  • A design of stabilizing supervisory controller for discrete event dynamic systems(DEDS) is investigated in this paper. The notion of system stability is introduced for the supervisory control and the stable behavior is defined. A framework of stabilizing supervisory controller, which controls a given system to have stable behavior. is formulated and a design method is proposed for the stabilizing, supervisory controller.

  • In this paper we use discrete simulation method to get the criteria of system evaluation required in the case of designing the complicated probabilistic event system having discrete probabilistic variables and to search the effective and reliable alternatives to satisfy the objective value of the given system through on-line, single run within the short time period. If we find the alternative we construct the algorithm which change values of decision variables and determining alternative by using the stopping algorithm which end the simulation in the steady state of system. In order to prevent the loss of data when we analyze the acquired design alternative in the steady state we provide the background of the estimation of the autoregressive model and mean and confidence interval for evaluating correctly the objective function obtained by the small amount of output data through the short time period simulation.

  • Since a homing torpedo system consists of various subsystems, organic interactions of which dictate the performance of the torpedo system, it is necessary to estimate the effects of individual subsystems in order to obtain an optimized design of the overall system. This paper attempts to gain some insight into the detection mechanism of a torpedo run, and analyze the relative importance of various parameters of a torpedo system. A database for the analysis was generated using a simulation model based on the combined discrete event and discrete time architecture. Multiple search schemes, including the snake-search method, were applied to the torpedo model, and some parameters of the torpedo were found to be stochastic. We then analyzed the effectiveness of torpedo’s detection capability according to the torpedo speed, the target speed, and the maximum detection range.

  • The liquefaction process system is regarded as primary among all topside systems in LNG FPSO. This liquefaction process system is composed of many types of equipment. LNG equipment on offshore plants has quite different demands on the equipment compared to traditional onshore LNG plants, so the reliability analysis of this process system needs to be performed. This study investigates how DEVS formalism for discrete event simulation can be used to reliability analysis of the liquefaction cycle for LNG FPSO. The reliability analysis method based on DEVS formalism could be better model for reflecting the system configuration than the conventional reliability analysis methods, such as fault tree analysis and event tree analysis.

  • In general, simulation and analytic method are used for real system analysis. However, or date, there has been only the theoretical works on each approach. Therefore it is required that we study on the relationship between each approaches to obtain more reliable and correct system analysis results. In this paper, using SPN(Stochasitc Petri Net) formalism, we propose the method of output prediction of the DEVS(Discrete Event system Specification) simulation. For this we suggest a transformation algorithm which transform SPN form DEVS formalism based on the event scheduling world view and a verification algorithm for it. We then show an example to apply it to the real system, such that the Grocery Store System.

  • Uninterrupted power supply has become indispensable during the maintenance task of active electric power lines as a result of today's highly information-oriented society and increasing demand of electric utilities. The maintenance task has the risk of electric shock and the danger of falling from high place. Therefore it is necessary to realize an autonomous robot system using electro-hydraulic manipulator because hydraulic manipulators have the advantage of electric insulation. Meanwhile it is relatively difficult to realize autonomous assembly tasks particularly in the case of manipulating flexible objects such as electric lines. In this report, a discrete event control system is introduced for automatic assembly task of electric lines into sleeves as one of the typical task of active electric power lines. In the implementation of a discrete event control system, LVQNN (linear vector quantization neural network) is applied to the insertion task of electric lines to sleeves. In order to apply these proposed control system to the unknown environment, virtual learning data for LVQNN is generated by fuzzy inference. By the experimental results of two types of electric lines and sleeves, these proposed discrete event control and neural network learning algorithm are confirmed very effective to the insertion tasks of electric lines to sleeves as a typical task of active electric power maintenance tasks.

  • Simulation model of outdoor block movement of shipyard is implemented in this paper. The load of the outdoor workshops in a shipyard influences a mid-term planning and scheduling of the shipyard. Since the load analysis is expected in advance before confirming the planning and scheduling, a discrete event simulation (DES) may be a good solution. The accuracy of DES is up to the accurate modeling of Products, Processes, and Resources (PPR) included in a system. PPR in the outdoor system are clearly defined and the simulation model for the outdoor logistics is implemented by modeling the selective PPR with the help of a DES tool which is programmable by users. The simulation model is verified by comparing the results with the real shipyard data. The outputs through the simulation are discussed.

  • DEVS(Discrete Event Systems Specification) is a set theoretic formalism developed for specifying discrete event system. For execution of DEVS, we need an execution environment, which consists of simulation engine and models interpreted by the simulation engine. Common existing environments use hierarchical scheduling algorithm for DEVS execution. This hierarchical scheduling is a proper algorithm for DEVS execution because of hierarchical and modular characteristics. But this algorithm has overheads owing to message passing and time management. To overcome these overheads, we apply event-oriented simulation to DEVS execution and we remove hierarchical overheads. In eventoriented simulation, the scheduling of model execution is performed by events and event list. We propose three event-oriented execution environments for DEVS and experiment about the performance of our proposed environments in comparison with the existing execution environment using the hierarchical scheduling. The experimental results show our environments works better than existing environment using the hierarchical scheduling.

  • Modeling and Simulation, especially in mobile ad hoc network(MANET), are the most effective way to analyze performance or optimize system parameters without establishing real network environment. Focusing mainly on overall network behaviors in MANET concerns dynamics of network transport operations, which can efficiently be characterized with event based system states rather than execution details of protocols. We thus consider the network as a discrete event system to analyze dynamics of network transport performance. Zeigler's set-theoretic DEVS(Discrete Event Systems Specification) formalism can support specification of a discrete event system in hierarchical, modular manner. The DEVSim++ simulation environment can not only provide a rigorous modeling methodology based on the DEVS formalism but also support modelers to develop discrete event models using the hierarchical composition methodology in object-orientation. This environment however hardly supports to specify connection paths of network nodes, which are continuously altered due to mobility of nodes. This paper proposes a DEVS-based modeling and simulation methodology of enabling node mobility, and develops DEVS models for the mobile ad hoc network. We also simulate developed models with the DEVSim++ engine to verify the proposal.

  • In this paper we describe Flexible Manufacturing Systems (FMS) using Petri nets, since Petri nets provide a powerful tool for modeling dynamical behavior of discrete concurrent processes. We deal with off-Line and on-Line rule-based scheduling of FMS. The role of the rule-base is to generate appropriate priority rule for resolving conflicts, that is, for selecting one of enabled transitions to be fired in a conflict set of the Petri nets. This corresponds to select a part type to be processed in the FMS. Towards developing more Intelligent Manufacturing Systems (IMS) we propose a conceptual framework of a futuristic intelligent scheduling system.
