  • As materials cure, the internal electrical flow changes, leading to variations in the dielectric constant over time. This study aims to assess the impact of voltage values extracted from time domain reflectometry (TDR) waveforms, measured during the curing of materials, on predicting the dielectric constant. The experiments are conducted over a curing period ranging from 60 to 8640 minutes, with 30 TDR trials. From the measured waveforms, values of V0, V1, V2, Vf, and Δt are deduced. Additionally, curing time is included as an input variable. Groups A and B are distinguished based on the presence or absence of Δt, indicating a physical relationship between Δt and the dielectric constant. The dielectric constant is set as the output variable. The SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) algorithm is applied to the compiled data. The results indicate that Δt and V1 are the most influential input variables in both Group-A and Group-B. The study also presents the distribution of SHAP values and interacts SHAP values to infer the interrelationships among the input variables. To validate the reliability of these findings, the partial dependence (PD) algorithm is applied to estimate the marginal effects of each input variable, with outcomes closely aligning with those of the SHAP algorithm. This research suggests that understanding the contributions and proportional relationships of each input variable can aid in interpreting the relationships among various material properties.

  • We performed the experimental study on the control of suspended dust in a cement packaging process for various ventilation systems. To effectively remove the dust generated in the cement packaging process, three different kinds of ventilation system, such as local exhaust ventilation, electrostatic scrubber, and local air supply system, were adopted. Dust concentrations in the packaging process were measured with the variation of the airflow rate of the ventilation systems and then their ventilation performance were evaluated. From the results, we knew that the ventilation performance was the best when the local exhaust ventilation and the electrostatic scrubber were simultaneously operated in the packaging process. In the electrostatic scrubber system, the effect of the airflow rate on the indoor dust removal efficiency was negligible so hat he system ust be operated at $2,700m^3/h$ for saving power consumption.

  • With the rapid development of modern society, subway has become one of the most typical urban transport systems. Since fire accident occurred at Daegu subway in 2003, importance of life safety and disaster prevention have been widely recognized and many studies have been carried out. As a result of these studies, fire-retardant and non-combustible interior material and platform screen door with passenger guide indication device have been developed, but studies on a subway evacuation criteria have been in a stalemate. Therefore, this study is intended to improve the subway evacuation standard. It is very difficult to take into account whole subway system, so a typological approach to a ticket was carried out referring to previous studies focused on a subway platform. this paper selected the most common subway platforms and estimated evacuation time among 10 platforms from previous studies and 8 from this study. As a result, evacuation time exceeded 6 minutes which is the guideline of existing standard. Therefore, it is necessary to update the standard for evacuation time and add supplementary conditions which can help establishing the measures for safety facilities and prevention measures.

  • Although safety and health education is reported to be very effective in reducing the industrial accident rate, the demand for improvement in safety and health education is also very high. The purpose of this study is to present measures to enhance effectiveness by investigating the effectiveness and demand for safety and health education for supervisors among the safety and health education systems. As a result of the study, it was found that the satisfaction and effectiveness of safety and health education were low. As the most important competency required for supervisors, it was investigated that job competency was the ability to discover harmful risk factors and formulate disaster prevention measures in the work process and work environment, and base competency was communication ability. In addition to designated safety and health education institutions, there was a high demand for recognition as education completion time even when professional education by job was completed by other professional education institutions. Therefore, in safety and health education for supervisors, it is necessary to focus on major items to improve supervisors' job competency and base competency, and to recognize that they have completed education at a wide range of educational institutions. We believe that it can increase the supervisor's capacity for safety management and improve the effectiveness of safety and health education.

  • As forest fires continue to increase in scale worldwide, the importance of forest roads in relation to forest fire prevention and suppression has become increasingly evident. To ensure effective functioning during a forest fire disaster, it is crucial to apply appropriate road planning and ensure roads' structural integrity. However, previous studies have predominantly focused on the impact of forest fires on firebreak efficacy and road placement, meaning that insufficient attention has been paid to ensuring the safety of these facilities. Therefore, this study sought to compare the strength of concrete facilities within areas damaged by forest fires over the past three years by using the rebound hammer test to identify signs of thermal degradation. The results revealed that concrete facilities damaged by forest fires exhibited significantly lower strength (15.6 MPa) when compared with undamaged facilities (18.0 MPa) (p<0.001), and this trend was consistent across all the target facilities. Consequently, it is recommended that safety assessment criteria for concrete forest road facilities be established to prevent secondary disasters following forest fire damage. Moreover, continuous monitoring and research involving indoor experiments are imperative in terms of enhancing the stability of forest road structures. It is expected that such research will lead to the development of more effective strategies for forest fire prevention and suppression.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to analyze the current state of drone terrorism response at such critical national facilities and derive improvements, especially to identify problems in laws and systems to effectively utilize the anti-drone system and present directions for improvement. Method: A qualitative research method was used for this study by analyzing a variety of issues not discussed in existing research papers and policy documents through in-depth interviews with subject matter experts. In-depth interviews were conducted based on 12 semi-structured interviews by selecting 16 experts in the field of anti-drone and terrorism in Korea. The interview contents were recorded with the prior consent of the study participants, transcribed back to the Korean file, and problems and improvement measures were derived through coding. For this, the threats and types were analyzed based on the cases of drone terrorism occurring abroad and measures to establish anti-drone system were researched from the perspective of laws and systems by evaluating the possibility of drone terrorism in the Republic of Korea. Result: As a result of the study, improvements to some of the problems that need to be preceded in order to effectively respond to drone terrorism at critical national facilities in the Republic of Korea, have been identified. First, terminologies related to critical national facilities and drone terrorism should be clearly defined and reflected in the Integrated Defense Act and the Terrorism Prevention Act. Second, the current concept of protection of critical national facilities should evolve from the current ground-oriented protection to a three-dimensional protection concept that considers air threats and the Integrated Defense Act should reflect a plan to effectively install the anti-drone system that can materialize the concept. Third, a special law against flying over critical national facilities should be enacted. To this end, legislation should be enacted to expand designated facilities subject to flight restrictions while minimizing the range of no fly zone, but the law should be revised so that the two wings of "drone industry development" and "protection of critical national facilities" can develop in a balanced manner. Fourth, illegal flight response system and related systems should be improved and reestablished. For example, it is necessary to prepare a unified manual for general matters, but thorough preparation should be made by customizing it according to the characteristics of each facility, expanding professional manpower, and enhancing response training. Conclusion: The focus of this study is to present directions for policy and technology development to establish an anti-drone system that can effectively respond to drone terrorism and illegal drones at critical national facilities going forward.

  • Due to the Four Major Rivers Restoration Project, Nakdong River Estuary Barrage's designed flood quantity has been largely increased, and this has caused to construct several drainage gates at the right side of Eulsukdo island to secure the safety of downstream river area. For successful functioning of Nakdong River Estuary Barrage, such as flood control, disaster prevention, and the securing of sufficient water capacity, drainage gates at the both sides of island have to operate systematically and reliably. To manage this under restricted personnel and resources, we have implemented the IOS (Integrated Operation System) by integrating previous facilities and resources via information and communication technologies. The IOS has been designed to have higher availability and fault tolerance to function continuously even with the partial system's failure under the emergency situation like flood. Operators can use the system easily and acknowledge alarms of facilities through its IWS (Integrated Warning System) earlier. Preparing for Integrated Water Resources Management and Smart Water Grid, the architecture of IOS conformed to open system standards which will be helpful to link with the other systems easily.

  • Recently, the number of underground road development projects has been increasing to solve traffic problems in the national capital region and metropolitan areas with intensified overcrowding, and there has been a tendency to plan underground roads by applying a double-deck tunnel technology that has advantages in constructability and economical efficiency. The double-deck tunnel has a structure where one excavation section is divided into two parts and used as up and down lines, and is mainly used as a road for small vehicles only due to its low floor height. In addition, due to the small cross-sectional area, it has characteristics different from those of general road tunnels in terms of ventilation and disaster prevention. In this regard, this study proposed an operational plan that applies an oversized exhaust system, which is one of semi-transverse ventilation systems, to small cross-sectional tunnels like double-deck tunnel with low floor height, and a comparative analysis between smoke exhaust characteristics according to the fire occurrence locations and oversized exhaust systems was conducted using the Fire Dynamics Simulator (FDS). The results showed that unlike uniform exhaust, intensive smoke exhaust using the oversized exhaust port maximized the delay effect of smoke diffusion and limited the smoke within 50 m above and below the fire point.

  • This study analyzed various possibilities of flash fire which could occur in a variety of combats, in order to predict that of flash fire of combat system armor using Autodyn program. The possibility was judged by the temperature distribution of fuels, which was caused by the impact of parts of fuel systems through an armor, in the event of getting shot by external ammunition. Diverse variables could affect the possibility of flash fire: external ammunition(Type A: penetration 570 mm, Type B: penetration 410 mm), fuels(Gasoline, Diesel, Kerosene), the thickness of an armor(100, 200, 300, 400, 500 mm), the gap of a fuel tank and an armor(45, 95, 145, 195, 245, 295 mm). As a result, when an armor was 20 mm think, the temperature of 3 fuels ranged like this: Gasoline 372~387 K, Diesel 442~408 K, Kerosene 384~395 K. Although they made a little difference among them, they all didn't reach their ignition points. When an armor was 200 mm think, each fuel reached the maximum temperature, not reaching its ignition points as well. The thicker an armor was, the lower the temperature got. When Type B ammunition was used, the temperature of fuels went up 19~59 K higher than Type A was used. In the case that the gap of fuel tank and an armor was 20 mm thick, the temperature distribution of Gasoline showed 389~450 K, the maximum temperature appeared in the gap of 145 mm, and the minimum temperature 295 mm. For Type B, the temperature distribution of fuels ranged 386~401 K, the maximum temperature appeared in the gap of 245 mm, and the minimum temperature 45 mm. There was no significant difference between two cases, and neither of them reached its ignition point. Accordingly, as the tested fuels of combat systems didn't reach their ignition points, it is thought that the possibility of flash point of an armor is low.

  • Harmony Search (HS) is a recently developed metaheuristic algorithm that is widely known to many researchers. However, due to the increasing complexity of optimization problems, the optimal solution cannot be efficiently found by HS. To overcome this problem, there have been many studies that have improved the performance of HS by modifying the parameter settings and incorporating other metaheuristic algorithms. In this study, Copycat HS (CcHS) is suggested, which improves the parameter setting method and the performance of searching for the optimal solution. To verify the performance of CcHS, the results were compared to those of HS variants with a set of well-known mathematical benchmark problems. The effectiveness of CcHS was proven by finding final solutions that are closer to the global optimum than other algorithms in all problems. To analyze the applicability of CcHS to engineering optimization problems, it was applied to a design problem for Water Distribution Systems (WDS), which is widely applied in previous research. As a result, CcHS proposed the minimum design cost, which was 21.91% cheaper than the cost suggested by simple HS.
