Since the structure systems of construction projects have been forced to be large, high-rised, and complex, many researchers have been put their efforts to develop high strength concrete incorporating diverse advanced materials. In order to improve the performance of the concrete, the fibers leading high ductility to concrete have been used, consequently concrete columns adopting High-Performance Fiber Cement(HPFC) have been developed. This paper analyzed not only the construction work process of HPFC column installed to the real construction project, but also construction productivity of the columns by using discrete event simulation technique. As a result, several considerations on installing such a column have identified, compared with the works for typical concrete columns. In particular, there was specific characteristic to install the columns in terms of labor resource productivity, which is not shown with the work for the typical concrete columns.

Recently, various systems have been developed to support ship navigation safety. In order to verify the usefulness of such a system, it is most ideal to try it on a real vessel, but there are many difficulties. As an alternative, usability verification methods applied with modelling and simulation (M&S) techniques are required such as FMSS, which is closest to reality, is very expansive to construct, and there needs the specialized operator. For this reason, this paper proposes a method to verify the navigation safety support system by modeling and simulation techniques based on the Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) formalism. As a first step, we designed the navigation simulation architecture based on the SES/MB framework, and details on modelling ship core equipment and navigator agents based on the DEVS. Through this, we are able to implement the navigation simulation system for vessels, and evaluate the effectiveness of navigation safety support elements such as collision avoidance, etc. using developed scenarios.
A social phenomenon that occurs in a physical space is said to be a complex system. However, space syntax, which is commonly employed by researchers to identify such social phenomena, has various limitations in interpreting their complexity. On the other hand, agent-based modeling considers a variety of factors including the personality of the agent, objective-oriented work flows, estimation according to time flows and better prediction of space use through diverse parameters depending the situation, as well as the characteristics of the space. The agent-based method thus has the potentials to be developed as an alternative to space syntax techniques. In particular, discrete event driven simulation(DEVS), which is part of the agent-based modeling method, embraces the concept of networks just like space syntax, which allows a possible theoretical linkage in the future. This study suggests a procedural model of agent-based DEVS reflecting two different connection methods, i.e. connections between adjacent areas and those of the entire space, and attempts to identify the relationship between the local and regional indices of space syntax. A number of spaces were selected as examples-one for a preliminary experiment and eight modified for the main experiment-and space syntax and DEVS were applied to each of them. The comparative analysis of the results led to the conclusions as follows: 1) Adjacent connections were closely related to local indices, while the whole-space approach to regional indices. Local integration shows both characteristics. 2) Observation of the time flow model indicated a faster convergence with the range of 1 to 3-fold of the total time of one lap, with the error of less than 10%. 3) The heat map analysis showed more obvious characteristics of using the space for the entire space rather than adjacent connections. 4) Space syntax shows higher eligibility than ABM.

This paper presents the development of intelligent performance management of computer communication networks for larger-scale integrated systems and the demonstration of its efficacy using computer simula- tion. The innermost core of the performance management is based on fuzzy set theory. This fuzzy perfor- mance manager has learning ability by using principles of neuro-fuzzy model, neuralnetwork, genetic algo- rithm(GA). Two types of performance managers are described in this paper. One is the Neuro-Fuzzy Per- formance Manager(NFPM) of which learning ability is based on the conventional gradient method, and the other is GA-based Neuro-Fuzzy Performance Manager(GNFPM)with its learning ability based on a genetic algorithm. These performance managers have been evaluated via discrete event simulation of a computer network.
This paper suggested a whiteboard for multimedia collaboration work. We implemented the whiteboard so that the users participated in collaborative work may refer shared media objects as the same view to others. In this paper, we discuss a method for increasing reliability of media data through whiteboard. This paper explains a performance analysis of a media data system running on distributed multimedia environment using the rule-based DEVS modeling and simulation techniques.

Optimizing truck dispatching-intervals is imperative in ready mixed concrete (RMC) delivery process. Intervals shorter than optimal may induce queuing of idle trucks at a construction site, resulting in a long delivery cycle time. On the other hand, intervals longer than optimal can trigger work discontinuity due to a lack of available trucks where required. Therefore, the RMC delivery process should be systematically scheduled in order to minimize the occurrence of waiting trucks as well as guarantee work continuity. However, it is challenging to find optimal intervals, particularly in urban areas, due to variations in both traffic conditions and concrete placement rates at the site. Truck dispatching intervals are usually determined based on the concrete plant managers' intuitive judgments, without sufficient and reliable information regarding traffic and site conditions. Accordingly, the RMC delivery process often experiences inefficiency and/or work discontinuity. Automatic data collection (ADC) techniques (e.g., RFID or GPS) can be effective tools to assist plant managers in finding optimal dispatching intervals, thereby enhancing delivery performance. However, quantitative evidence of the extent of performance improvement has rarely been reported to data, and this is a central reason for a general reluctance within the industry to embrace these techniques, despite their potential benefits. To address this issue, this research reports on the development of a discrete event simulation model and its application to a large-scale building project in Abu Dhabi. The simulation results indicate that ADC techniques can reduce the truck idle time at site by 57% and also enhance the pouring continuity in the RMC delivery process.

Based on two dimensional model partition method proposed in Part 1, Part 2 provides detailed model specification and implementation. To mathematically delineate a model's behaviors and interactions among them, we extend the DEVS (Discrete Event Systems Specification) formalism and newly propose CE-DEVS (Combat Entity-DEVS) for an upper abstraction sub-model of a combat entity model. The proposed CE-DEVS additionally define two sets and one function to reflect essential semantics for the model's behaviors explicitly. These definitions enable us to understand and represent the model's behaviors easily since they eliminate differences of meaning between real-world expressions and model specifications. For model implementation, upper abstraction sub-models are implemented with DEVSim++, while the lower sub-models are realized using the C++ language. With the use of overall modeling techniques proposed in Part 1 and 2, we can conduct constructive simulation and assess factors about combat logics as well as battle field functions of the next-generation combat entity, minimizing additional modeling efforts. From the anti-torpedo warfare experiment, we can gain interesting experimental results regarding engagement situations employing developing weapons and their tactics. Finally, we expect that this work will serve an immediate application for various engagement warfare.
In applying modeling and simulation (M&S) techniques to analyze complex discrete event dynamic systems, conventionally users had to use different simulation environments depending on the user-level. To solve the inconvenience, this paper proposes an integrated development environment for M&S depending on user-level and a formalized interface to manage the model in the development environment efficiently. The interface consists of an extended DEVS formalism and model making rules. The development environment is divided into a modeling environment and a simulation environment. In the modeling environment, three modeling methods are provided for each level of the users. Users inputs several parameters to the model generated as a result of the modeling process, and experiments in various cases by using the simulation environment. The case study shows the implementation of the proposed M&S environment, and using the implemented environment, it shows the M&S process of the complex defense combat system.

Recently, many researches have been under way to develop systems (services) to support the safety navigation of ships, and in these studies, common difficulties have been encountered in assessing the usefulness and effectiveness of the developed system. To solve these problems, we propose the DEVS-based ship navigation modeling and simulation technique. Following the preceding study, we analyze the COLREG rules and reflected to officer and helmsman agent models for decision making. Also we propose estimation and interpolation techniques to adopt the motion characteristics of the actual vessel to simulation. In addition, we implement the navigation simulation system to reflect the designed proposed methods, and we present five-scenarios to verify the developed simulation system. And we conduct simulations according to each scenario and the results were reconstructed. The simulation results confirm that the components modelled in each scenario enable to operate according to the navigation relationships.
The requirement of distributed multimedia applications is the need for sophisticated QoS(quality of service) management. In terms of distributed multimedia systems, the most important catagories for quality of service are a timeless, volume, and reliability. In this paper, we discuss a method for increasing reliability through fault tolerance. We describe the desist and implementation of the ERA running on distributed multimedia environment ERA is a system is able to recover automatically a software error based on distributed multimedia. This paper explains a performance analysis of an error recovery system running on distributed multimedia environment using the rule-based DEVS modeling and simulation techniques. In DEVS, a system has a time base, inputs, states, outputs, and functions.
