  • In this paper, we present the analysis of a novel monopole antenna with a reflector. The proposed monopole antenna is printed on a TRF-45 substrate, and the reflector, which is positioned near the base of the antenna, is printed on the FR-4 substrate. Positioning the reflector near the base of the antenna was found to suppress current radiation toward the back of the monopole antenna. Comparative analysis of the proposed monopole antenna and a conventional monopole antenna without a reflector revealed that the bandwidths of the antenna with and without a reflector were 2.65 GHz and 2.88 GHz, respectively. Additionally, the antenna without a reflector was observed to have a bi-directional radiation pattern in the E-plane, and an omni-directional radiation pattern in the H-plane. However, only the antenna with a reflector was found to suppress back radiation, and provide non-uniform directional radiation in the E-plane and H-plane.

  • This paper presents a novel design of a differential patch antenna for 60-GHz millimeter-wave applications. The design process of the back-to-back (BTB) patch antenna is based on the conventional single-patch antenna. The initial design of the BTB patch antenna (Type-I) has a patch size of 0.66 × 0.98 mm2 and a substrate size of 0.99 × 1.48 mm2. It has a gain of 1.83 dBi and an efficiency of 94.4% with an omni-directional radiation pattern. A 0.4 mm-thick high-resistivity silicon (HRS) is employed for the substrate of the BTB patch antenna. The proposed antenna is further analyzed to investigate the effect of substrate size and resistivity. As the substrate resistivity decreases, the gain and efficiency degrade due to the substrate loss. As the substrate (HRS) size decreases approaching the patch size, the resonant frequency increases with a higher gain and efficiency. The BTB patch antenna has optimal performances when the substrate size matches the patch size on the HRS substrate (Type-II). The antenna is redesigned to have a patch size of 0.81 × 1.18 mm2 on the HRS substrate in the same size. It has an efficiency of 94.9% and a gain of 1.97 dBi at the resonant frequency of 60 GHz with an omni-directional radiation pattern. Compared to the initial design of the BTB patch antenna (Type-I), the optimal BTB patch antenna (Type-II) has a slightly higher efficiency and gain with a considerable reduction in antenna area by 34.8%.

  • In this paper, a dual band electrical beam tilting array antenna with bi-directional directivity is designed. Radiating element operates at dual-resonance frequencies and is designed as planar dipole using PCB. In order to tilt the main beam, the phase delay line is designed by use of only the phase shifting line of a $50\Omega$ microstrip line for broadband. The designed antenna has tilting angle of $0^{\circ}$ to ${\pm}8^{\circ}$. For validation of the designed antenna specification, the array antenna is fabricated and the performances are measured. Comparison between theory and experiment shows good agreement.

  • In this paper, the optimum placement of airborne line-of-sight (LOS) datalink directional antenna to minimize the datalink loss within the operation range of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is analyzed by using the electromagnetic (EM) simulation. In quick banking of UAV, the datalink loss is occurred due to the electromagnetic distortion and transmission loss by the fuselage blockage. In general, the banking angle of UAV is limited to prevent the datalink loss. However, in this case, there is the problem that the mission performance ability is largely limited by the banking radius increase. To solve this problem, the optimum placement to mount the airborne LOS datalink 1-axis directional antenna on both the top and bottom surfaces of fuselage is analyzed by using EM simulation. The 1-axis antenna with large vertical beamwidth is used because the banking angle of UAV is dependent on the vertical beamwidth of antenna. Also, there is the benefit to reduce largely the weight because the 1-axis antenna can be mounted instead of the 2-axis one.

  • This paper presents a novel scheme that quickly searches for the optimal direction of multiple directional antennas, and locks on to it for high-speed millimeter wavelength transmissions, when communications to another antenna directional are disconnected. The proposed method utilizes a modified genetic algorithm, which selects a superior initial group through preprocessing in order to solve the local solution in genetic algorithm. TDD (Time Division Duplex) is utilized as the transfer method and data controller for the antenna. Once the initial communication is completed for the specific number of individuals, no longer antenna's data will be transmitted nil each station processes GA in order to produce the next generation. After reproduction, individuals of the next generation become the data, and communication between each station is made again. In order to verify the effectiveness of the proposed system, simulation results of 1:1, 1:2, 1:5 directional antennas and experiment results of 1:1 directionalantennas confirmed the efficiency of the proposed method. The 16bit split is 8bit, but it has similar performance as 16bit gene.

  • With respect to serviceability, antenna masts should be designed so that wind-induced motion will not cause unacceptable lack of transmission for broadcasting users and wireless communication. For such antenna masts with directional radio transmission the serviceability limit state is predominantly governed by the tolerable change of the broadcasting angle of the mounted antenna assembly and therefore by the tip distortion of the mast. In this paper it will be shown that refinements of the present state of design of antenna masts are possible by using the statistics of extremes applied to extreme wind situations and by consideration of the statistical and reliability requirements given by the operator such as frequency and return period of passing the serviceability limit.

  • Ad hoc wireless networks operate without any infrastructure where a node can be a source and a router at the same time. This indispensably requires high throughput and low delay performance throughout the wireless network coverage span, particularly under heavy traffic conditions. Recent research on using multiple antennas in beam-forming or multiplexing modes over a wireless channel has shown promising results in terms of high throughput and low delay. Directional antennas have shown to increase spatial reuse by allowing multiple transmitters and receivers to communicate using. directional beams as long as they do not significantly interfere with each other. However directional antenna performance asymptotically approaches the omni-directional performance in a high density ad hoc network. Simulation results in QualNet validate that average throughput and packet corruption ratio of directional antenna approach omni-directional performance. Moreover, we further highlight some important issues pertaining to the directional antenna performance in wireless networks.

  • Directional antennas have been used in Ad Hoc networks, significantly improving the spatial reuse of the networks. However, the extended transmission range causes collisions at the receivers of neighbors, which prevents full exploitation of the potential of the directional antenna. In this paper, we propose a new power control MAC protocol for a directional antenna. For this protocol, we propose a method to detect a set of interference nodes in the neighbors of a receiver. We then use a power control algorithm to calculate the minimum transmission power and send data. Simulation results demonstrate that this protocol increases the network performance and reduces energy consumption.

  • In this paper, we fabricated dual polarization microstrip array antenna to analyze the performance of polarization diversity of each antennas beamwidth and recommend suitable polarizations diversity antenna under indoor environments. The proposed antennas which have directional beam patterns are small, light and thin. Also they are $1\times4$ array and $4\times4$ array antenna with $70^{\circ}$, $20^{\circ}$ beamwidth, respectively. The center frequency is 1890 MHz, IMT-2000's frequency. We also measured the antennas characteristics of each beamwidth in various waveguide structured corridor and compared then with the case of space diversity using the dipole antenna. The measurement shows that the polarization diversity using directional dual polarization microstrip array antennas has more 1~7 dB diversity gain than the space diversity using the dipole antenna. Therefore, the proposed antennas are expected to be efficiently used for the design of optimal directional beam pattern antenna and diversity system for indoor environments.
