A histogram-based road border line extractor is proposed for an efficient road extraction from the high-resolution satellite imagery. The road border lines are extracted from an edge strength map based on the directional histogram difference between the road and the non-road region. The straight and the curved roads are extracted hierarchically from the edge strength map of the original image and the segmented road cluster images, and the road network is constructed based on the connectivity. Unlike the conventional approaches based on the spectral similarity, the proposed road extraction method is more robust to noise because it extracts roads based on the histogram, and is able to extract both the location and the width of roads. In addition, the proposed method can extract roads with various spectral characteristics by identifying the road clusters automatically. Experimental results on IKONOS multi-spectral satellite imagery with high spatial resolution show that the proposed method can extract the straight and the curved roads as well as the accurate road border lines.

In this paper, we present a histogram and moment-based vidoe scencd change detection technique using hierarchical Hidden Markov Models(HMMs). The proposed method extracts histograms from a low-frequency subband and moments of edge components from high-frequency subbands of wavelet transformed images. Then each HMM is trained by using histogram difference and directional moment difference, respectively, extracted from manually labeled video. The video segmentation process consists of two steps. A histogram-based HMM is first used to segment the input video sequence into three categories: shot, cut, gradual scene changes. In the second stage, a moment-based HMM is used to further segment the gradual changes into a fade and a dissolve. The experimental results show that the proposed technique is more effective in partitioning video frames than the previous threshold-based methods.

Since the velocity is dependent on the fiber orientation in anisotropic composites, the application of traditional acoustic emission (AE) source location techniques based on the constant velocity to composite structures has been practically impossible. The anisotropy makes the source location procedure complicated and deteriorates the accuracy of the location. In this study, we have divided the region of interest(ROI) into a set of finite elements, taken each element as a virtual source, and calculated the arrival time differences between sensors by using the velocities at every degree from 0 to 90. The calculated and the experimentally measured values of the arrival time difference aye then compared to minimize the location error. The results from two different materials, namely AA6061-T6 and CFRP(uni-directional; UD, $[0]_{32}4$) laminate confirmed the practical usefulness of the proposed method.
Wall absorption treatment effectively reduces reverberation, but requires a large area for a live room and each wall absorption affects speech intelligibility differently. In this study, we try to find the most effective wall for the absorption treatment using the beamforming array microphone in terms of speech intelligibility. The absorption importance factor is defined by using the collision number of reflected sounds on each wall. It allows estimating how much the speech signal will be enhanced by the absorption treatment. A cuboid room with a size of 107 m3 and a reverberation time of 1.1 s is selected for the simulation. When a Helmholtz-type absorption is treated on the wall with the most significant importance factor, the modified clarity for 500 and 1k Hz is improved by 5.1 dB and 4.8 dB respectively, and the speech transmission index is enhanced by 0.06. The difference in results between the proposed method and commercial simulation code is less than a Just-Noticeable Difference (JND). The absorption treatment on the wall with the most significant importance factor shows improvement greater than the wall with the largest area, and its difference is larger than a JND value.
Recently, one of the most actively applied image media in the most fields such as virtual reality (VR) is omni-directional or panorama image. This image is generated by stitching images obtained by various methods. In this process, it takes the most time to extract keypoints necessary for stitching. In this paper, we analyze the parameters involved in the extraction of SIFT keypoints with the aim of reducing the computation time for extracting the most widely used SIFT keypoints. The parameters considered in this paper are the initial standard deviation of the Gaussian kernel used for Gaussian filtering, the number of gaussian difference image sets for extracting local extrema, and the number of octaves. As the SIFT algorithm, the Lowe scheme, the originally proposed one, and the Hess scheme which is a convolution cascade scheme, are considered. First, the effect of each parameter value on the computation time is analyzed, and the effect of each parameter on the stitching performance is analyzed by performing actual stitching experiments. Finally, based on the results of the two analyses, we extract parameter value set that minimize computation time without degrading.

Background: In this article, it was analyzed how snow melting affects the assembly of lichen and moss communities in a small area of the coastal region of Barton Peninsula, which is in maritime Antarctic. In the small area, even though there is a huge gap of difference of the environment between the snow-filled area and snow-melt one, the latter did not have distinctive environmental gradients. Results: Depending on the snow melting time, coverage and species diversity of lichens and mosses tend to increase remarkably. For species with significant changes depending on the snow-covered period, there are Andreaea regularis, crustose lichens, Placopsis contortuplicata, Usnea aurantiaco-atra, and snow algae. In this area, the process of vegetation assembly process has shown the directional development in the order of snow algae${\rightarrow}$crustose, lichen sub-formation${\rightarrow}$fruticose lichen, moss cushion sub-formation (Andreaea sociation)${\rightarrow}$fruticose lichen, and moss cushion sub-formation (Usnea sociation), according to the order of snow melting. These directional development stages are shown in gradual change in small area with the snow melting phenomena. However, in the snow-free area, where water is sufficiently supplied, it is expected that moss carpet sub-formation (Sanionia sociation) will be developed. Vegetation development in the small area with the snow melting phenomena, depending on differences of resistance on snow kill and moisture settled by species in according to the time of snow melting, tolerance model to form community is followed. Conclusions: The research results explain the development of vegetation in the Antarctic tundra and its spatial distribution according to the period for growth of lichens and mosses in the summer time by differences of snow melting in the small area. In the future, if research for the community development process in a large scale will be done, it will be helpful to figure out temporal and spatial dynamic of vegetation in the Antarctic tundra where snow and glaciers melt rapidly due to climatic warming.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the graph interpretation ability and perception of high school students and preservice secondary teachers in Earth science. We developed two different instruments; one was a graph interpretation ability inventory that consists of 9 graph types with 18 items, and the other one is two questionnaires to explore the participants' perception about Earth science-related graph. The results of this study are as follows: High school students and preservice secondary teachers demonstrated their remarkable ability in interpreting a line graph, but showed their limited ability with the graph of overlapped and directional change, which means the graph interpretation ability was affected by a graph type; two groups participated in this study revealed a considerable difference in the graph interpretation ability depending on the grade level; preservice teachers were superior to high school students in discriminating two graphs, the representation method, which are different with the same topic; and many participants in both groups considered that the property of Earth science graph was considerably different from that of other science subjects, especially in directional change graph, scatter graph, contour map, and domain graph. The results suggest that the effective graph instruction strategies be developed in Earth science learning.

When images compressed with block-based compression techniques are transmitted over a noisy channel, unexpected block losses occur. In this paper, we present a post-processing-based block recovery scheme using Haar wavelet features. No consideration of the edge-direction, when recover the lost blocks, can cause block-blurring effects. The proposed directional recovery method in this paper is effective for the strong edge because exploit the varying neighboring blocks adaptively according to the edges and the directional information in the image. First, the adaptive selection of neighbor blocks is performed based on the energy of wavelet subbands (EWS) and difference of DC values (DDC). The lost blocks are recovered by the linear interpolation in the spatial domain using selected blocks. The method using only EWS performs well for horizontal and vertical edges, but not as well for diagonal edges. Conversely, only using DDC performs well diagonal edges with the exception of line- or roof-type edge profiles. Therefore, we combined EWS and DDC for better results. The proposed methods out performed the previous methods using fixed blocks.

Recently, the possibility of abnormal waves of which height is greater than design wave height have been increased due to the climate change, and therefore it has been urgent to secure the stability for harbor structures. As a countermeasure for improving the stability of conventional caisson breakwaters, a method has been proposed in which adjacent caissons are interlocked with each other to consecutively resist the abnormal wave forces. In order to reflect this research trend, the reduction effect of the maximum wave force resulted from introducing a long caisson has been presented in the revision to the design criteria for ports and fishing harbors and commentary. However, no method has been proposed to evaluate the stability of interlocking caisson breakwater. In this study, we consider the effect of the phase difference of the oblique incidence of the wave based on the linear wave theory and apply the Goda pressure formula for considering design wave pressure distribution in the vertical direction. Sliding stability assessment formula of an interlocking caisson breakwater is proposed for regular, irregular, and multi-directional irregular wave conditions.

In the previous study, both the wave characteristics at the tip of composite breakwater and on caisson were investigated by applying olaFlow numerical model of three-dimensional regular waves. In this paper, the same numerical model and layout/shape of composite breakwater as applied the previous study under the action of one directional irregular waves were used to analyze two and three-dimensional spatial change of wave force including the impulsive breaking wave pressure applied to trunk of breakwater, the effect of rear region, and the occurrence of diffracted waves at the tip of caisson located on the high crested rubble mound. In addition, the frequency spectrum, mean significant wave height, mean horizontal velocity, and mean turbulent kinetic energy through the numerical analysis were studied. In conclusion, the larger wave pressure occurs at the front wall of caisson around the still water level than the original design conditions when it generates the shock-crushing wave pressure in three-dimensional analysis condition. Which was not occurred by two-dimensional analysis. Furthermore, it was confirmed that the wave pressure distribution at the caisson changes along the length of breakwater when the same significant incident wave was applied to the caisson. Although there is difference in magnitude, but its variation shows the similar tendency with the case of previous study.
