  • A stack must be designed to 1) reduce or eliminate rainfall or snowfall into a industrial exhaust system, 2) minimize a resistance to flow, 3) maximize the vertical dispersion of the contaminated air and 4) minimize maintenance. The weather cone stacks and the elbow-type stacks are very popular in Korea. But they add some resistance to the exhaust system resulting in reduction of air flow rate, but also deflect the noxious contaminants downward in undiluted form. To solve these problems, ACGIH (American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists) suggested the vertical discharge stack with concentric space between the upper stack with larger diameter and the lower stack with smaller diameter. The preliminary test showed that the vertical discharge stacks did not have the good rainfall protection. The reversed cone were newly devised to satisfy the requirements for the good stack. Subsequently, the amount of rain being penetrated through the stacks was measured while the stacks were simultaneously and naturally exposed to rain in the same area outside. Test results indicate that none of the stacks tested completely exclude rain. The efficiency of rainfall protection and the pressure loss coefficient were compared. The temporary conclusion was reached to the point that the reversed cone stack is the best one. Further research is underway.

  • In Korea, asbestos related diseases (ARDs) associated with occupational and environmental asbestos exposures have been reported, and commercial products contaminated with asbestos have gathered huge public attentions recently. Review of previous studies was conducted. Whereas asbestos consumptions among developed countries have decreased, those of Asian countries have increased, which showed typical international transfer of hazardous industries. In Korea residents around former asbestos mines had ARDs, which were reported in many countries such as South Africa, Canada and Australia. ARDs among residents around asbestos factories were found in many countries such as United Kingdom, United States and Italia, and increased relative risks were reported among residents around asbestos textile factories in Korea. Increased air asbestos concentrations by environmental asbestos leakages from factories were correlated with higher malignant mesothelioma incidence rates. When air dispersion model applied, excess incidence rate as far as 2.5 km from a factory were observed. As mesothelioma incidence rate, a representative index of ARD, in Korea has not reported systemically, mandatory reporting system by health personnel who diagnose the disease needs to be introduced. It is hard to conclude that commercials with contaminated asbestos do not have adverse health effects, and further studies are needed to solve these public questions.

  • The air quality near the backfilled site area is significantly deteriorated during and even after the curing period of the backfill materials. Hazardous gases such as NH3 and CO2 may leak out prolongedly from the mined-out sites backfilled with the composite carbonate-based material; leakage can be observed at the underground working sites as well as on the surface. At operating mines, underground gas leakage will severely aggravate the workplace environment. The ventilation schemes should supply sufficient air to dilute the contaminated air, and control the toxic gas leakage and dispersion. This study shows the applicability of pressurization ventilation system to control gas leakage and dispersion at the backfilled underground mine site.

  • The volatile organic compounds exposure is governed by the source distance and dispersion of the pollutant into air and groundwater. The purpose of this study was to validate suggested models for the prediction of concentration distributions. The study design was organized into different methods to simulate industry site. The distribution models generally showed a fair agreement with measured data. For graphical representation of concentration of volatile hydrocarbon, it has to obtain a continuous representation of the contamination of the site. Therefore, the used interpolative methods examined for this project are the IDW(inverse Distance Weighting) and kriging method. In the results, in summary, all two different methods can be used to quantify exposures at a particular source area, and thus provide, a solid foundation for making risk-based decisions. All the calculations can be performed using Excel's built-in functions, and the capabilities of geospatial analysis allow the results to be displayed visually. However, anyone who uses these methods should understand all of the assumptions and limitation.
