  • In order to develop more stable seedling stand method in wet direct rice seeding culture, the effect of making the drainage ditches was studied in both methods of broadcast seeding on floody paddy surface and puddled-soil drill seeding. In a broadcast seeding on floody paddy surface, the ditching after seeding using a tractor or small ditch maker improved the seedling stand, and reduced the floating seedling and herbicide injury by accelerating the drainage. Suitable ditching time was at 2 days after seeding (DAS) for the tractor and at 3 DAS for the ditch maker. In the puddled-soil drill rice seeding culture, the ditching before seeding with a ditch maker at 3 days after draining effectively improved the seedling stand due to quick draining through well formed the seeding furrows. In the puddled-soil drill seeding, seedling stand number showed higher in both ditching plots synchronized with seeding compared with both only draining treatment at 1 DAS without ditching and the flooding plot condition for 6 DAS. And the suitable ditching depth was 6 cm, as considered the ditching status and drained status. These results suggest that the ditching in wet direct rice seeding is an resonable practice for improving the seedling stand through the accelerating drainage of field.

  • One of the most laborious work in rice farming is transplanting of rice seedling which has been required preparation of nursery bed and care of seedling during one month period. In this research, direct seeding in dry paddy(DS) and direct seeding in wet paddy(WS) were practiced to compare with traditional transplanting(TP) in Suwon. Growth stages in direct seeding were delayed as its planting time was about 21 days later than those of TP. Heading stage of direct seeding at Suwon was delayed about 9 days as compared to transplanting culture. Rice yield was not different between the seeding practises. Working-hour saving was about 17%(DS) and 28%(WS). Production cost of direct seeding was decreased 20%(DS) and 32%(WS), respectively. Amount of rice production per a unit working-hour in direct seeding could increase 14%(DS) and 39%(WS) compared to that of TP, respectively. Therefore, direct seeding could save significantly working hour and production cost without reducing rice yield. WS was more effective than DS in saving labor and production cost. Direct seeding was not efficient method in input of farming energy and agricultural chemicals.

  • Unstable seedling stand establishment of wet direct seeding culture of rice is one of the major elements preventing the extension of its culture area. In order to develop methods of seedling stand improvement in direct seeded rice on flooded surfaces, three field experiments were conducted on silty loam soil using a cultivar 'Donjinbyeo' for three years, mainly focusing on water management after seeding and seed soaking with plant growth regulators (PGRs). Under the condition of shallow flooding after seeding, seedling stand rate increased and floating seedling rate decreased in both early and normal season seeding compared to deep flooding. With earlier draining time after seeding, there was a tendency towards preferential growth of the seminal root, increase of seedling stand and decrease of the floating seedling rate. Therefore the highest seedling numbers per unit area and the lowest floating seedling numbers were found upon drainage at 1 day after seeding (DAS), while a contrary tendency was shown upon conventional drainage at 7 DAS. Seed soaking with PGRs such as Metalaxyl or mixing of Metalaxyl with gibberellic acid (GA$_3$) significantly increased the seedling stand. In addition the effects of PGR treatment on seedling stand and the early growth of plants were greater under flooded conditions than under drained conditions after seeding, although draining of water after seeding improved the seedling establishment rate more when compared with the PGR treatment. These results suggest that draining management after seeding or maintaining of shallow flooding for a week is the most effective method to improve the seedling stand rate in wet direct seeding.

  • One of most laborious work in rice farming is transplanting of rice seedling which has been required preparation of nursury bed and care of seedling during one month period. In this research, direct seeding in dry paddy(DS) was practiced to compare with traditional tansplanting(TP) in Suwon and Milyang. Growth stages in DS were delayed as its planting time was about 36 days later than TP. Heading stage of DS at Suwon was delayed about 15 days as compared to transplanting culture. Rice yield in DS was decreased 8.2%(Suwon) and 0.11%(Milyang), repectively. Working-hour saving in DS was about 34.0%(Suwon) and 54.0%(Milyang). Production cost of DS was decreased 19%(Suwon) and 29% (Milyang), repectively. Amount of rice production per a unit working-hour in DS could incresed 37%(Suwon) and 113%(Milyang) compared to that of TP, respectively. Therefore, DS was decreased little in rice yield, but it could save working hour and production cost, significantly. Warm region like Milyang had more advantage in DS than Suwon. But, DS needs varietal selection for better emergence in low temperature, and more research in weed control and water management.

  • This study was conducted to investigate suitable seeding rate under irrigation water-saving rice culture in ridge direct seeding on dry paddy during 1997~1998. Dongjinbyeo was seeded from 60 kg/ha to 120 kg/ha on silty loam condition. The number of irrigation from 3-leaf stage to complete drainage were 7.5 times and total amount of irrigation was 258.75 mm. The number of seedling stand rose with the increase of seeding rate, whereas the rate of seedling stand was decreased with the increase of it. Soil moisture tension was -2kPa at one day after stopped irrigation and lowered to -30kPa at five days after stopped irrigation. Leaf area index and shoot dry weight were increased with rising of seeding rate. Lodging index was increased with the rising of seeding rate, but lodging was not showed in field. Heading date, percent ripened grain and 1,000 grain weight had no difference with seeding rate, and number of spikelets per m$^2$ were highest at the rate of 100 kg/ha. Rice yield was increased by 9% at the seeding rate of 100 kg/ha and 4% at the rate of 80 kg/ha and 120 kg/ha compared with 60 kg/ha. Therefore, it was considered that appropriate seeding rate was 100 kg/ha under water-saving culture in ridge direct seeding on dry paddy.

  • This experiment was carried out to investigate the proper seeding methed for direct seeding culture of rice in puddled soil at ill-drained paddy field. Mangeumbyeo was seeded on May 11 with drill seeder attached to cultivater, dibbling seeder attached to transplanter and power dust blower. And to determine the proper flooding time after seeding, Mangeumbyeo was seeded on May 7 and June 1 with drill seeder. Emergence ratio wasn't significantly different between drill seeder seeding and dibbling seeder seeding but emergence was very low with power dust blower. Working hour for seeding was shortened in the order of power dust blower, drill seeder and dibbling seeder, and these seeding methods saved the working hour remarkably compared with machine transplanting of infant seedling by omitting the procedures of raising seedling and transplanting. Lodging occurred slightly in all seeding methods. However, yield wasn't significantly different between machine transplanting of infant seeding and direct seeding culture in puddled soil except power dust blower. When field was flooded on seeding date, the emergence period was shortened, emergence ratio was increased and weed occurrence was decreased. Yield was highest when flooding was done on seeding date as the number of panicle per m$^2$ and the number of spikelets per m$^2$ were higher than any other flooding time.

  • In rice-barley cropping systems, efficient utilization of barley straw is essential, both to improve the soil fertility and to conserve the environment. In order to identify the effects of barley straw mulch rates in rice cultivation, a rice cultivar, 'Gancheogbyeo', was directly seeded on a no-tillage field synchronized with barley harvesting with five barley straw mulch rates, i.e., 0, 2.5, 5.0, 7.5 and 10.0 ton h $a^{-1}$ and agronomic characters of rice and soil nitrogen were determined. The increasing of barley straw mulch rates. Dominant weed species, chestnut, occurred in large amounts in no mulching or lower mulch rates than in higher mulch rates. The content of N $H_4$$_{+}$-N in soil applied with high barley straw mulch rates was lower during the month after seeding, and then it was higher at heading date, compared with lower mulch rates or no mulch plot. As the barley straw rate increased, maximum tillering stage was delayed, and plant height was reduced. Although the lodging of rice plants was seldom observed in all plots, the breaking strength of the culm was significantly higher in the mulch rate of 10.0 ton h $a^{-1}$ . With an increase of barley straw mulch rate, the effective tillering rate and spikelet number $m^{-2}$ decreased while ripened grain ratio increased. The rice grain yield was slightly decreased with an increase of barley straw mulch rate, although significant differences were not found all barley straw mulch rates. These results suggest that there is no significant yield loss although the total barley straw production, approximately 5.0 ton h $a^{-l}$ in the present study, apply in the paddy for the following rice cultivation by no-tillage direct seeding.ect seeding.

  • This study was conducted to identify the optimum proper nitrogen (N) application rate for tillering in ridge direct seeding on dry paddy of rice culture. During 1998, a series of experiments was carried out at paddy field (Chonbuk series) of the National Honam Agricultural Experiment Station, RDA using Dongjinbyeo. Leaf area index and top dry weight increased with higher N levels, especially in the 100 kg/ha seeding rate compared with the 60 kg/ha seeding rate. N use efficiency increased at increased by 50~75% of the N topdressing rate at tillering. Heading date, ripened grain rate, and 1,000-grain weight of brown rice did not vary among the rate of topdressing for tillering and seeding rates. The highest grain number per unit area was at the level of increased by 75% in N topdressing at tillering stage. Milled rice yield increased 5% at the 60 kg/ha seeding rate and increased 16~17% at the 100 kg/ha seeding rate at increased by 50~75% of topdressing N compared with 48 kg/ha topdressed N of 60 kg/ha seeding rate.

  • 'Cheongdam' is a japonica rice variety developed from a cross between SR19200-HB826-34, a line of good germination ability and shoot emergence at low temperature and Juanbyeo, good quality and direct-seeding adaptable cultivar by the rice breeding team of National Institute of Crop Science, RDA in 2006. This variety has 153 days of total growth duration from seeding to maturity in direct-seeding, and 160 days of growth duration from seeding to maturity in transplanting. This is erect plant type with culm length of 74 cm, thick culm, and green leaves. It has large panicle shape with 126 and 140 spikelets per panicle in direct-seeding and transplanting, respectively. Milled rice is transluscent and medium in grain size of non-glutinous endosperm. This variety is susceptible to leaf and neck blast, bacterial blight, stripe virus disease and brown planthopper. The yield potential of 'Cheongdam' is 5.84 MT/ha at ordinary transplanting culture and 5.62 MT/ha and 5.89 MT/ha at wet direct-seeding and dry direct-seeding cultures, respectively in the local adaptability test for three years. 'Cheongdam' would be adaptable to middle and southern plain of Korea for direct-seeding culture and transplanting rice culture.

  • This experiment was conducted to elucidate the effect of the midsummer drainage times on lodging characters, field lodging and yield in direct seeding rice culture in puddled soil. Dongjinbyeo was seeded at May 11 by seeding machine with 4cm of furrow depth and drained, one(50days after seeding DAS)) two (30DAS and 50DAS), and three times (30DAS, and 50DAS and 60DAS). The results are as follows. Culm length was shorten and the wall of N3, N4 were thicken as the drain-age times were increased. As the drainage times were increased breaking weights were increased but the lodging index were decreased. Lodging was occurred seriousely at none drainage, but wasn't occurred two or three times drainage. Yield was higher at 1~2 times drainage compared with none and three times drainage. Therefore, two times midsummer drainage is recommend-able water management method for direct seeding rice culture in puddled soil.
