, the apparent displacement field is calculated iteratively by a projection method which utilizes derivatives of the invariant constraint equations of brightness constancy. One feature of this method is that differentiation of the input image is not necessary, thereby reducing sensitivity to noise. In this paper, we apply our method to several real images in which the objects undergo large displacement and/or deformation including expansion. We demonstrate the effectiveness of the orthogonal functional expansion method by comparing with conventional methods including our optimally scaled multigrid optical flow algorithm.
