  • The structural behavior of reinforced concrete frame infilled with a masonry wall is investigated by the method of discontinuous deformation analysis (DDA). An interface element is developed and it is incorporated into DDA to analyze the continuous and discontinuous behavior of the masonry structure. The numerical results are compared with previous research and possess satisfactory agreement. Then the structural behavior and stress distribution of a reinforced concrete frame infilled with a masonry wall subjected to a horizontal force are studied. In addition, the justification of equivalent strut is assessed by the distribution of principal stresses. The results show that the behavior of the masonry structure is highly influenced by the failure of mortar. On the basis of the distribution of principal stress of the masonry wall in the reinforced concrete frame, the equivalent strut can be approximately substituted for the masonry wall without separation and opening. However, the application of equivalent strut to the masonry wall with separation and opening needs further study.

  • Large scale model tests and numerical analyses are performed to investigate the stress distribution of pillar due to surface loading nearby two-arch tunnel which is constructed in the regularly jointed rocks. It is observed that the influence of discontinuities on the stress distribution in the discontinuous rock mass and the underground stresses induced by surface loading are greater than those of linear elastic theory. Especially, lines of equal stresses are developed to the direction of inclination according to the inclined grade. In cases of discontinuities imbedded in parallel with or vertical to the ground, the pressure bulbs are formed symmetrically, however, the inclined ones result in stress distribution in parallel with and vertical to the planes of discontinuities. Results indicated that stress distribution is seriously affected by the angle of discontinuity. When stresses propagating to the pillar need to be estimated, relative location of surface loading, grade of discontinuous plane, and location of two-arch tunnel should be carefully considered.

  • Novel unified criterion to optimize power coupling at optical directional couplers with discontinuous input/output interfaces is first defined and evaluated numerically. The numerical results reveal that maximum power transfer between guiding slabs without discontinuous interfaces is dominated by conventional phase-matching condition while the guiding structures with discontinuous interfaces has maximum power transfer at an equi-partition condition, which describes the power distribution condition between two rigorous modes propagating through optical couplers.

  • Large scale model tests and numerical analyses were performed in order to investigate the stress distribution on the base of pillar during two-arch tunnel excavation in the regularly jointed rocks. It was observed that the stress was irregularly distributed on pillar and the angle of discontinuities seriously influenced on the stress distribution on the pillar base in the discontinuous rock mass. In the numerical analyses results, It was shown that the stress level of pillar was greatly changed depending on the excavation sequences of two-arch tunnel. It was also observed that stress distributed eccentrically at the pillar as well as at the base of pillar. It is necessary to consider this point for the design of two-arch tunnel.

  • Accuracy of a numerical model with the Hwang's scheme of directly analyzing discontinuous topography could be enhanced by introducing a flux correction coefficient that accounted for the deviation of actual pressure from hydrostatic distribution acting on the front of discontinuous topography. The optimal coefficient was determined from 218 experimental runs for square-edged broad-crested weir and simulation with it showed good agreement with another two square-edged broad-crested weir experiments and an unsteady side-weir experiment. This enabled accurate numerical simulation of shallow-water flow over the discontinuous river structure, such as square-edged broad-crested weir, without alleviating discontinuous topography with refined meshes or imposing internal boundary conditions.

  • In this study, a stochastic finite element model is proposed with a view to consider the uncertainty of physical properties of discontinuous rock mass in the analysis of structural behavior on underground caverns. In so doing, the LHS(Latin Hypercube sampling) technique has been applied to make up weak points of the Crude Monte Carlo technique. Concerning the effect of discontinuities, a joint finite element model is used that is known to be superior in explaining faults, cleavage, things of that nature. To reflect the uncertainty of material properties, the variables such as the the elastic modulus, the poisson's ratio, the joint shear stiffness, and the joint normal stiffness have been used, all of which can be applicable through normal distribution, log-normal distribution, and rectangulary uniform distribution. The validity of the newly developed computer program has been confirmed in terms of verification examples. And, the applicability of the program has been tested in terms of the analysis of the circular cavern in discontinuous rock mass.

  • The modular multilevel converter (MMC) is generally considered to be a promising topology for medium-voltage and high-voltage applications. However, in order to apply it to high-power applications, a huge number of switching devices is essential. The numerous switching devices lead to considerable switching losses, high cost and a larger heat sink for each of the switching device. In order to reduce the switching losses of a MMC, this paper analyzes the performance of the conventional discontinuous pulse-width modulation (DPWM) method and its efficiency. In addition, it proposes a modified novel DPWM method for advanced switching losses reduction. The novel DPWM scheme includes an additional rotation method for voltage-balancing and power distribution among sub modules (SMs). Simulation and experimental results verify the effectiveness and performance of the proposed modulation method in terms of its switching losses reduction capability.

  • A discontinuous Percoll gradient was used to separate islets from the collagenase-treated mouse pancreas easily and rapidly. Since the osmolality of Percoll is very low, adjustment of its osmolality to 340 mOs/kg $H_2$O was essential for securing the optimal separation. A discontinuous gradient layering with Percoll solution of 1.09 g, 1.07g, and1.05g/m, respectively, when centrifuged at 800$\times$g for 10 min, resulted in an optimal condition for separation and yielded a banding pattern with an even distribution of islet cells. No significant difference was observed in the morphological features between the Percoll-isolated and the manually-isolated islets. In conclusion, the discontinuous Percoll gradient can be effectively used to isolate the pancreatic islets from mice with four-fold higher efficiency compared to the handpicking method.

  • This study Presents improvement of Precision in the non-contacted laser application measuring techniques. The phase map of deformation obtained by phase shifting method in Electronic Speckle Pattern Interferometry displays the wrapped image by the arctangent function, which is a characteristic of 4-step phase shifting method. To obtain deformation distribution from the results, the wrapped phase map is processed by an unwrapping method. But a previous method cannot apply discontinuous object as like plate with a circular hole to obtain precious deformation distribution To solve this problem, new algorithm is developed and the result is compared with previous method.

  • An echo signal in the active sonar using a high frequency is mainly formed of a specular reflection from the surface of an object along with several equivalent scatter inside, which are characterized by the spatial distribution of the highlights on the object. This thesis proposed a model in which the synthesized echo signal can be expressed as a distributed simulated target. The proposed model is obtained after composing a signal based on the movement of highlights relative to the aspect angle from the discontinuous point of an external hull with a strong reflection from a spheroid underwater target. Because the proposed algorithm includes a synthesis of the signals related to the highlight spacial distribution, it can be applied to all kinds of systems used at a short range, and similar results were obtained to the actual measured results of all reflected signals in previous literature referring to the irregular factor application of an envelope.
