This paper describes a methodology for the development of models of discrete event system. The methodology is based on transformation of continuous state space into discrete one to homomorphically represent dynamics of continuous processes in discrete events. This paper proposes a formal structure which can coupled discrete event system models within a framework. The structure employs the discrete event specification formalism for the discrete event system models. The proposed formal structure has been applied to develop a discrete event specification model for the complex spectral density analysis of strip for urin analyzer system. For this, spectral density data of strip is partitioned into a set of Phases based on events identified through urine spectrophotometry. For each phase, a continuous system of the continuous model for the urine spectral density analysis has been simulated by programmed C++. To validate this model, first develop the discrets event specification model, then simulate the model in the DEVSIM++ environment. It has the similar simulation results for the data obtained from the continuous system simulation. The comparison shows that the discrete event specification model represents dynamics of the urine spectral density at each phase.

A simulation for the analysis of the evasive capability of a conventional costal submarine against a light Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) torpedo has been studied. The Torpedo, Submarine Controller, Devoy, and Jammer models of this simulation are analysised and designed using Unified Modeling Language (UML) and in addition they are modeled Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS). We examine maximum speed, acceleration, countermeasure systems capabilities of a submarine, and sonar range of a torpedo as the factors which affect the evasive capability of the submarine. This paper shows the relationships between those various factors and the submarine's evasive capability as the outcome of the simulation. The simulation models can be applied for simulation based acquisition (SBA) of a submarine system.
Avionics System Integration Laboratory is the integrated test environment for integration and verification of avionics systems. When real equipment can not be used in the laboratory for various reasons, software models should be needed. Because there hasn't been any standardized method for the models so that it is difficult to reuse the developed models, the need for a framework to develop the avionics software models was emerged. We adopted DEVS(discrete event system specification) formalism as the standardized modeling method for the avionics software models. Due to DEVS formalism is based on event-driven algorithm, it doesn't accord a legacy system which has sequential and periodic algorithms. In this paper, we propose real-time event-driven modeling and simulation method for SIL to overcome these restrictions and to maximize reusability of avionics models through the analysis of the characteristics and the limitations of avionics models.
Presented in this paper is a modeling and simulation methodology for 3 dimensional man-made systems. Based on DEVS(discrete event system specification) formalism[13], we propose GK-DEVS (geometrical and kinematic DEVS) formalism to describe the geometrical and kinematic structure and continuous state dynamics. To represent geometry and kinematics, we add a hierarchical structure to the conventional atomic model. In addition, we employ the "empty event" and its external event function for continuous state changing. In terms of abstract simulation algorithm[13], the simulation method of GK-DEVS, named GK-Simulator, is proposed for combined discrete-continuous simulation. Using GK-DEVS, the simulation of an FMS(flexible manufacturing system) consisting of a luring machine, a 3-axis machine and a RGV-mounted robot has been peformed.en peformed.

Weapon systems composed of several subsystems execute various engagement missions in distributed combat environments in cooperation with a large number of subordinate/adjacent weapon systems as well as higher echelons through tactical data links. Such distributed weapon systems require distributed real-time simulation test beds to integrate and test their operational software, analyze their performance and effects of cooperated engagement, and validate their requirement specifications. These demands present significant challenges in terms of real-time constraints, time synchronization, complexity and development cost of an engagement simulation test bed, thus necessitate the use of high-performance distributed real-time simulation architectures, and modeling and simulation techniques. In this paper, in order to meet these demands, we presented a distributed real-time simulation system based on High Level Architecture(HLA) and Discrete Event System Specification(DEVS). We validated its performance by using it as a test bed for developing the Engagement Control System(ECS) of a surface-to-air missile system. The proposed technique can be employed to design a prototype or model of engagement-level distributed real-time simulation systems.

Modeling and simulation is a technique used for operational verification, performance analysis, operational optimization, and prediction of target systems. Discrete Event System Specification (DEVS) of this representative technology defines models with a strict formalism and stratifies the structures between the models. When the atomic DEVS models operate with an intention different the target system, the simulation may lead to erroneous decision-making. However, most DEVS systems have the exclusion of the model test or provision of the manual test, so developers spend a lot of time verifying the atomic models. In this paper, we propose a script-based automated test system for accurate and fast validation of atomic models in Python-based DEVS. The proposed system uses both the existing method of manual testing and the new method of the script-based testing. As Experimental results in our system, the script-based test method was executed within 24 millisecond when the script was executed 10 times consecutively. Thus, the proposed system guarantees a fast verification time of the atomic models in our script-based test and improves the reusability of the test script.

In this paper, we propose a heterogenous mission allocation technique for multi-UAV system based on discrete event modeling. We model a series of heterogenous mission creation, mission allocation, UAV departure, mission completion, and UAV maintenance and repair process as a mathematical discrete event model. Based on the proposed model, we then optimize the number of UAVs required to operate in a given scenario. To validate the optimized number of UAVs, the simulations are executed repeatedly, and their results are analyzed. The proposed mission allocation technique can be used to efficiently utilize limited UAV resources, and allow the human operator to establish an optimal mission plan.
The technology of Software Defined Radio (SDR) is a possible solution to interwork flexibly between various wireless transport protocols. Ubiquitous network, like u-health service network, includes sensor devices or nodes which do not facilitate all the same transport protocols to access network. As such this may be in such unreachable situations as poverty of all required AP (Access Point)’s, faults or contention in a path of particular protocol communication, etc. This paper presents research results of modeling and simulation to analyze transport performance of multi-protocol ubiquitous network which includes SDR-based interwork nodes and congestion-controlled AP’s. Focusing mainly on dynamics of overall transport performance rather than protocol execution procedures, this paper employs the Zeigler’s DEVS (Discrete Event Systems Specification) methodology and DEVSim++simulation environment to experiment.

To perform the engagement level simulation between the underwater vehicle model and the surface model those are constituted with various systems/ sub-systems, we implemented four different federates as a federation according to the IEEE 1516 HLA (High Level Architecture) protocol that is the international standard in the distributed simulation. Those are CFCS (Command and Fire Control System) federate, motion federate, external entities (torpedos, countermeasure and surfaceship) federate, and visualization federate that interacts with OSG (Open Scene Graph)-based visualization rendering module. In this paper, we present the detailed method about the model constitution for discrete event simulation in the distributed environment. For the sake of this purpose, we introduce the DEVS (Discrete Event System Specification)-HLA-based modeling method of the CFCS federate that reflects not only the interations between models, but also commands from user and tactics manager that is separated from the model. The CFCS federate makes decisions in various missions such as the normal diving, the barrier misision, the target motion analysis, the torpedo launch, and the torpedo evasion. In the perspective of DEVS modeling, the CFCS federate is the coupled model that has the tactical data process model, command model and fire control model as an atomic model. The message passing and time synchronization with other three federates are settled by the $m\ddot{a}k$ RTI (Runtime Infrastructure) that supports IEEE 1516. In this paper, we provides the detailed modeling method of the complicated model that has hierarchical relationship such as the CFCS system in the submarine and that satisfies both of DEVS modeling method for the discrete event simulation and HLA modeling method for the distributed simulation.
The problem of social phenomenon is getting more complicated than past decades, and the simulation engineers need more computation power to solve the problem. Therefore, the needs of the computational resources of the modeling and simulation environment are increasing. In the perspective of the simulation, it is necessary to allocate computational resources flexibly so that the simulation can be performed per the available budget range. As an alternative to the simulation environment to accommodate these requirements, cloud service has emerged as an environment in which computing resources can be used flexibly. This paper proposes a web-based simulation framework which consists of a front-end that reconstructs the simulation model using the web, and a back-end that executes the discrete event simulation. This paper also carried out a case study which shows web-based simulation framework has better overall runtime than standalone simulation framework.
