  • Numerical stability is studied based on numerics and mathematics. It is frequently observed in the region where velocity is zero. In that region, the Euler equation have numerous solutions and, thus, it is impossible to determine a unique solution with only governing equations. However, a unique solution can be determined by additional outer flow conditions or outer numerical discontinuity calculation since the information or a unique solution under undisturbed conditions is lost by disturbances. In this reason, the numerical scheme comsistent with Euler equations cannot remove shock instability completely.

  • This paper present a method which resolves an optical discontinuity in bezel of digital signage using light guide film. On a polycarbonate film, a light guide film is bonded to produce refraction, reflection, diffraction of light. Arc shaped light guide film is assembled on the top LED light sources (red and green) to see light propagation through the film. When the two light sources (red and green) are mechanically attached at the end of the film, optical convergence brings new colors which have light wavelength between red and green. This result indicates that the light waveguide method could solve the light discontinuity on bezel of the digital signage system.

  • The final goal of the seismic method is to verify the spatial characteristic of subsurface media. For this purpose, professional interpreters interprete the discontinuities of seismic events from seismic image. This paper introduces a method for automatic discontinuity extraction from 3D seismic image. The method consists of three steps. The first step is for estimating coherency of seismic events from seismic data. The second step is to express the potential region where discontinuities may exist in the form of binary image. The third step is to locate the discontinuities by thining the region found in the second step.

  • Orientation data of discontinuities are of paramount importance for rock slope stability studies because they control the possibility of unstable conditions or excessive deformation. Most orientation data are collected by using linear sampling techniques, such as borehole fracture mapping and the detailed scanline method (outcrop mapping). However, these data, acquired by the above linear sampling techniques, are subjected to bias, owing to the orientation of the sampling line. Even though a weighting factor is applied to orientation data in order to reduce this bias, the bias will not be significantly reduced when certain sampling orientations are involved. That is, if the linear sampling orientation nearly parallels the discontinuity orientation, most discontinuities orientation data which are parallel to sampling line will be excluded from the survey result. This phenomenon can cause serious misinterpretation of discontinuity orientation data because critical information is omitted. In the case study, orientation data collected by using the borehole fracture mapping method (vertical scanline) were compared to those based on orientation data from the detailed scanline method (horizontal scanline). Differences in results for the two procedures revealed a concern that a representative orientation of discontinuities was not accomplished. Equal-area, polar stereo nets were used to determine the distribution of dip angles and to compare the data distribution fur the borehole method versus those for the scanline method.

  • Since most of companies these days are utilizing the Information system actively, Information System is the most important factor which should be recovered in terms of Business Continuity. However, a lot of enterprises have been outsourcing their Disaster Recovery Center. Therefore, it is highly possible that the information system can not work well and result in the discontinuity of business when any trouble arises because of seperated plan of Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery. The study draws critical success factors for successful disaster recovery through researches of 42 documents. Then, factors are reviewed through interviews with consultants, experts of Business Continuity Plan and the information system officers of domestic banks. Domestic companies can make use of the study when they develop or renew Disaster Recovery Plan or Information System in terms of Business continuity.

  • We prove that TCP Vegas globally converges to its equilibrium point in finite time assuming no feedback information delay. We analyze a continuous-time TCP Vegas model with discontinuity and high nonlinearity. Using the upper right-hand derivative and applying the comparison lemma, we cope with the discontinuous signum function in the TCP Vegas model; using a change of state variables, we deal with the high nonlinearity. Although we ignore feedback information delay in analyzing the model of TCP Vegas, the simulation results illustrate that TCP Vegas in the presence of feedback information delay shows very similar dynamic trends to TCP Vegas without feedback information delay. Consequently, dynamic properties of TCP Vegas without feedback information delay can be used to estimate those of TCP Vegas in the presence of feedback information delay.

  • Bandstop characteristics of dielectric waveguide gratings are investigated using the modal approach. First, single step discontinuity of the dielectric waveguide is analyzed in terms of the mode matching method. Then by cascading those discontinuities characteristics of dielectric waveguide gratings are derived. Experimental results at X-band show good agreement with theoretical ones.

  • This paper derives the two-dimensional probability distribution and density functions of morphological dilation and erosion of a one-dimensional memoryless source and reports numerical results for a uniform source, thus providing methodology for joint distributions for other morphological operations. The joint density functions expressed in closed forms contain the Dirac delta functions due to the joint discontinuity within the dilation and erosion. They also exhibit symmetry between these two morphological density functions of dilated and/or eroded sources, in the computation of other higher moments thereof, and in multidimensional quantization.

  • In transmitting a compressed video bit-stream over Internet, a packet loss causes an error propagation in both spatial and temporal domain, which in turn leads to a severe degradation in image quality. In this paper, a new error concealment algorithm is proposed to repair damaged portions of the video frames in the receiver. Conventional BMA(Boundary Matching Algorithm) assumes that the pixels on the boundary of the missing block and its neighboring blocks are very similar, but has no consideration of edges t)r discontinuity across the boundary. In our approach, the edges are detected across the boundary of the lost or erroneous block. Once the edges are detected and the orientation of each edge is found, only the pixel difference along the expected edges across the boundary is measured instead of calculating differences between all adjacent pixels on the boundary. Therefore, the proposed approach needs very few computations and the experiment shows an improvement of the performance over the conventional BMA in terms of both subjective and objective quality of video sequences.
