  • This paper presents a new algorithm of fingerprint image analysis and processing using directional filter bank(DFB). The directional components of ridge is very important in pre-processing steps of fingerprint image processing such as image enhancement by directional filtering followed by estimationg the directional image of ridge patterns. The DFB analyzes input image into directional subband images and synthesizes them to the perfectly reconstructed image. In this paper, a new fingerprint processing algorithm using the DFB is proposed. The algorithm decomposes the fingerprint image into directional subband images and performs directional map generation, foreground segmentation, singular points extraction and image enhancement based on local directional energy estimate.

  • This paper proposes an omni-directional image generation algorithm with parametric image compensation. The algorithm generates an omni-directional image by transforming each planar image to the spherical image on spherical coordinate. Parametric image compensation method is presented in order to compensate vignetting and illumination distortions caused by properties of a camera system and lighting condition. The proposed algorithm can generates realistic and seamless omni-directional video and synthesize any point of view from the stitched omni-directional image on the spherical image. Experimental results show that the proposed omni-directional system with vignetting and illumination compensation is approximately $1{\sim}4dB$ better than that which does not consider the said effects.

  • For efficient massive image retrieval, an image retrieval requires that several important objectives are satisfied, namely: automated extraction of features, efficient indexing and effective retrieval. In this work, we present a technique for extracting the 4-dimension directional feature. By directional detail, we imply strong directional activity in the horizontal, vertical and diagonal direction present in region of the image texture. This directional information also present smoothness of region. The 4-dimension feature is only indexed in the 4-D space so that complex high-dimensional indexing can be avoided.

  • In fingerprints, singular regions including core or delta points have different directional characteristics from non-singular regions. Generally, the ridges of singular regions change more abruptly than those of nonsingular areas, thus in order to effectively enhance fingerprint images regardless of region, local ridge curvature information needs to be used. In this paper, we present an improved Directional Filter Bank (DFB)-based fingerprint image enhancement method that effectively takes advantage of such ridge curvature information. The proposed method first decomposes a fingerprint image into 8 directional subbands using the DFB and then classifies the image into background, low curvature, and high curvature regions using the directional energy estimates calculated from the subbands. Thereafter, the weight values for directional subband processing are determined using classification information and directional energy estimates. Finally, the enhanced image is obtained by synthesizing the processed subbands. The experimental results show that the proposed approach is effective in enhancing both singular and non-singular regions.

  • This paper describes a new method of directional filter-based analysis for fingerprint enhancement. Fingerprint cages can be represented by direction field of regular structure of ridge patterns. The dominant directional component of ridge plays a very important role in pre-processing steps of fingerprint image analysis such as ridge's linking and noise removal for minutiae extraction. A directional filter bank analyzes input image into directional subband images and synthesizes them to the perfectly reconstructed image. In this paper, a new fingerprint enhancement algorithm based on a directional filter bank is proposed. The algorithm decomposes the fingerprint image into subband images in the analysis stage, accomplishes an enhance procedure by processing subband images in the enhance stage and synthesizes them to the enhanced image in the synthesis stage.

  • Since image data has large data amount, proper image compression is necessary to transmit and store the data efficiently. Image compression brings about bit rate reduction but results in some artifacts. This artifacts are blocking artifacts, mosquito noise, which are observed in DCT based compression image, and ringing artifacts, which is perceived around the edges in wavelet based compression image. In this paper, we propose directional postprocessing technique which improved the decoded image quality using the fact that human vision is sensible to ringing artifacts around the edges of image. First we detect the edge direction in each block. Next we perform directional postprocessing according to detected edge direction. Proposed method is that the edge direction is block. Next performed directional postprocessing according to detected edge direction. If the correlation coefficients are equivalent to each directions, postprocessing is not performed. So, time of the postproces ing brings about shorten.

  • This paper aims to examine the relationship between the directional characteristics and the quality for fingerprint image as preprocessing stage for adative image enchancement. In order to do that, we transformed the original images into directional images and set up the subimage size of 16, 32, 64 and the direction of 1, 2, 3, 4. Then we extracted the accumulated directional value as the measurement of quality for fingerprint images. By using the clustering algirthm, we performed an analytic experiemnt with the result. Finally, we could extract the optimal subimage size and directional characteristics of fingerprint image.

  • In this study, a new algorithm for canceling a MRI artifact due to the translational motion In the image plane is described. Unlike the conventional iterative phase retrieval algorithm, in which there is no guarantee for the convergence, a direct method for estimating the motion is presented. In previous approaches, the motions in the x(read out) direction and the y(phase encoding) direction were estimated simultaneously. However, the feature of x and y directional motions are different from each other. By analyzing their features, each x and y directional motion is canceled by the different algorithms in two steps. First, it is noticed that the x directional motion corresponds to a shift of the x directional spectrum of the MRI signal, and the non-zero area of the spectrum just corresponds to the projected area of the density function on the x axis. So the motion is estimated by tracing the edges between non-zero area and zero area of the spectrum, and the x directional motion is canceled by shifting the spectrum in an reverse direction. Next, the y directional motion is canceled by using a new constraint condition, with which the motion component and the true image component can be separated. This algorithm is shown to be effective by using a phantom image with simulated motion.

  • A simple multimodal fingerprint recognition method based on two types of feature vectors such as minutiae points and directional features is proposed, where Directional Filter Bank (DFB) is used to extract directional features. Experimental results show that the proposed method can effectively combine minutiae- and DFB-based methods and produce a better matching capability in the poor quality fingerprint image.

  • In this paper an improved morphological algorithm for directional defect detection is proposed, where the defect is parallel to the texture image. The algorithm is based on obtaining the background image while removing the defect by comparing every directional morphological result with max or min except that of defect. The defect can of defect and the background image. For a computer simulation, it is shown that the proposed method has better performance than the conventional algorithm.
