  • The disease occurrence on red-pepper plants in relation to cultivation methods of the farmers and to the precipitation was investigated in northern Kyungbuk Province. The major diseases were mosaic, anthracnose and Phytophthora blight in 2007 and 2008. In 2008, mosaic was more severe than that in 2007, but the other diseases were milder than those in 2007. A negative correlation between the mosaic incidence in the harvesting season and the precipitation during May was recognized. On the other hand, there was a positive correlation between the severity of Phytophthora blight in September and the precipitation during August. The occurrence of anthracnose, Phytophthora blight and mosaic in the surveyed pepper plants grown in plastic houses were milder than those in fields, although the farmers cultivating red-pepper plants in the plastic houses were less than 5% in the northern Kyungbuk Province.

  • Research was initiated to investigate vegetation characteristics of native ('Pureundle' and 'Sewon') and introduced ('Brilliant' and 'Midnight') Kentucky bluegrass (KB, Poa pratensis L.) varieties by soil-seed applying system on a cut-slope in May 17, 2008. There were no statistic differences observed in soil hardness and soil moisture content while significant differences were observed in surface coverage rate, height and disease occurrence in native and introduced KB varieties. The introduced 'Brilliant' KB was highest in the surface coverage rate from the early period of seeding to August 11, 2008. The surface coverage rate of introduced varieties were high when compared to native varieties in their early growth stage. But native varieties reached to equal surface coverage rate with the introduced varieties when three months after seeding. The height of 'Pureundle' and 'Brilliant' KBs were high compared with Midnight and Sewon KBs. 'Pureundle' and 'Brilliant' KBs were damaged by disease whereas there were no disease occurrence in 'Midnight' and 'Sewon' KBs. Probably, the disease occurrence was close related with the height of KBs not with native and introduced KB varieties. These results indicate that the growth of KB on a cut-slope are statistically affected by varieties in early growth stage of this experiment but reach equal rate between native and introduced KB varieties in three months after seeding. This growth characteristics implies the huge potential of native KB varieties seeding for cut-slope vegetation. Considering that native KB varieties are adapted to a environment and have no risk of causing disturbance to the ecosystem compared to the introduced KB varieties, the use of them as native varieties for a cut-slope vegetation can be increased.

  • Purpose: In this study a systematic review and meta-analysis investigated the impact of non-pharmacological interventions on major adverse cardiac events (MACE) in patients with coronary artery disease who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). Methods: A literature search was performed using PubMed, Cochrane Library, EMBASE, and Cumulative Index to Nursing & Allied Health Literature databases up to November 2023. The risk of bias was assessed using the Cochrane Risk of Bias 2.0 tool. Effect sizes and 95% confidence intervals were calculated using R software (version 4.3.2). Results: Eighteen randomized studies, involving 2,898 participants, were included. Of these, 16 studies with 2,697 participants provided quantitative data. Non-pharmacological interventions (education, exercise, and comprehensive) significantly reduced the risk of angina, heart failure, myocardial infarction, restenosis, cardiovascular-related readmission, and cardiovascular-related death. The subgroup meta-analysis showed that combined interventions were effective in reducing the occurrence of myocardial infarction (MI), and individual and group-based interventions had significant effects on reducing the occurrence of MACE. In interventions lasting seven months or longer, occurrence of decreased by 0.16 times, and mortality related to cardiovascular disease decreased by 0.44 times, showing that interventions lasting seven months or more were more effective in reducing MI and cardiovascular disease-related mortality. Conclusion: Further investigations are required to assess the cost-effectiveness of these interventions in patients undergoing PCI and validate their short- and long-term effects. This systematic review underscores the potential of non-pharmacological interventions in decreasing the incidence of MACE and highlights the importance of continued research in this area (PROSPERO registration number: CRD42023462690).

  • Twenty two different disease on strawberry have been reported in Korea. Their occurrence patterns were depended on the varieties cultivated. Fusarium wilt occurred seriously on var. Hokowase, a variety used for the fields or semi-forcing culture. In recent years, however, anthracnose occurred remarkably as the acreage of forcing culture increases. Consequently, anthracnose reduced the stand rate and yield of the strawberry. Average occurrence rate of anthracnose was 36.9% on major strawberry cropping areas. Nyoho and Akihime, which are popular varieties for the forcing culture, are considered to be susceptible, but Holiwase and Suhong are resistant against this disease. Colletotrichum gloeosporioides and Glomerella cingulata have been reported as casual agents for this disease in Korea. C. gloeosporoides was recently reported, but C. fragariae, known to be a strong pathogen in foreign countries, has bot been found yet in Korea. These two fungal pathogens showed significant differences in some characteristics such as major infection parts of plant and responses to temperatures as well as benomyl resistance. In addition, C. gloeosporioides is more pathogenic than G. cingulata. Because vinly sheltering is effective for control of anthracnose to protect water disposal of the pathogen during the seedling stages, it is strongly recommend to use this method in conjunction with integrated control programs.

  • Pseudomonas aerusinosa infection was diagnosed in broiler chicks, and was submitted to the National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service in Korea. The total mortality rate was about 1,500 birds out of 22,000 broilers. Clinically, affected birds showed clinical signs including depression and anorexia with lameness and trembling of the leg. At necropsy, the dead broilers appeared to have omphalitis, yolk sac infection, fibrinous epicarditis, and fibrinous exudates in liver with swollen hock joint. Microscopically, there were multiple necrotic foci in the liver, fibrinous exudates in the heart, and infiltration of heterophils into the joint spaces of the hock joint. Pseudomonas aerusinosa was isolated from the heart, liver and hock joint, and the isolate was named P-200. In effort to estimate the virulence of P-200, 1-day-old chicks were challenged intramuscularly and intrayolksacally with the isolate. On the basis of mortality rate, the isolate P-200 was found to be highly virulent. This is the first report of an occurrence of Pseudomonas aerusinosa infection in broilers in Korea.

  • Occurrence of popcorn disease on mulberry fruits was surveyed in several locations in Korea from 2005 to 2007. The diseased fruits turned grayish white and changed to hard and black sclerotia during overwintering after falling onto the ground. Apothecia produced from overwintered sclerotia in the fields of mulberry trees were observed in early May. Two types of apothecia were produced from the sclerotia, which were cup-shaped or club-shaped. The fungus with cup-shaped apothecia was identified as Ciboria shiraiana, and that with club-shaped apothecia as Scleromitrula shiraiana. C. shiraiana occurred at the ratio of about 6 vs. 4 in the fields. Occurrence of the disease differed remarkably depending on years, locations, and varieties of mulberry trees investigated. Field survey of the disease incidence showed that Baekhahyeongsang, Dahojosaeng, Hasusang, a native variety and Sawonppong 22 were resistant to the disease, Cheongilppong, Daeseongppong, Guksang 20 and Turkey-D were moderately susceptible, and Cateneo, Moreji and Sanggwa were highly susceptible. Disease incidence in the fields mulched with nonwoven fabrics or plastic films was much lower than that in the non-mulched fields. Disease incidence in the fields mulched with rice straws was similar to that in the non-mulched fields.
